Dried cannabis in which one of them dominates smells according to its composition, and this is normal variation, not a defect.

There are three warning smells. Mustiness and dampness are associated with wet hay or a basement and do not yield to the terpene aroma, but rather cover it. Ammonia indicates advanced decay processes involving microorganisms. The smell of grass without any terpenic note usually indicates over-drying or too long storage: the aroma has evaporated.

What does mold and gray mold look like on the flower?

Surface mold is a matte, powdery coating: white, gray, or greenish, most often in the depressions of the flower. Trichomes, which can be confused with it, are shiny and sticky, and under magnification have regular-shaped heads. Gray mold attacks the interior of the flower, so it may be invisible from the outside.

Gray mold is caused by Botrytis, a genus known from horticultural crops. Three species of Botrytis causing this disease in industrial cannabis crops have been described in Oregon (Garfinkel, Plant Disease, 2020). You will recognize it by the brown, soft interior of the flower and the gray, fluffy coating that is only visible after tearing it apart. The external appearance alone is not enough.

Health consequences can be serious. Gargani and colleagues described two cases of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis in individuals who had smoked marijuana for many years and reviewed the literature on invasive and allergic aspergillosis (Gargani et al., Mediterranean Journal of Hematology and Infectious Diseases, 2011). This is a description of two cases, not a population study, so it does not say how often such complications occur.

We have noticed that the most common mistake goes the other way and causes unnecessary stress. Kief, or the powder of trichomes that falls to the bottom of the package, is sometimes mistaken for mold. Kief is golden or greenish-yellow and shiny, and collects at the bottom. Mold is matte and sits on the flower itself. Golden powder at the bottom of the bag is a good sign, while a white coating on the flower is a cause for concern.

How to assess dried cannabis by sight and touch?

With your eyes, you check the color and presence of coating; with your touch, you check the moisture. Healthy dried cannabis has vibrant shades of green, often with rusty spots and visible trichomes. Properly dried flowers are resilient: they bend under your finger but are neither wet nor brittle.

A pale, brown, or yellowish color usually indicates age or poor storage conditions. Consistency says more than color. If the material crumbles to dust at the slightest touch, it is over-dried. If it is sticky and soft like a sponge, it has too much moisture and is at risk of mold.

A simple test is to try to break a thin stem. It should snap with a slight crunch. A stem that bends flexibly and does not want to break indicates excess moisture; one that crumbles without resistance indicates over-drying. However, none of these tests say anything about microbiological contamination, which is a separate question. A magnifying glass with a tenfold magnification helps distinguish coating from trichomes, but it will not show early fungal colonization either, as the hyphae may then be single and hidden deep within the flower.

What happens to dried cannabis that sits too long?

Its chemical composition changes, not just its smell. In stability studies, storage at room temperature accelerated the breakdown of THC to cannabinol (CBN). However, CBD-rich material retained good durability even under these conditions.

Majumdar’s team stored plant material of three types for an extended period, alongside extracts, isolates, and oil formulations. Storage occurred at room temperature, refrigeration, or freezing, and cannabinoid content was measured chromatographically. The authors’ conclusion is simple: the storage temperature must be matched to the product’s composition, as THC-rich material requires cool conditions, while products with a predominance of CBD tolerate room temperature (Majumdar et al., Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, 2026).

For the Polish buyer, this is practical information, as the legal market is dominated by CBD-rich material. However, this does not mean that age does not matter: terpenes are volatile and evaporate regardless of how cannabinoids behave, so old CBD-rich cannabis may retain its active substance content while having a completely flat smell.

How to store dried cannabis to prevent mold?

Airtight, cool, and without light access. Humidity is a two-sided problem here: excess promotes mold growth, while deficiency crumbles the flower and deprives it of aroma. Therefore, humidity-regulating containers are used for storage, not ordinary bags.

Regulators sold for this purpose maintain relative humidity at 62 percent, and glass containers may be equipped with a built-in hygrometer that allows you to monitor this value without opening. Why do you need a COA analysis certificate?

Because the senses will not detect what is most dangerous. A systematic review of cannabis contaminants lists among the most common microorganisms, heavy metals, and pesticide residues. None of these groups are visible or detectable, and they are determined by laboratory testing.

This same review is honest about the limits of knowledge. The authors state that the direct toxicity of these contaminants to humans is poorly measured, and the literature describing their prevalence and real impact on health is scarce (Dryburgh et al., British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, 2018). A certificate is therefore not a guarantee of health, but proof that someone checked a specific batch.

The practical conclusion concerns the batch, not the strain. The test result makes sense only when it refers to the same batch number that appears on the packaging, as growing, drying, and transport conditions differ between batches.
