What is a hemp shot and how does it differ from oil?

A hemp shot is a ready-to-drink beverage based on hemp seed oil, sold in a bottle with a measuring cup. You measure a serving and drink it without holding anything under your tongue. Oil is an oil preparation dosed with a dropper, usually in drops, in a bottle ten times smaller.

The difference is not just about convenience. Sublingual oil can absorb some of the substance through the mucous membrane before it reaches the stomach. A shot goes to the stomach in its entirety, so manufacturers use emulsifiers to ensure the oil disperses in water instead of settling on the walls of the bottle. Therefore, when it comes to hemp drinks, the question of emulsification technology is more significant than with oils.

The composition of a typical shot is built around three layers: a carrier, which is water and fruit juices, hemp seed oil, and flavoring and functional additives. Juices are not just decoration, as they mask the earthy note of hemp oil, which many people find off-putting in classic oils. An emulsifier on the ingredient list determines whether each serving from the bottle is equally thick.

What is known about absorption, and what is not known?

Here you need to be cautious, as there are many unsupported numbers circulating on the internet. A systematic review covering 24 pharmacokinetic studies in humans states directly: besides smoking, no absolute bioavailability of cannabidiol has been attempted to be established for any route of administration, and for smoking, it was 31% (Millar et al., Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2018). The popular “13-19% sublingually” does not come from this review, although it is sometimes attributed to it.

Caution is also required for the opposite number, often repeated as “about 6% for the oral route.” It exists in the literature, but it is not anyone’s measurement provided at this address: it stands in the introductory part of the work Nie et al. (Frontiers in Nutrition, 2024) as a sentence referring to three earlier publications, and the own measurements of this work were performed in laboratory conditions and on Sprague Dawley rats. Citing it as a source of the 6% value is therefore a shortcut, not a reading from the result.

What can be said reliably? That absorption is low and variable. EFSA in its position from 2026 summarizes it in one sentence: the bioavailability of cannabidiol is variable and depends on the carrier and intake with food (EFSA, EFSA Journal, 2026).

The strongest single number in this area concerns food. In the Stott study, referenced in Millar’s review, twelve men received a single dose of 10 mg of cannabidiol; after a meal, the area under the curve increased from 4.5 to 23.1, and the maximum concentration from 1.2 to 3.7 ng/ml, while the time to peak extended from 1.4 to 4.0 hours. A significant caveat is that a subbuccal aerosol containing THC was administered, not a drink or swallowed oil. The direction is therefore well documented, but the value pertains to a different form of the preparation. Why does oil provide greater serving resolution?

This is the only dimension in which the advantage of oil is clear and does not depend on prices or interpretation of studies. A drop can be counted, and with a change in quantity, you can go down or up by one. A drink is measured with a measuring cup included with the bottle: you can still divide half a serving, but practically not a quarter.

Higher concentrations are also the domain of oils. A 10 ml bottle with a declared content of 2000 mg is a level that a fruit drink does not reach, as the carrier in it is water with juices, not oil itself. The same difference works in the other direction with low contents: in a drink diluted to a drinkable taste, it is difficult to go below a certain threshold, while oil can easily go there.

Resolution also matters when you simply want to return to the same. A drop is a repeatable unit between bottles of the same concentration, while a measuring cup cannot be compared between brands, as each has its own volume and its own way of describing potency.

The practical conclusion is that both formats do not compete for the same place. Oil is a precise and capacious tool. A drink is a tool for repeatable use without counting drops. How much to actually take is indicated by the label of the specific preparation, and for medications taken regularly, this is determined by a doctor, not a table in an article.

When does a shot have a real advantage?

Besides convenience, which every guide mentions, a hemp drink has three advantages that are rarely mentioned.

• Regularity. A product that tastes good is simply drunk. A bottle of oil set aside after a week due to an earthy aftertaste has zero bioavailability, regardless of what studies say.
• Functional additives. L-theanine, vitamins B6 and B12, or melatonin appear in the descriptions of drinks, and among oils from this offer, they do not occur. These often determine whether the product is suitable for morning or evening use.
• Ready emulsion. An emulsifier in the composition means that the oil is already dispersed in water, which is in conditions similar to those that favored absorption in pharmacokinetic studies.

There is also the opposite situation, where the drink performs worse, and it makes no sense to hide it. With a high daily required content, a high-concentration oil is simply more capacious: 2000 mg fits in a bottle that you can hide in your pocket, while the same content in a drink means several bottles from the fridge.

The second weakness of drinks is durability after opening. Oil in a dark bottle stands in the cupboard, while a drink after opening goes into the refrigerator and is subject to the expiration date provided on the label. For someone who drinks daily, this does not matter; for someone who reaches for the product occasionally, oil will survive breaks better. How to read a hemp shot label?

The label says much more than the name on the front of the bottle; you just need to know where to look. EU regulations on consumer information require that ingredients be listed in descending order by weight (European Commission, food labeling). Thanks to this one rule, you can read from the ingredient list what is most abundant in the bottle and what is present in trace amounts.

The rest of the work involves finding two numbers that allow you to compare the bottle with any other: declared content and serving size. If the manufacturer provides only one of them or none, comparison with the competition becomes impossible, and that in itself is information about the product.

When browsing the offer, a repeating pattern is visible: brands that do provide milligrams usually include them directly in the product name, such as Elixir Panoramixa Strong+ 650 or Hemp Shot OG Kush 490 mg. Brands that describe potency with words hide numbers in the specification table under the description or do not provide them anywhere. If after reading the entire product card you still do not know how much active substance the manufacturer declares, treat this as a warning signal.

The Polish market looks different from the American one, which most guides discuss. Here, five brands are realistically available in retail and shipping, and these are the ones on the shelf instead of drinks known from foreign listings.

How much does a hemp shot cost and how to compare prices?

The price of the bottle itself says little until you know the declared content. Two bottles at the same price may declare different amounts of active substance, and without this number, you are only comparing volume and taste.

The conversion that can be calculated independently is the price divided by the declared content in milligrams. For items that provide this number in the name, it comes out immediately at the cart. For the others, it does not come out at all, and that is an honest answer: for most variants of Green Out, such a conversion cannot be calculated because the manufacturer does not declare milligrams in the item description.

Two caveats need to be stated directly. Oils declare milligrams of cannabidiol, while drinks most often declare milligrams of phytocomponents or full spectrum content, so the units are not fully equivalent, and the conversion shows an order of magnitude, not equivalence. The table describes only that part of the shelf that declares its content.

Where the conversion can be calculated, the result contradicts the common belief: the price ranges per milligram for both formats overlap instead of dividing the market into cheap oil and expensive drink. The lowest price per milligram in this comparison belongs to the drink. What to look for when choosing your first shot?

Order matters. Beginners most often look first at taste and price, and these two criteria make sense to resolve at the end, when you already know that you are comparing comparable bottles.

• Declared content per serving, not per bottle. A bottle with a declared content of 650 mg sounds stronger than one with 490 mg, but what matters is how much is in one serving from the measuring cup. Without the number of servings, the content of the bottle does not resolve anything.
• Emulsification technology. An emulsifier or nanoemulsion in the composition is not a marketing gimmick, but a response to a physical problem: oil does not mix with water on its own.
• Auxiliary composition. Melatonin, L-theanine, or vitamins change the use of the drink more than the hemp content itself. A variant marked as Sleep is not suitable for morning use.
• Clarity of description. If the manufacturer does not provide either milligrams in the bottle or per serving, you have no way to compare it with the competition.
• Taste and format. A drink with a flavor you do not like ends up as an unfinished bottle in the fridge, and that is the most expensive possible outcome of a purchase.

We consciously do not add a sixth point about what potency to start with. There is no data that would justify such advice, and with a food product containing hemp, the conversation about quantity belongs to a doctor or pharmacist, especially if you are taking medications regularly.

When to drink a hemp shot and how to store it?

The time of day depends not on the hemp itself, but on the additives. Variants with melatonin and those marked as Sleep are directed for the evening, while series described as Energy or enriched with B vitamins are for the first half of the day. You can read this distinction from the name of the item and the ingredient list before you even open the bottle.

Storage is of real importance for drinks, as the bottle remains open for many days. After opening, keep the shot in the refrigerator and use it within the time indicated on the label. Light and temperature break down both plant ingredients and added vitamins, so a bottle on the windowsill loses value faster than you can drink it.

The time after which the effect appears is influenced by the form of administration. In a crossover study on 14 healthy volunteers, the self-nanoemulsifying preparation reached peak metabolite concentration of cannabidiol after 1.11 hours, while classic oil drops needed 4.68 hours, and the relative bioavailability of cannabidiol was 2.3 times higher (Hermush et al., Journal of Cannabis Research, 2025). Two caveats need to be stated immediately: the study was funded by Capsoil Technologies, which produces the tested preparation, and its president is a co-author of the work; the preparation also contained 8 mg of THC and 8 mg of cannabidiol in powder form, not a hemp drink from the shelf. This is an indication that emulsification makes a difference, not a measurement made on a shot.

Why is the word “CBD” missing from the bottle?

If you compare older and newer packaging of the same brand, you will notice a change in nomenclature: instead of the abbreviation CBD, you see “hemp seed oil” or “phytocomponents.” This is not a marketing move, but a consequence of EU regulations on novel foods.

On February 20, 2026, the European Commission issued an implementing decision closing the authorization procedure for cannabidiol (NF/2020/2122) without including it in the EU list of novel foods, and on March 13, 2026, closed the same way the procedures for synthetic cannabidiol, cannabidiol tinctures, and cannabidiol oil (European Commission, decisions closing the procedure). The decisions do not prohibit hemp products, but close the path that manufacturers wanted to legalize cannabidiol as a food ingredient. The Polish sanitary notification does not change this status. Therefore, drinks on the Polish market are described by hemp seed oil, which has a documented history of consumption in Europe.

The second layer is national law. Industrial hemp is defined by Article 4 point 5 of the Act of July 29, 2005 on Counteracting Drug Addiction (Journal of Laws 2023, item 1939), as amended by the Act of March 24, 2022 (Journal of Laws 2022, item 763). The provision states that the sum of delta-9-THC and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid in the flowering or fruiting tops of the plants must not exceed 0.3% when calculated on dry mass, rounded to one decimal place. This distinction has practical significance, as the result of a laboratory test counts from the sum, not from delta-9-THC alone.

The value of 0.3% has been in effect in Poland since May 7, 2022, replacing the previous 0.20%. It corresponds to the EU threshold from Article 4 paragraph 4 of Regulation (EU) 2021/2115, applied since January 1, 2023, but does not derive from it: these are two separate regulations with the same numerical value.

What does the safety assessment say about cannabidiol?

Comparing formats makes sense only when what institutions say about the substance itself stands next to it. The European Food Safety Authority updated its position on cannabidiol as a novel food in 2026, and it is more cautious than the tone of most guides suggests.

The panel derived a provisional safe dose using the benchmark dose method at a level of 0.0275 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, which is about 2 mg daily for a person weighing 70 kg, using an uncertainty factor of 400 (EFSA, EFSA Journal, 2026). This value applies only to supplements with a purity of cannabidiol of at least 98%, without nanoparticles. It is not a recommendation, just a ceiling.

In the same position, the panel states that the safety of cannabidiol cannot be established for people under 25 years of age, for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and for people taking medications simultaneously. In animal studies, consistent liver toxicity has been noted, and in humans, a potential hepatotoxicity, especially with simultaneous use of medications. If you belong to any of these groups, the choice between a drink and oil is secondary to a conversation with a doctor.

What mistakes are repeated when buying shots?

Three mistakes recur often enough that it is worth mentioning them directly before you click on the cart.

• Comparing by the price of the bottle alone. As long as you do not know the declared content, the price only speaks about volume and brand.
• Confusing formats within the same brand. Under the same trade name, both drinks and oils and capsules are on the shelf, and the name of the flavor does not determine what you will find in the package.
• Combining with alcohol. Both substances act on the central nervous system, and with simultaneous use, it is difficult to separate what is responsible for the feeling.

The fourth mistake is less obvious: buying an evening variant marked as Energy or a morning one with melatonin. It happens that someone drinks a stimulating drink in the evening and blames hemp for sleep problems, although the functional additive listed on the label is responsible for them.

A separate issue is medications. What EFSA’s position from 2026 says about their combination with cannabidiol has been described above in the safety assessment section; if you take medications regularly, make the decision about a hemp product with a doctor, not based on the description on the bottle.
