Vaporizer produces no vapor or scratches the throat: what to check according to manufacturers
The vaporizer does not produce vapor, scratches the throat, or tastes burnt? Causes and solutions according to manufacturers: Storz & Bickel, PAX, Arizer, and DynaVap.
The vaporizer heats up, but there is no vapor? Or there is, but it scratches the throat and tastes burnt? Manufacturers describe these symptoms in their instructions and help pages. They usually start with operation, and only later mention a malfunction. Storz & Bickel advises to first clean the mouthpiece, cooling unit, and chamber for weak vapor. PAX reminds that a stronger inhale adds air, not vapor. This guide collects such tips from six manufacturers: Storz & Bickel, PAX, Arizer, DynaVap, Topgreen (X-Max brand), and Weecke (Fenix Mini+). For each cause, we provide who describes it. You will learn what to check for a given symptom, what error codes mean, and when the problem is a malfunction to report.
KEY INFORMATION
• A gentle inhale lasts 3-5 seconds, and a stronger one adds air, not vapor (PAX).
• Weak vapor in Mighty+ and Crafty+: first cleaning, then a leak test of the cooling unit (Storz & Bickel).
• Throat scratching: lower the temperature (Storz & Bickel).
• Smoke in DynaVap: do not inhale it, empty the material, cool the device, and clean the tip (DynaVap).
• Code 004 in Mighty+ and 04n in Volcano Hybrid are malfunctions to be serviced.
What to check first when the vaporizer does not work as usual?
First, identify the symptom and compare it with the cause provided by the manufacturer. Most advice in the instructions relates to operation, not failure. Manufacturers only point to a malfunction later, for example, when the cooling unit of Mighty+ fails the leak test or the device shows an error code (Storz & Bickel).
| Symptom | Probable Cause | What to Check | Who Provides This |
|---|---|---|---|
| no vapor at the beginning of the session | device is still heating up | inhale only after the readiness signal | Storz & Bickel, PAX, Arizer |
| no vapor despite heating | dirt or leaky cooling unit | cleaning, then leak test | Storz & Bickel (Mighty+, Crafty+) |
| vapor disappears during the session | exhausted material | check if there is still vapor at the highest temperature | Storz & Bickel (Veazy) |
| weak vapor | too strong inhale or low mode | gentle inhale 3-5 s, higher mode during the session | PAX |
| difficult inhale | overfilled or packed chamber, clogged screen | load without packing; replace clogged screen | Storz & Bickel, Arizer, Topgreen |
| throat scratching | very intense vapor at high temperature | lower temperature | Storz & Bickel |
| too warm vapor | manufacturer only provides recommendations | flat mouthpiece, slightly packed material, clean vapor channel | PAX (FOUR) |
| smoke in manual device | overheating after clicking the tip | do not inhale; empty, cool down, clean | DynaVap |
| does not turn on | empty battery, its temperature or incompatible cable | charging, warm place, original cable | Storz & Bickel |
| turns off during the session | automatic shutdown or overheating | press the button; cool down | Storz & Bickel, PAX |
Not every manufacturer describes every symptom. Weecke does not publish instructions for Fenix Mini+ online, so for this model, the box instructions remain. Topgreen provides a short list of tips for X-Max V3 Pro: fine grinding, loose packing, starting at low temperature, and slow inhales.
Why does the vaporizer not produce vapor?
The first thing to check is the moment of inhalation. Storz & Bickel advises in portable models to start inhaling only after heating is complete. For Volcano Hybrid, the manufacturer recommends checking if the actual temperature matches the setting, if the chamber and balloon are properly attached, and if the material is fresh. Readiness signals according to manufacturers:
- Mighty+ and Venty: double vibration, and in Venty also a green display (Storz & Bickel).
- Crafty+: two vibrations and a steady green LED (Storz & Bickel).
- PAX Mini 2 and FOUR: green LEDs (PAX).
- Solo III in On Demand mode: all stripes yellow; Air MAX: two beeps (Arizer).
- Fenix Mini+: mouthpiece lights up green (Weecke).
- DynaVap: click of the tip (DynaVap).
In on-demand mode, the device does not heat itself. Solo III heats up when you press the up arrow, and vapor stops flowing when all stripes turn gray (Arizer). X-Max V3 Pro in this mode heats when you hold the power button until the device vibrates (Topgreen).
Exhausted material will also not produce vapor. Veazy’s instructions state that the material can be vaporized again until it stops producing vapor at the highest temperature. When the device is heated and the material is fresh, Storz & Bickel advises to clean the vapor channel: mouthpiece with the cooling unit and chamber. The means and order of cleaning different models are described in the guide cleaning the vaporizer: how and with what.
Why is the vapor weak, even though the vaporizer is heating?
PAX associates weak vapor with inhalation technique and heating mode. According to the manufacturer, a stronger or longer inhale adds air, not vapor. PAX recommends gentle inhales for 3-5 seconds, breaks between them, and increasing the mode during the session. The brand’s motto is: “Sip it, don’t rip it”.
A higher mode produces more vapor but drains the battery faster (PAX on the FOUR model). In Mini 2, the first purple mode is described as minimal, discreet vapor, and the fourth, orange, as maximum. After cooling down, PAX advises to stir the material in the chamber and press it down again.
Storz & Bickel describes inhalation similarly: evenly, for several seconds, about half of the possible inhale. Slow inhales are also recommended by Topgreen for X-Max V3 Pro.
Should you just increase the temperature? Veazy’s instructions call this a last resort, as the taste is less pleasant at higher temperatures. Arizer states that with a bubbler, higher temperature gives denser vapor. In Volcano Hybrid, the display shows the temperature of the heat exchanger, not the chamber. Storz & Bickel adds that what you inhale depends on the amount of material, the setting, and the length and strength of the inhale.
Do grinding and packing the chamber affect the amount of vapor?
Yes, but manufacturers advise differently here. Storz & Bickel states that finely ground material has a larger surface area, while DynaVap says that finer grinding works better. Arizer recommends coarse grinding, and PAX for FOUR recommends medium-fine. One common warning is that an overfilled or tightly packed chamber makes inhalation difficult (Storz & Bickel).
| Model | Grinding | Packing | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mighty+, Crafty+ | crushed, no size specified | to the plastic edge, without packing and overfilling | Storz & Bickel |
| Venty, Veazy | the finer, the larger the surface area | to the edge; overfilling makes inhalation difficult | Storz & Bickel |
| PAX FOUR | medium fine | slightly press down, about 0.3 g, do not pack | PAX |
| PAX Mini 2 | contradictory advice: medium fine or medium, not fine | pack tightly, to full | PAX |
| Solo III, Air MAX | coarse or whole flowers | slightly press down, leave 1-2 mm of space | Arizer |
| DynaVap M7 | finer works better | loose for more air; tight for more flavor, but harder to inhale | DynaVap |
| X-Max V3 Pro | fine | loose, without overfilling | Topgreen |
| Fenix Mini+ | no data available online | no data available online | Weecke |
There are significant differences even within one brand: PAX advises to slightly press the material in FOUR, while in Mini 2, it should be pressed tightly. We did not find studies on particle size in vaporizers, so the instructions for your model decide. How to grind, how much to pack, and how to store the material is explained in the guide how to prepare material for the vaporizer. You can find grinding equipment in the grinders category.
Why does the vaporizer scratch the throat or taste burnt?
Storz & Bickel associates scratching with very intense vapor at high temperature and recommends lowering the temperature. This is stated in the instructions for Mighty+, Venty, and Veazy. According to the manufacturer, higher temperature also worsens the taste. The Crafty+ instructions state it directly: the more intense the vapor, the worse the taste.
PAX advises a flat mouthpiece for too warm vapor in the FOUR model. The material should be fresh and ground medium-fine, and the chamber only slightly packed. The manufacturer also recommends cleaning the vapor channel.
In Volcano Hybrid, the large surface area of the balloon cools the vapor, so Storz & Bickel advises inhaling it immediately after filling. When using a hose, the manufacturer recommends the original, appropriately long hose, so the vapor has time to cool down. Before using the hose, the pump must be turned off, and do not blow into the hose itself.
And the burnt taste? We did not find a separate recommendation for this symptom in Storz & Bickel’s materials. The closest is the recommendation to lower the temperature. Smoke in a manual device is described in the next section.
Venty’s instructions advise seeing a doctor in case of coughing, shortness of breath, or chest pain. Storz & Bickel also recommends stopping the use of portable models when symptoms appear. From what temperature to start a session is explained in the guide vaporization temperature: what to set and why.
What to do if smoke appears in DynaVap?
Smoke indicates that the material is burning. DynaVap then advises not to inhale the smoke, empty the material, completely cool the device, and clean the tip. Signs of overheating according to the manufacturer are sharp vapor and a blue or purple coating on the tip. Among common mistakes, DynaVap mentions heating after clicking. The M7 instructions on the manufacturer’s page look like this:
- Remove the tip and fill the end.
- Put the tip back on.
- Hold the flame of the torch about 2.5 cm from the tip, rotate it, and aim at the letter N in the logo.
- Wait for the click (according to M7 instructions about 7 seconds).
- Take a breath.
- Before the next heating, wait for the second click while cooling down.
For one load, there are 2-4 heating cycles. Other common mistakes according to DynaVap include heating the end of the tip instead of the middle and heating without rotating. DynaVap’s pages are not consistent here: the M7 instructions state about 7 seconds to click, the FAQ advises to stop if there is no click after more than 4 seconds, and the M model page after 6. If there is no click, stop and let the tip cool down. In case of burning, DynaVap also advises to preheat the tip to click and cool it down before the actual session.
According to the manufacturer, an induction heater makes it harder to burn the material and provides more even results, while a torch requires practice. Do not touch the heated end and do not put it in your mouth. Do not soak the tip; if it gets wet, DynaVap advises to wait 24 hours before heating. Battery-free devices can be found in the manual vaporizers category.
Why is it difficult to inhale through the vaporizer?
Storz & Bickel lists two causes of difficult inhalation: an overfilled or too tightly packed chamber and a clogged screen. According to Venty and Veazy’s instructions, a clogged screen needs to be replaced. The manufacturer advises to clean the cooling unit no later than 7 days after the last use or earlier if residue is visible.
Residues of material in the cooling unit can clog it and enter the inhaled air (Storz & Bickel). According to Venty’s instructions, dosing capsules may restrict airflow. In Venty, resistance is also changed by the knob: one cut is almost closed airflow, three is fully open.
In PAX FOUR, a flat mouthpiece slows down airflow, and the manufacturer lists replacing the mouthpiece as a way to change resistance. In Volcano Hybrid, particles of material in the balloon indicate a clogged screen in the lid, a screen pushed out of the groove, or an uncleaned chamber.
The purpose of screens and dosing capsules is described in the guide vaporizer accessories. Spare screens and mouthpieces for X-Max and Fenix are sometimes available in the vaporizer accessories and parts category.
Why does the vaporizer fail to turn on or turn off by itself?
Storz & Bickel lists four reasons why Mighty+ does not turn on: empty battery, battery too warm or too cold, incompatible charger or cable, and malfunction. Venty and Mighty+ (code 005) also react to air being blown into the device. The manufacturer does not allow heating cold equipment with a stove, microwave, or lighter.
Solo III will not start on a completely empty battery. It works after 5-10 minutes of charging, and Air MAX after 15-20 minutes (Arizer). Some models do not work at all with the charger: Crafty+ and Veazy according to Storz & Bickel, Starry 4 according to Topgreen. Mighty+ only works with the Supercharger of at least 15 V/3 A. Fenix Titanium PRO+ does not work during charging, as reported by sellers.
Turning off during a session may simply be an automatic shutdown. Mighty+ according to Storz & Bickel turns off 3 minutes after the last button press or use, and weak inhales may not reset the counter. A short press of the button resets it anew. Times according to manufacturers:
| Model | Turns off after | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Crafty+, Venty | 2 min (Crafty+ in the app 1-5 min) | Storz & Bickel |
| Mighty+, Veazy | 3 min | Storz & Bickel |
| Volcano Hybrid | 30 min (factory setting) | Storz & Bickel |
| Solo III | 5-20 min (Session), 5-60 min (On Demand) | Arizer |
| Air MAX | 5-15 min, default 10 | Arizer |
| Fenix Mini+ | 4 min of inactivity | Weecke |
| X-Max V3 Pro, on-demand mode | standby after 30 s, off after another 120 s | Topgreen |
PAX only describes shutdown due to overheating: FOUR turns off when a high temperature is maintained for too long and works again after cooling down.
What do error codes and flashing LEDs mean?
Error codes are published by Storz & Bickel for Mighty+ and Volcano Hybrid, and LED patterns for Crafty+. PAX describes the overheating signal in Mini 2 and FOUR. In Volcano Hybrid, the letter r after the number means that a reset is sufficient, and the letter n means that service is needed (Storz & Bickel).
| Model | Signal | Meaning | Manufacturer’s Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mighty+ | ERR 001 / e01 | battery overheated | wait until it cools down |
| Mighty+ | ERR 002 / e02 | battery too cold | warmer place, no external heating |
| Mighty+ | 003 / e03 | incompatible charger or cable | original parts |
| Mighty+ | 004 / e04 | malfunction | turn off, disconnect power, service |
| Mighty+ | ERR 005 / e05 | air blown into the device | do not exhale into the mouthpiece |
| Volcano Hybrid | BL 000 | software error | update via app |
| Volcano Hybrid | ERR 01r | internal communication error | restart |
| Volcano Hybrid | ERR 02r | temperature out of range or overheating | turn off, disconnect, leave for 30 min at room temperature |
| Volcano Hybrid | ERR 03r | wrong voltage | check 115 V or 230 V version |
| Volcano Hybrid | ERR 04n | device damaged | RMA report |
| Crafty+ | red and blue alternating | battery too hot or too cold | not specified |
| Crafty+ | blue blinking | empty battery | not specified |
| Crafty+ | red and green alternating | incompatible USB-C cable | not specified |
| Crafty+ | red and orange alternating | malfunction | immediately turn off, disconnect from charger, do not repair yourself |
| PAX Mini 2 | petals alternate red and orange 4 times, then it turns off | overheating | not specified |
| PAX FOUR | four LEDs pulse orange or red, then turn off | overheating | 30 min cooling down, lower mode, shorter sessions |
Venty and Veazy also report errors with codes and LEDs. The instructions list the same causes as for Mighty+, and Veazy adds a failed software update. Check the meaning of a specific code in your device’s instructions. On the support pages, Solo III and Air MAX Arizer do not provide a list of errors.
Why is the effect weaker than usual?
The instructions describe causes on the equipment and material side, and these overlap with the causes of weak vapor. Storz & Bickel states that in Volcano Hybrid, what you inhale depends on the amount of material, the setting, and the length and strength of the inhale. This text does not evaluate effects on the body.
For Volcano Hybrid, the manufacturer advises to heat the device to full setting before attaching the balloon and turning on the pump, as this affects vapor density and taste. Vapor in the balloon cools down, so you inhale it immediately. Storz & Bickel’s tips for Volcano Classic say to fill the balloon only with what you will use within 10 minutes.
With a weakening battery, you need to wait longer: Storz & Bickel states that the heating time for Mighty+ and Venty depends on the battery charge and ambient temperature. A higher mode in PAX FOUR drains it faster. According to Venty’s instructions, cleanliness is a condition for proper operation of the device.
The material itself also matters. In a study by Milay and colleagues (Frontiers in Plant Science, 2020), ground material lost more terpenes during storage than whole flowers. Fairbairn and colleagues (Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, 1976) identified light as the largest single factor in cannabinoid loss. Discard material with visible mold. For a recalled batch due to exceeding limits of yeast, mold, and bacteria, Health Canada recommended to stop using it immediately.
When is it a malfunction and where to report it?
A malfunction is indicated by signals that operation does not eliminate. For Mighty+, this is code 004, for Crafty+ flashing red and orange LEDs, and for Volcano Hybrid code 04n. Storz & Bickel then directs to device registration and RMA reporting. The same applies when vapor does not return after cleaning and replacing a leaky cooling unit. Where to report the problem depends on the manufacturer:
- Storz & Bickel: registration and RMA reporting. The Mighty+ battery is only replaced by the manufacturer’s service, and shorter operating time after hundreds of charging cycles is considered normal by the manufacturer.
- Arizer: email to service@arizer.com. Include a description of the problem, shipping details, serial number from the bottom of the device, and receipt.
- PAX: for FOUR, the manufacturer provides a 2-year warranty plus one year after registration within 30 days (conditions from the USA; for the EU, PAX does not provide them).
- DynaVap: lifetime warranty on operational defects of M series models; when purchased in-store, first contact the seller.
- Weecke (Fenix Mini+): 12 months warranty, report through the seller; Polish sellers provide 2 years.
Do not open the devices: Arizer warns against electric shock and loss of warranty. Parts from other companies may void the warranty according to Storz & Bickel. After dropping Solo III, Arizer advises to leave the device in a safe place for at least an hour and check if it is heating up.
Some units of Arizer Solo III Intergalactic/Black are subject to a recall announced by the CPSC in June 2026 due to battery-related risks: check the beginning of the serial number on the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the vaporizer not produce vapor, even though it is heated?
Storz & Bickel advises to clean the mouthpiece, cooling unit, and chamber first. Then perform a leak test: remove the cooling unit and cover the air inlet, then try to draw air through the mouthpiece. If air passes through, the unit needs to be replaced. Vapor also disappears from exhausted material: according to Veazy’s instructions, such material does not produce vapor even at the highest temperature.
What to do if the vaporizer scratches the throat?
Lower the temperature. This is recommended by the instructions for Mighty+, Venty, and Veazy, as very intense vapor at high temperatures can irritate the respiratory tract and worsen the taste. PAX advises a flat mouthpiece and slightly packed material for too warm vapor in the FOUR model, as well as a clean vapor channel. In case of coughing or shortness of breath, Venty’s instructions advise seeing a doctor.
Does the vaporizer work while charging?
It depends on the model. Mighty+ works with the charger only with the Supercharger of at least 15 V/3 A, while Crafty+ and Veazy do not work at all (Storz & Bickel). Solo III can be used after 5-10 minutes of charging, and Air MAX after 15-20 minutes (Arizer). Topgreen advises against using Starry 4 while charging.
What does error code ERR 005 mean in Mighty+?
According to Storz & Bickel, ERR 005, also displayed as e05, indicates air being blown into the device. The same error is listed among the causes of problems with Venty. Other Mighty+ codes relate to battery issues (001 and 002), incompatible cable or charger (003), and malfunction (004), which needs to be taken to service.
How often should I clean the vaporizer to prevent weak vapor?
Storz & Bickel recommends brushing the screens of Mighty+ and Crafty+ after each use. Clean the cooling unit of Venty and Veazy no later than 7 days after the last session, and earlier if residue is visible. PAX advises cleaning Mini 2 every 3-5 sessions. According to Venty’s instructions, cleanliness is a condition for proper operation.
What to do if DynaVap does not click?
DynaVap advises heating the middle of the tip, not its end, and rotating it in the flame. If there is no click, stop and let the tip cool down. DynaVap’s pages are not consistent here: the M7 instructions state about 7 seconds to click, the FAQ advises to stop after more than 4 seconds, and the M model page after 6. DynaVap prohibits heating after clicking, as it may permanently damage the tip.
