Yaguar is a brand of Brazilian yerba mate, which is a brew made from the leaves of the Paraguayan holly, in 500 g packages. Each Yaguar yerba mate has the same aged base, while the variants differ in the addition of fruits, herbs, and flavors.

Who is behind the Yaguar brand

Yaguar is the proprietary brand of Venusti, a wholesaler and distributor of yerba mate. The brew is produced in Brazil, and the manufacturer states that it comes from the tropical forests of the Paraná basin in South America. The name refers to the jaguar, which indigenous tribes of South America regarded as a symbol of strength.

How Yaguar yerba mate is made

This is elaborada yerba mate, which is a blend of leaves, sticks, and a small amount of dust, created in the spirit of the Argentine production school. The leaves are dried with hot air, so the brew does not have smoky notes. Then the brew ages for 18 months, and fruits, herbs, and flavors are added only after the second grinding.

The long aging smooths the flavor of the brew. The manufacturer describes the effect as harmonious, noble taste with a slight bitterness of yerba mate.

Yaguar compositions and their ingredients

All compositions have a net weight of 500 g and the same base brew. They differ in the proportion of yerba mate and additives:

  • Energia Guarana: 97.8% yerba mate, 1.25% guarana, and natural flavor,
  • Citrus Bomb: 89.6% yerba mate, orange, lemon, and lime peels, lemongrass, and marigold petals,
  • Mango Tango: 90.9% yerba mate, 2% mango, orange peel, lemongrass, and marigold petals,
  • Frutas Dulces: 91.2% yerba mate, 5% apple, candied papaya, and mint,
  • Frutas del Huerto: 88% yerba mate, 8.5% apple, lemongrass, and rose petals,
  • Frutas Bayas: 85.1% yerba mate, 9.7% strawberries, lemongrass, mint, and rose petals,
  • Amore: 86.3% yerba mate, 10% strawberries, katuaba, muira puama, ginkgo biloba, and rose petals.

Each composition includes flavors. Some flavor notes, such as peach, pear, or blackberry, come from flavors rather than dried fruits.

How to brew Yaguar

Pour about 15 g of the brew into a vessel, cover it with your hand, turn it upside down, and shake it a few times to get rid of the dust. Arrange the brew into a mound on one side and insert the bombilla where there is the least brew. Pour water at a temperature no higher than 80°C and keep adding it until the brew retains its flavor.

The fruity compositions are also suitable for tereré, which is cold yerba mate. In this case, use more brew, about 20-25 g, and pour it with ice-cold water. You can add ice cubes, a slice of lemon, or fresh mint.

Caffeine and what to pay attention to

Yerba mate naturally contains caffeine. In Energia Guarana, guarana is added, another plant source of caffeine, so this composition is for those who tolerate it well. Do not consume the brew with other products that are sources of caffeine. More about yerba mate and caffeine can be found in the text yerba mate: properties and caffeine.

Amore contains herbs: katuaba, muira puama, and ginkgo biloba. If you are taking medications regularly, ask your doctor about these additives before your first serving. Store an opened package tightly closed, in a dry and dark place. Other brews can be found in the Teas category.
