Vital mushrooms, also known as functional mushrooms, are species that have been present in the cuisine and tradition of East Asia for centuries, now available in the form of powders and standardized extracts. In this category, you will find reishi, lion’s mane, cordyceps, chaga, and several less common species, along with an explanation of the difference between fruiting body powder and double-extracted extract.
How to choose a vital mushroom product?
When it comes to mushrooms, the value of the product depends on the method of processing the raw material, not its quantity in the package. Two products with the same weight may contain completely different amounts of the substances for which mushrooms are sought.
1. Fruiting body or mycelium. This is the first question to ask when reading the label. The fruiting body is the part we commonly refer to as the mushroom. Mycelium grown on grain contains a mixture of substrate, which usually lowers the content of beta-glucans. A reliable manufacturer clearly states which part was used.
2. Double extraction. Mushrooms have a cell wall made of chitin, which the human body cannot digest. Water extraction releases polysaccharides, while alcohol extraction releases triterpenes. Double extraction combines both stages and is therefore the standard for products with a specific ingredient profile.
3. Content of beta-glucans, not polysaccharides. This is a distinction that is easy to confuse. A declaration stating high polysaccharide content may include starch from the substrate. The valuable number is that of beta-glucans, provided separately.
4. Degree of concentration. A notation like ten to one means that one gram of extract corresponds to ten grams of dried raw material. The higher the concentration, the smaller the dose provides the same starting material, but compare only extracts of the same type.
5. Confirmation of species. Mushrooms can be confused during harvesting and processing. Some manufacturers provide the results of genetic testing confirming the species, which is of real importance for raw materials collected in nature.
What you will find in the vital mushrooms category
The offer includes three forms. Powders and loose extracts can be added to coffee, cocoa, or smoothies. Capsules provide a measured dose without weighing. Multi-mushroom complexes combine several species in one serving and are a convenient starting point when you are not yet sure which species you want to get to know better.
Mushrooms are usually classified as adaptogens, so you will also find some products in the adaptogens category, and drinks with their addition in the cocoa category. More about the species themselves is written in the guide on coffee with mushrooms.
Four species you will encounter most often
Lion’s Mane, in English, is a white mushroom with characteristic hanging spines. In Asia, it is eaten as a vegetable. It contains hericenones and erinacines, compounds present respectively in the fruiting body and in the mycelium.
Reishi, or Ganoderma lucidum, grows on wood and is too hard to eat. Hence, the traditional form of consumption is a decoction, and nowadays an extract. It is the species richest in triterpenes, which are responsible for its distinctly bitter taste.
Cordyceps is available on the market in two varieties: militaris, grown on a substrate, and sinensis, harvested in the Himalayas and significantly more expensive. The vast majority of available preparations are cordyceps militaris, which the manufacturer should state clearly.
Chaga is a growth mainly found on birches in cold climates. It does not have a classic fruiting body, so the raw material is a hard, dark mass that is processed into an extract. It contains a lot of phenolic compounds, partially derived from the host wood.
How to use vital mushrooms
Powders are easiest to incorporate into your morning drink, as some species have a pronounced earthy flavor that pairs well with coffee and cocoa. Reishi is definitely bitter, so it works better in capsules or in an infusion with honey.
Manufacturers recommend daily doses ranging from several hundred milligrams of extract to several grams of powder, depending on the concentration. Mushrooms are usually taken regularly over a longer period, not occasionally. Start with the lower end of the recommended dose and observe how you react.
Safety and contraindications
A dietary supplement does not replace a varied diet. Do not use vital mushrooms during pregnancy and breastfeeding without consulting a doctor. Exercise caution when taking medications that affect blood clotting and immunosuppressive drugs, and consult a doctor before using the product.
People allergic to mold and mushroom spores should introduce mushroom preparations cautiously. Store products in a dry place out of reach of children. If you experience stomach discomfort after starting use, discontinue the product and contact a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mushroom powder and extract?
Powder is ground, dried raw material, in which the ingredients remain enclosed in the chitinous cell wall. Extract is created by boiling the raw material in water, alcohol, or both solvents sequentially, allowing the ingredients to pass into a solution, which is then concentrated. The extract is more concentrated, while the powder is cheaper and closer to the natural form of the mushroom.
How much beta-glucans should a good product contain?
On the market, a reference point is considered to be a content of around twenty to thirty percent beta-glucans in the extract, although the value depends on the species. More important than the number itself is whether the manufacturer provides beta-glucans separately, instead of declaring the total polysaccharide content, which may include starch from the cultivation substrate.
Can vital mushrooms be combined?
Yes, and this is precisely what multi-mushroom complexes do, combining several species in one serving. When combining products on your own, keep track of the total dose and check that the same species does not appear in two products at once. If you are taking medications regularly, discuss the combination with your doctor.
What time of day should mushrooms be taken?
Manufacturers rarely specify a specific hour, so convenience and the form of the product determine the timing. Powders added to coffee naturally fit into the morning routine, while capsules can be taken with any meal. If you notice a change in your sleep rhythm after an evening dose, move it to an earlier part of the day. A regular time can be more important than a specific hour, as it makes it easier not to miss a dose.
Is cordyceps sinensis better than militaris?
These are two different species with different ingredient profiles, not two quality classes of the same raw material. Sinensis is collected in nature at high altitudes, making it rare and expensive. Militaris is grown on a substrate, making it consistent and available. The vast majority of products on the market are based on militaris.
