What Does the Number Describing the Strength of the Flower Actually Measure?

The question about the strength of cannabis seems simple until you look beneath the number printed on the label. This number describes the share of one compound in the dry mass of the raw material at the time of testing a specific batch. It does not describe the strength of the experience or the dose taken, only the composition of the material, and from this distinction, everything else begins.

In unheated plant material, the acidic form predominates, denoted as THCA, which does not act psychoactively on its own. Only heating detaches the carboxyl group from it and converts it into the active form. Analytical reports usually provide a converted value, described as total THC, in which the content of the acidic form is multiplied by a factor of 0.877 and added to the neutral form.

The method of determination decides which of these values you actually see. Liquid chromatography works without heating the sample, so it separates both forms. Gas chromatography conducts the determination at high temperatures, which cleaves the carboxyl group even before detection, so its result is inherently a summed value. A report without the stated method does not allow you to compare two numbers with each other, even though they look identical on paper.

Sampling adds a third layer of uncertainty. The sample is tested, not the packaging, and the plant material is not homogeneous: resin accumulates unevenly within a single flower, let alone across an entire batch. The differences do not arise from bad intentions. Material from two manufacturers comes from different growing rooms, different harvesting schedules, and different laboratories, and each of these elements shifts the result. Additionally, time plays a role: after harvesting, the composition continues to change, the acidic form slowly transitions to neutral, and volatile compounds evaporate, so the packaging tested in March is not the same material in August.

Therefore, the question about the strength of a strain is poorly posed. The strain does not have strength; the batch does. What is currently available for purchase can be checked in the catalog of available items, and separate texts break down the individual ranges of declared content.

What Is the Manufacturer’s Tolerance for Declared Values?

This is the permissible deviation of the actual content from the value printed on the packaging, reaching ten percent of that value. A declaration described as twenty percent means a range of approximately eighteen to twenty-two, and a batch from any point in that range meets the declaration just as well.

Hence the rule adopted in this service: we provide the content as a range or do not provide it at all. A single number suggests precision that the measurement does not have, and the reader interprets it as a parameter of a drug. A range conveys exactly as much as is known and does not pretend to be more.

However, it can be worse than imprecise. Among the eighty-five cultivars in the list, fifteen have sources that provide a value but do not provide any tolerance with it. In that case, it is impossible to build even a range, so we do not provide values at all, instead of adding a margin on our own. We do not provide percentage shares anywhere because their sums do not add up to a whole: three comparisons of the same positions yielded three different results. Without a common basis, such a fraction cannot be compared between strains.

For this reason, a page about strength cannot be a ranking. A ranking would suggest that one value orders positions from weakest to strongest for every reader in the same way, and that is not the case even for two people with the same diagnosis. How Long Does It Take for the Flower to Take Effect and How Long Does the Effect Last?

Oral administration looks different and is often the source of confusion.

Swallowed raw material must first pass through the intestine and liver before anything reaches the bloodstream. Then the first symptoms appear after half an hour, sometimes after two, and they only subside after six, sometimes eight hours. Hence the most common mistake with the first oral dose: a second dose taken after half an hour meets the first dose later.

The declared strength does not shift these time frames. It changes how much active substance the same volume of material carries, which affects the dose, not the absorption process. Therefore, material with a higher declaration requires a different portion, not a different clock.

The provided ranges come from studies concerning the inhalation and oral routes themselves, not from research on any item from the list. Additionally, there are factors on the patient’s side: weight, previous experience with the drug, time since the last meal, and with inhalation, also the device setting and depth of inhalation. The vaporizer setting is, in fact, a separate trap, as the value on the display is not the temperature of the flower in the chamber.

What Is Known and What Is Not Known About the Relationship Between Strength and Effect?

It is known that the dose matters and that a higher content of active substance in the same portion of material means a higher dose. However, it is not known how a specific declaration translates into effect in a specific person, as there are simply no studies comparing named cultivars with each other.

The boundary here is sharper than it appears in texts about strains. The evidence base for this project includes works on individual volatile compounds, mostly conducted on rodents, and does not contain a single study measuring the effect of raw material with a specific declaration in a patient. Therefore, you will not find a number describing effectiveness or risk at a given strength: we would have nothing to support it.

Separately, there is the question of the consistency of declarations with independent measurements. Discrepancies between the label and the test result have been described in markets where flower is sold outside pharmacies, but transferring those conclusions to the Polish pharmaceutical market would be an abuse, as the approval process and supervision look different. For items from the Polish list, we do not know of any publicly available comparison of declarations with independent measurements.

What does this mean for the reader? That the question about the percentage number is weaker than the question of whether there is a study for a given batch and what exactly was tested. The first always has an answer, even when there is nothing behind it. The second may sometimes be unanswered, but when the answer appears, it actually means something.

What Side Effects Are Associated with Higher Declared Strength?

They primarily repeat: dry mouth, dizziness upon sudden standing, daytime drowsiness, and anxiety increasing with the dose. Reports of increased heart rate and temporary worsening of short-term memory are also noted. A higher declaration raises the dose, and with it the likelihood of these symptoms.

We cannot provide frequencies, and that is the answer, not an evasion. Reports of adverse effects are attributed to a specific product with a batch, not the number printed on the packaging, so there is no collection from which the frequency of a symptom for a given strength range could be derived. Everything that can be written here refers to hemp flower treated collectively, without breaking it down into individual items.

The risk increasing with the dose is described separately in the literature dedicated to cannabis use, primarily concerning psychological symptoms. We do not transfer those findings to specific pharmaceutical items, as they relate to a pattern of use, not a single package from the list. A new symptom that appears after starting therapy is a matter for the attending physician, not material for comparison with reports from forums.

Separately, one must consider the mutual interaction of preparations, primarily those that are sedative and affect coagulation. The strength of the raw material does not resolve anything here: the complete set of preparations taken matters, not the declaration on the label.

What to Look for Instead of Comparing Percentages?

Three things, all to be checked on the batch documents. First, whether the test report exists at all and whether it states the method of determination. Second, whether it separates individual components instead of providing just the sum. Third, whether the batch number on the document matches the number on the packaging.

It is also helpful to reverse the order of questions. The same mechanism works in the opposite direction: an item described as strong is not better for that reason; it is simply dosed differently.
