How to use the Volcano Hybrid step by step?

How much herb to fill and how finely to grind it? S&B only mentions a “desired amount” and does not specify either the portion or the grind size. The screens ensure that particles do not enter the balloon. The upper screen in the lid is pressed from below into its groove. What do the capsules change? A capsule is a small, replaceable chamber for one portion, so instead of the full 600 mg, you heat a smaller amount. How much exactly it holds, S&B does not specify. Stores mention about 150 mg or 0.2 g, but these numbers vary and do not come from the manufacturer. In the support for the Classic and Digit models, S&B also mentions a magazine for up to 8 capsules.

You can find Storz & Bickel dosing capsules in the accessories and parts for vaporizers category. With a set of 40 capsules, the manufacturer states that they fit all its devices and are single-use. In the Hybrid, S&B provides for them an adapter or a chamber with a reducer.

How to use the Volcano Hybrid with a balloon?

You fill the balloon with the pump on the heated chamber, remove it, attach the mouthpiece, and inhale the vapor immediately (Storz & Bickel, Operation). You start only when the actual temperature matches the set temperature. According to S&B, fully heating before attaching the balloon and turning on the pump gives denser vapor and better flavor (Storz & Bickel, Temperature Settings).

Before attaching, stretch the balloon to make it tight, and place it vertically on the chamber. The AIR button turns on the pump. You turn it off yourself when the balloon has as much vapor as you want. Then you remove the balloon. The chamber is hot at that time, so S&B instructs to hold it only by the handles around it and place it on a heat-resistant surface.

Finally, insert the mouthpiece into the balloon valve and start inhaling immediately. Lightly rest your lips on the mouthpiece and breathe evenly for a few seconds. Why the rush? The large surface area of the balloon cools the vapor, which is why the manufacturer recommends inhaling right after filling (Storz & Bickel, EASY VALVE).

How much vapor to fill at once? For the Hybrid, S&B does not provide a time limit. In the support articles for the Volcano Classic and the SOLID VALVE, the manufacturer advises filling only as much as you will use within 10 minutes. With the SOLID VALVE, it adds to turn off the pump at about 90% of the balloon’s volume. These are recommendations for other versions, but they agree with the advice for the Hybrid: inhale quickly.

Do not blow into the hose. S&B associates its length with cooling the vapor, so do not shorten the original hose. Replace it every two weeks and do not share it with others (Storz & Bickel, Operation).

Online, you may find descriptions of using the hose with the pump on. This is an idea from one reviewer (Portland Mercury, 2019), not a recommendation from the manufacturer. S&B’s support for the Hybrid states explicitly to turn off the pump before using the hose.

How to set the temperature in the Volcano Hybrid?

The number on the display is not the temperature of the herb. S&B measures it at the heat exchanger, not in the chamber. When the pump is running, the display shows approximate values. How to clean the Volcano Hybrid?

Before cleaning, turn off the Volcano Hybrid and unplug it from the outlet (Storz & Bickel, Cleaning). The chamber with the lid and the hose must cool down before you disassemble them. Wipe the housing with a soft, slightly damp cloth: the device must not get wet. Clean the chamber parts and Tube Flexer with the mouthpiece using isopropyl alcohol on paper or a cotton cloth or warm water with dish soap.

Do not soak plastic parts in isopropanol for more than 30 minutes. S&B excludes steel wool and metal brushes, as well as needles and aggressive cleaning agents. Before turning it back on, wait for the vapors of the flammable agent to evaporate (Storz & Bickel, Operation).

When to clean? According to the manufacturer, thoroughly and regularly, and always before use by another person and when attaching a new balloon or hose. S&B’s support describes disassembly as follows (Storz & Bickel, Disassembling):

1. Lid: push out the upper screen and remove the ring, then push the lid cylinder down.
2. Chamber: push the cylinder up, and then the lower screen.
3. Hose: remove the Tube Flexer and mouthpiece.
4. Assembly: in reverse order.

How often to replace the balloon and filter in the Volcano Hybrid?

For a balloon that does not fill and for a burnt taste, S&B does not have separate advice. The general rule from the manufacturer, described for the Classic model, is: do not use a damaged device, and in case of a malfunction, unplug it and stop working.
