Green shots with CBD oil – morning boost

Green shots with CBD oil – a morning boost. Step-by-step recipe with CBD dosing, nutritional values, and variations. Quick green shot with CBD ready in 5 minutes.

A green shot is one of the most effective ways to quickly deliver vitamins, chlorophyll, and active ingredients on an empty stomach in the morning. In 60–80 ml, you concentrate what you would have in a glass of smoothie – and drink it in 3 seconds. Adding CBD oil to the green shot enhances the effect of the morning ritual: the shot provides enzymes and chlorophyll from fresh vegetables, while CBD offers adaptogenic effects that help you enter a state of focus without the cortisol-induced stimulation of coffee. In this recipe, I will show you how to make a green shot with CBD in 5 minutes without a juicer, how to calculate the CBD dose per shot, and how to modify the ingredients according to your needs.

KEY INFORMATION
• With 5% CBD oil, one drop is about 2.5–3 mg of CBD – for a green shot, typically 3–5 drops (about 9–15 mg of CBD per serving).
• The bioavailability of CBD consumed with fat is about 3× higher than without a carrier (Huestis MA, PMC5009397, 2016) – a green shot is low in fat, so CBD is absorbed less effectively than in milk.
• Do not exceed 70 mg of CBD daily from all sources – a general guideline for adults.
• CBD degrades above 160°C – safe for cold shots. Add the oil after blending, not during blending with warm ingredients.

Why is a green shot a good base for CBD in the morning?

Green shots work through concentration – a small volume (60–80 ml) is a concentrated dose of vitamins C, K, chlorophyll, digestive enzymes, and minerals from fresh vegetables. Spinach provides iron and folate, cucumber – electrolytes and water, ginger – bioactive compounds supporting digestion, lemon – vitamin C and flavonoids. It is a nutrient-dense drink in a small volume.

CBD added to the shot works through a different channel. Huestis (PMC5009397, 2016) showed that the bioavailability of CBD with fat is about 3× higher than without a lipid carrier. The green shot is practically fat-free – the bioavailability of CBD here is lower than in hemp milk or truffles. However, the effect is faster: CBD on an empty stomach is absorbed in 30–60 minutes instead of 60–120 minutes after a fatty meal. The compromise: faster onset, slightly less effective overall absorption.

We noticed in tests that fresh ginger effectively masks the earthy aftertaste of 5% CBD oil in the green shot. In a shot without ginger, the taste of hemp oil is pronounced and may be unpleasant for those unfamiliar with CBD. A teaspoon of ginger juice (fresh ginger grated and squeezed) or 1 cm of fresh ginger blended with the rest of the ingredients almost completely neutralizes it.

CBD dosing in a green shot

5% CBD oil (e.g., Hempmont Classic 12 ml, 600 mg CBD) contains about 50 mg of CBD in 1 ml, and 1 ml is about 20 drops – so one drop = about 2.5–3 mg of CBD.

For a green shot (60–80 ml), the standard serving is 3–5 drops of 5% CBD oil, which gives about 9–15 mg of CBD per shot. For those starting with CBD: 3 drops (about 9 mg of CBD) is a safe start. Experienced users may use 5 drops (about 15 mg). Do not exceed 70 mg of CBD daily from all sources combined.

Add CBD oil directly to the shot in the glass – after blending and pouring. Do not blend CBD with the other ingredients – the blender may heat the liquid through friction, and higher temperatures gradually degrade cannabidiol. Stir the shot with a spoon for 5 seconds and drink it immediately.

Ingredients for the green shot with CBD

Ingredients for 2 shots (about 60–80 ml each):

  • 1 handful of fresh spinach (about 30 g) or kale
  • half a cucumber (approx. 100 g), peeled or with skin
  • juice from half a lemon or lime
  • 1 cm of fresh ginger or a pinch of ground ginger
  • 60–80 ml of cold water or coconut water
  • optional: a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup
  • optional: a quarter of a Granny Smith apple (for sweetness)
  • 3–5 drops of 5% CBD oil per shot – added after blending

How to prepare green CBD shots – step by step?

Preparation time: approx. 5 minutes. Effect: 2 intense shots in the morning.

Step 1. Prepare the vegetables. Wash the spinach, cucumber, and ginger. Cut the cucumber into thick pieces. You can peel the ginger or blend it with the skin – the skin of ginger is edible and aromatic. Squeeze the juice from half a lemon into a glass.

Step 2. Blend everything together. Put the spinach, cucumber, and ginger into the blender. Pour in 60–80 ml of cold water. Blend on high speed for 60 seconds. The shot should be light green, uniform, and thick. Optional: pour fresh lemon juice into the blender.

Step 3. Strain or pour directly. For a smoother shot, strain through a fine sieve into a bowl. For a fiber version – pour directly into shot glasses. A juicer gives a clearer, more intense shot without pulp, but a blender is faster and simpler.

Step 4. Sweeten and acidify. Add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup if the shot is too bitter. Add the lemon juice now if it didn't go into the blender. The shot should be distinctly intense – not polite like a smoothie.

Step 5. Add CBD and drink immediately. Pour the shot into 2 shot glasses or small bottles. Add 3–5 drops of 5% CBD oil to each, stir with a teaspoon for 5 seconds. Drink immediately – chlorophyll and CBD oxidize after a few minutes in the air. Do not store prepared CBD shots.

Variations of the green CBD shot

Version with wheatgrass or spirulina. Add a quarter teaspoon of wheatgrass powder or spirulina to a blender along with the remaining ingredients. It will produce an intense green color and additional chlorophyll. The flavor will become more "marine"—spirulina has a distinctive aroma that masks the ginger well.

Version with hemp oil as a carrier for CBD. Instead of CBD oil, add a teaspoon of cold-pressed hemp oil (for omega acids) and CBD oil separately. The fat in hemp oil increases the bioavailability of CBD – even in the green shot. The oily shot has a creamy consistency and a slightly different taste, but better CBD bioavailability.

Winter version with beetroot and CBD. Replace half of the spinach with raw beetroot (approx. 30 g). The shot changes color to deep red-green. Beetroot provides nitrate which supports muscle oxygenation – a popular addition among athletes. CBD + beetroot + ginger is an unexpected combination that works particularly well as a pre-workout shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much CBD should be added to the green shot?

With 5% CBD oil, one drop contains about 2.5–3 mg of CBD. For a shot, typically 3–5 drops (about 9–15 mg of CBD). The bioavailability of CBD is higher in the presence of fat – in a fat-free shot, it is lower than in milk according to Huestis (PMC5009397, 2016). Do not exceed 70 mg of CBD daily from all sources.

Can a green shot with CBD be made without a juicer?

Yes – a high-speed blender is perfectly sufficient. Blended vegetables with water create a thick shot with fiber. Strained through cheesecloth, it is smoother. A juicer provides a clearer result, but a blender is a simpler tool for everyday use.

When is the best time to drink a green shot with CBD?

In the morning, 15–30 minutes before breakfast or right after waking up. CBD on an empty stomach is absorbed faster (30–60 min) than after a fatty meal (60–120 min), but less effectively. The compromise: shot in the morning, breakfast with fat 15 minutes later. Avoid CBD shots in the evening if you plan to have an intense workout.

What can be added to a green shot to improve its taste?

Fresh ginger (1–2 cm) masks the earthy taste of spinach and CBD. Lime or lemon juice balances the flavor. A teaspoon of honey softens the acidity. A quarter of a Granny Smith apple adds natural sweetness. Coconut water instead of regular water adds a light sweetness and electrolytes.
