In this category, we have gathered accessories used in home relaxation rituals: rubber cups, ear candles, and foot patches. They are connected by the fact that they are traditional products, not medical products, and that the way they are used determines safety more than the product itself.

What these accessories are and what they are not

These are products with a tradition spanning several centuries, present in cultures from China to Central Europe, now mainly used as part of a home relaxation ritual. None of them are medical products and none replace a visit to a doctor or prescribed treatment.

Manufacturers describe their effects in terms of tradition and comfort, rather than confirmed health benefits. It is worth approaching them from this perspective: as accessories that can be a pleasant element of the evening, rather than a solution to any health problem.

What you will find in the home care accessories category

The category includes rubber cups for massage, ear candles in sets of several pairs, and cleansing patches for feet, used overnight. All are intended for home use and do not require additional equipment.

Accessories for other purposes can be found in the accessories and storage categories, while skin care products are in the body cosmetics category. We also write about home rituals and regeneration on the blog, for example in the text about glycine for sleep and regeneration.

Rubber cups: how to use them

Rubber cups, unlike glass ones, do not require fire. They are squeezed in the hand, applied to oiled skin, and the pressure is released, creating a vacuum. The skin is previously covered with oil or balm so that the cup can move.

The massage with the cup is performed in a gliding motion along the muscles, avoiding the spine, bones, and areas around lymph nodes. The treatment usually lasts from five to ten minutes per area. Skin redness is normal, sharp pain is not and indicates that the vacuum was too strong or the cup was stationary.

Ear candles and patches: safety rules

Ear candles require the most caution of all the products in this category. They should never be used alone, without a second person, or on children. The flame remains an open fire close to hair and face, so a protective cover provided by the manufacturer, tied hair, and monitoring the burning marker are necessary.

Do not use ear candles with a damaged or perforated eardrum, with ear infections, after ear surgeries, with inserted drains, or with any discharge from the ear canal. If in doubt, consult a doctor before using them.

Patches for feet are applied to clean, dry skin overnight and removed in the morning. The darkening of the patch overnight results from the reaction of its ingredients with moisture and skin temperature and does not constitute any measurement or indicator.

Safety and contraindications

Products intended solely for home use, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. They are not medical products and do not replace medical consultation or prescribed treatment.

Do not use cups on damaged skin, on varicose veins, on moles, with bleeding disorders, and when taking anticoagulants, as well as during pregnancy. Do not use ear candles alone or on children. Store all products out of reach of children, and keep candles away from sources of fire. If any disturbing symptoms occur, discontinue use and contact a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Are marks from cups normal?

Redness and slight bruising of the skin after a cup massage are typical and usually subside within a few days. They result from the vacuum acting on capillaries. Sharp pain during the procedure, blisters, or marks lasting longer than a week indicate that the vacuum was too strong and require consultation.

How to prepare the skin for a cup massage?

The skin must be clean and oiled with oil or balm; otherwise, the cup will not slide but will pull at the skin. A thin layer of vegetable oil is sufficient. After the treatment, excess oil is washed off with warm water, and a moisturizing balm can be applied. The skin should also be warmed, as a cold cup holds less well and pulls more at the skin.

Can ear candles be used on children?

No. The procedure involves an open flame in close proximity to the head and requires stillness for several minutes, which cannot be ensured with a child. For ear problems in a child, the appropriate action is to visit a doctor, not a home procedure. This also applies to teenagers, as the risk of burns and damage to the ear canal does not depend on age.

Why does the foot patch darken at night?

The darkening results from the reaction of the patch’s ingredients, most often wood vinegar and plant extracts, with moisture and heat from the skin. You can achieve the same effect by moistening the patch with water. The color is not any measurement or indicator of the body’s condition. The intensity of the discoloration mainly depends on how much the foot sweats, not on anything else.

How often can these accessories be used?

Manufacturers usually provide intervals of several days, and with cups, it is recommended not to repeat the massage on the same area until the marks disappear. For patches and candles, stick to the number of treatments indicated in the instructions. More frequent use does not increase the effect, and with cups, it increases the risk of skin damage.
