Vaporizers for herbs in this category are portable devices that heat herbal material without combustion. The most common models are X-Max and Fenix, including limited editions with the HERO brand, alongside HERO TYRIS PRO, XLUX ROFFU, and the mini vaporizer MIKKRO. The models differ in heating method, chamber, temperature range, and battery.

Heating method: conduction, convection, and hybrid

In conduction, the herb heats up from contact with the chamber wall. This is how the Starry 4 SE with a ceramic chamber works. In convection, hot air carries the heat that flows through the material, which is the basis for XLUX ROFFU.

Hybrid combines both methods. Hybrid heating is used by X-Max V3 PRO+ and V4 PRO in HERO editions and HERO TYRIS PRO. In V4 PRO, the airflow slider changes the ratio of convection to conduction in the vapor path, so it acts as a second adjustment alongside temperature.

Heating chamber and mouthpiece

The chamber made of medical-grade steel quickly absorbs heat and releases it well. This is the case for X-Max V3 PRO+ HERO and Fenix Mini+, while in V3 PRO+, the vapor flows further through a ceramic path, not through metal. The ceramic chamber of X-Max Starry 4.0 conducts heat more slowly but distributes it more evenly.

HERO TYRIS PRO has a titanium chamber, and Fenix Titanium PRO+ is made of medical titanium. XLUX ROFFU has two interchangeable chambers: one made of quartz glass and one made of medical steel. The chamber of Fenix Mini+ holds 0.1-0.15 g of material, as it is a pocket device, not a model for long sessions.

The mouthpiece changes the temperature of the vapor. In X-Max V4 PRO HERO, the 3D glass mouthpiece has protrusions that cool the vapor and acts as a 14 mm adapter for water pipes. Glass mouthpieces are also found in MIKKRO, HERO TYRIS PRO, and X-Max V3 PRO+ HERO.

Temperature and operating modes

X-Max V3 PRO+ and V4 PRO in HERO editions operate in the range of 100-220 °C, X-Max Starry 4.0 in the range of 100-240 °C, Fenix Mini+ 120-221 °C, HERO TYRIS PRO 160-230 °C, and XLUX ROFFU 60-220 °C. In V4 PRO, Starry 4.0, Fenix Mini+, and TYRIS PRO, the temperature is set in increments of 1 °C.

The session mode maintains the set temperature throughout the session, while the on-demand mode heats the chamber only when requested. Both modes are available in X-Max V3 PRO+, V4 PRO, and XLUX ROFFU, while Fenix Titanium PRO+ operates in on-demand mode. In HERO TYRIS PRO, you can set the session length between three to five minutes.

Heating takes about 20 seconds in XLUX ROFFU, TYRIS PRO, Starry 4.0, and Titanium PRO+, while in Fenix Mini+ it takes about 25-30 seconds.

Battery: removable or built-in

The removable 18650 battery is found in X-Max Starry 4.0 and V4 PRO, both with 2550 mAh, and XLUX ROFFU with a 3200 mAh battery. When the battery runs out, you insert a spare and continue working. The price is a slightly larger casing, as the battery has its diameter and length.

Fenix Mini+ has a built-in 1600 mAh battery charged via USB-C, so you cannot replace the battery on the go, but the device fits in a closed hand. X-Max V3 PRO+, V4 PRO, and TYRIS PRO also charge via USB-C, and Starry 4.0 can be used while charging.

Vaporizers for herbs: how to choose a model

If the device is to be always in your pocket, choose a small model with a built-in battery, like Fenix Mini+ or MIKKRO. For longer sessions and trips, a model with a removable battery, like X-Max V4 PRO or Starry 4.0, will be better.
