Facial care works when products are arranged in the right order, not when there are many of them. In this category, you will find preparations for each of the three basic stages: cleansing, concentrate, and closing care, mostly based on hemp seed oil.

How to arrange facial care?

The rule is simple: from the lightest consistency to the heaviest. Watery preparations are applied before oil-based ones, as the latter will not penetrate through the fat layer if applied in reverse order.

1. Cleansing. Foam or gel cleansers remove sebum and impurities from the surface. Micellar water is effective for quick makeup removal and for sensitive skin when you do not want to disturb the barrier with soap.

2. Exfoliation. Peeling is not used daily, but one to two times a week. More frequent exfoliation weakens the skin barrier and has the opposite effect to what is intended.

3. Serum. This is the most concentrated element of the routine, applied to cleansed skin in small amounts. A few drops are enough for the entire face, as the serum is meant to work with the ingredient, not the volume.

4. Cream or mask. The cream closes the care and limits water loss. The mask is treated as an additional treatment, usually applied once or twice a week, after cleansing and before serum or instead of it.

What you will find in the facial cosmetics category

The category collects serums in small volumes, masks, cleansing foams, peels, and micellar water. The largest part consists of products from the brands cannabellum and PALACIO, based on hemp seed oil and supplemented with typical care ingredients.

We have gathered face creams in a separate category creams, and body care products in the category body cosmetics. We write about what to expect from hemp cosmetics in the guide about hemp face creams.

Serum, cream, and mask. What distinguishes them

The serum has the smallest molecules and the highest concentration of active substances, but usually does not contain occlusive ingredients, so it does not retain water in the skin by itself. Therefore, it is used under the cream, not instead of it.

The cream combines the water and oil phases and creates a layer that limits evaporation. It is responsible for skin comfort after care and for maintaining the effect of the serum.

The mask is a treatment form with a short contact time, usually from ten to twenty minutes. Its advantage is the high concentration of ingredients at the time of application, not long-lasting action, so it does not replace the daily routine.

How to choose products for your skin type

Oily and combination skin tolerates light gels and water emulsions better, and enzymatic peeling can be gentler for it than a coarse scrub. For dry skin, oil-based preparations and cream masks work well, applied to slightly damp skin.

Sensitive skin reacts poorly to fragrance compositions, alcohol high on the ingredient list, and strong exfoliating substances. For it, the safest is a short list of ingredients and introducing one new product at a time, with at least two weeks apart.

Safety and contraindications

Use the cosmetic only externally. Before the first use, perform a patch test on a small area of skin and wait a day. Avoid the eye area unless the manufacturer explicitly indicates such use, and in case of contact with the eye, rinse it thoroughly with water.

Do not use on damaged skin or on changes requiring dermatological consultation. If you are using products prescribed by a doctor, consult them before introducing a new cosmetic to avoid overlapping substances with similar effects. Store products out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

In what order should facial cosmetics be applied?

From the lightest consistency to the heaviest. First, cleanse with foam or micellar water, then any peeling, followed by serum, and finally cream. The mask is applied after cleansing, before serum. Reversing this order means that lighter preparations will not penetrate through the fat layer applied earlier.

How much serum should be applied to the face?

Three to four drops are enough for the entire face and neck. Serum is a concentrated preparation, and a larger amount does not yield better results, but only empties the bottle faster. Spread it with your fingertips, gently tapping, instead of rubbing. If the skin feels sticky after application, it is a sign that the amount was too large, not that the product is bad.

How often should I exfoliate my face?

Once or twice a week, depending on the type of peeling and the skin’s reaction. For sensitive skin, once every ten days is sufficient. Daily exfoliation weakens the skin barrier, which manifests as tightness, redness, and paradoxically increased sebum production. After each peeling, it is worth applying cream to rebuild the protective layer.

Does micellar water need to be rinsed off?

Most manufacturers recommend rinsing with water after use, even though the formula does not technically require it. Micelles remaining on the skin can cause a feeling of tightness or slight irritation for some people. If you use the liquid as the only cleansing step in the evening, rinsing is advisable. In the morning, when the skin is just refreshed, it can be skipped without much difference.

Can a mask be left on overnight?

It depends on the type of mask and what the manufacturer states. Cream masks and so-called overnight masks are designed for this, but clay and cleansing masks should be removed after the time indicated on the packaging, as they can dry out the skin. Keeping the mask on longer than recommended does not increase the effect.
