What is a strain profile made of and what can you check in it?
You walk into a hemp flower shop and see dozens of names: Gelato, OG Kush, Blue Dream, Sour Diesel. In a pharmacy, the same scene looks similar, only next to the name is the manufacturer. A strain profile consists of several layers of information of varying weight, and it contains less measurement than the label layout suggests.
The layers differ in who stands behind them. The pedigree is a declaration from the breeder. The content of active substances comes from batch testing done by the manufacturer and has a serial number. The composition of volatile compounds comes from databases describing the strain, not from the packaging you hold in your hand. You assess the appearance and smell yourself. The description of effects is most often a marketing material or a collection of user reports.

The practical difference is this: the two middle layers can be assigned to a document, while the rest remains a description. This does not mean that the description is worthless. It means that it should not be read as a result. The biggest misunderstandings arise from the last layer, as the promise of effect sounds like product information, but it is a statement about an impression that no one has measured in a patient with a prescription.
Why won’t you find percentages for terpenes here?

There is also a second reason, independent of arithmetic. The composition of volatile compounds changes with growing conditions, harvest time, and drying method, so even a reliable measurement pertains to one batch, not the strain as such. These compounds also evaporate during storage, so the older the designation, the less it says about the material in the package. Why do we provide THC content as a range and not a single number?
Because the value on the package is a declaration with tolerance, not a reading from your batch. The tolerance for the declared value reaches ten percent, so an item described by a single number practically falls within a range. Providing just the nominal value inflates precision by an order of magnitude, as it suggests a measurement made on what you have in hand.
The range comes from two things at once. The first is the allowable deviation from the declared value, both upwards and downwards. The second is the differences between batches of the same raw material, as the plant is not a weighed chemical substance. Additionally, the same strain name may be supplied by several manufacturers, each declaring its own value, so the range visible at the market level is broader than the range of a single item.
It also happens that a source provides just the nominal value without tolerance. In that case, we do not provide the content at all, instead of adding a range from our own head. Silence is an editorial decision here, not an oversight: a number added by intuition in a text about raw material dispensed by a doctor’s prescription looks exactly the same as a measured number, and the reader has no way to distinguish them. What does the strain pedigree say, and what can you not read from it?
The pedigree tells you from which lines the plant was derived, and that’s it. For a large part of the names present in Polish pharmacies, it remains unknown, as the breeder did not disclose it or the available sources contradict each other. We then record that it is unknown, instead of reconstructing it from the name. This is an answer, not a gap in the data.
The common part of the name is not evidence of kinship and does not work in either direction. The term Kush appears in the pharmacy list for both strains with established pedigrees and those whose origins no one has determined. If we were to consider the common word as evidence, families would arise counting dozens of plants having nothing in common except the label. The reverse mistake happens just as often: two strains without a common term in the name can have a documented common parent.
However, the pedigree can be useful in another way: it explains why descriptions of the same name diverge between sources. It does not say, however, what you will get in the pharmacy, as that is determined by the serial number on the package and the result of its testing. An empty list of related strains can also be a correct answer, not a gap: parents being entire breeding families do not determine siblings, as they are a category, not a single plant with an established identity.
Does the indica or sativa label help in choosing a strain?
Less than it promises. The division describes breeding tradition and the shape of the plant, not the composition of the material that goes to the pharmacy. The same label may be assigned to items with different profiles, so it is not sufficient as the only criterion for selection. It is also sometimes used interchangeably with the description of effect, which mixes two different layers of the profile.
In the pharmacy trade, hybrids prevail today, so the label more often describes a commercial family than a distinctly separate material. The popular distinction between daytime and nighttime strains is a convenient shorthand in conversation with a doctor, but the shorthand is not a designation of composition and does not refer to any document that could be verified.
For the patient, the practical conclusion is this: the label may narrow the choice at the start, but it determines something else. It determines what the manufacturer declares for a specific item, and how the body reacted to the material previously taken. The parameters of therapy are set by the attending physician, not the category listed on the package. It is also worth remembering that the same trade name from two manufacturers can have different category labels, even though the strain name remains the same.
What won’t the strain profile tell you about effects in a patient?
It won’t tell you how it will work for you. There are practically no clinical studies conducted on named cultivars, and studies on individual compounds have most often been performed on rodents or in cell culture. The result from such a model does not transfer directly to humans and does not become a statement about the strain.
The profile is also not a source of knowledge about adverse effects attributed to the strain. The supervision of pharmacotherapy safety collects reports for the medicinal product, not for the strain name, so descriptions such as dry mouth, daytime drowsiness, or increased heart rate refer to hemp flower as a group of raw materials. Attributing them to one name would suggest knowledge that no one has gathered.
What does the profile really provide? It allows you to compare two items in the same categories and notice that the manufacturer or version has changed when the pharmacy dispenses something different than before. This is the real value of this document and a sufficient reason to read it. It also allows you to name the difference in conversation with the attending physician, instead of describing it as an impression after changing the packaging. The rest, namely the promise of a specific effect, has no backing in the available material and will not be added here.
