Participants received compressed, dried mushrooms in tablets, and yet their results in cognitive function tests improved over sixteen weeks. This one piece of information overturns most store descriptions of coffee with mushrooms, which convince that only extract provides any benefits. Functional coffee is a blend of ground or instant coffee with mushrooms considered supportive: lion’s mane, cordyceps, chaga, or reishi. Most often, lion’s mane, cordyceps, chaga, and reishi are included, either individually or in a blend. It differs from black coffee not in the mechanism of action, but in composition: alongside caffeine, mushroom polysaccharides and compounds that do not occur in coffee at all appear.
The proportions can vary greatly, and this is a practical problem of this category. The manufacturer is not obliged to disclose how much mushroom is actually contained in a serving, and terms like “mushroom blend” do not say anything about it. Two products with identical descriptions on the front of the packaging can differ in raw material content several times, and the price does not reveal this.
The taste is less surprising than the name suggests. Coffee dominates, and the mushroom adds an earthy depth, with chaga having a slightly smoky note. This is not a mushroom drink with a bit of coffee, but coffee with an addition, and most people describe it as milder than espresso itself. If you expect the taste of mushroom soup, you will be pleasantly surprised.
It is worth setting expectations right away. We did not find any published clinical study that tested a ready-made coffee and mushroom blend as a product. Everything we know comes from trials on individual mushrooms given separately, usually in amounts that a typical serving of functional coffee does not contain.
Which mushrooms are included in functional coffee and what is known about them?
Four species dominate in recipes, but the evidence behind them varies drastically in quality. Only lion’s mane and cordyceps have studies involving humans. Reishi and chaga are mainly based on laboratory work, in cell cultures, which is a completely different level of certainty.

One caveat from the chaga study deserves a separate mention, as it rarely appears in product descriptions. The authors conclude with a note that in chaga hub, there is little of Inonotus obliquus itself, so without further purification of the raw material, quantitative conclusions cannot be drawn. In other words: “chaga” on the label is not a declaration of the content of active substances.
Does coffee with mushrooms have less caffeine?
Usually yes, but not because of the mushrooms. Caffeine comes solely from coffee, so if part of the mass of the serving is occupied by mushrooms, there is proportionally less caffeine. The scale of this difference depends on the recipe and cannot be guessed from the product name or category. The answer is provided only by the manufacturer’s declaration.
Specific numbers circulating in store descriptions, such as “half the caffeine”, should be treated as a marketing claim until backed by a value on the packaging. We did not find any publications measuring the caffeine content in market functional coffees, so providing ranges here would be guesswork.
As for caffeine itself, a lot is known. The review by Einöther and Giesbrecht (Psychopharmacology, 2013), which included double-blind and placebo studies, states that caffeine improves performance in both simple and complex attention tasks and affects the alertness and executive control network. This same work notes two things that guides do not mention: evidence for a dose-dependent effect is ambiguous, and improvements cannot be reduced to merely reversing withdrawal symptoms.
The practical conclusion is therefore the opposite of intuition. If you are looking for less stimulation, functional coffee may help, but the mechanism is simply less coffee in the cup. What exactly did the lion’s mane study show?
Mori and colleagues conducted a double-blind trial with parallel groups and placebo. It involved 30 Japanese men and women aged 50-80 with a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, divided into two groups of fifteen. The assessment was based on a scale built on the revised Hasegawa dementia scale.
The active group took four tablets of 250 mg three times a day for 16 weeks. The tablets contained 96% dried lion’s mane powder, not extract. At weeks 8, 12, and 16, cognitive scale results were significantly higher than in the placebo group and increased with the duration of intake. Four weeks after the end of supplementation, they significantly dropped. Laboratory tests did not show any adverse effects.
From this description, three conclusions flow that you will not find in advertisements. First: the study involved people with diagnosed cognitive impairments, not healthy thirty-year-olds looking for focus at work. Second: the dried mushroom worked, so the argument that raw powder is worthless is not confirmed here. Third: the effect disappeared after discontinuation, meaning it is not about a permanent change, but a state maintained by regular intake.

How to prepare coffee with mushrooms at home?
The simplest way is to add powdered mushroom or extract to already brewed coffee and stir for several seconds. Brew espresso or drip coffee as usual, add the raw material to the hot drink, and then, if you want, add plant-based milk. Oat milk works best here, as its sweetness softens the earthy note of the mushroom.
Homemade mixing has one advantage over a ready-made product: you know how much of each ingredient you are adding, and you can check it on a scale. In a ready-made sachet, the mushroom content is what the manufacturer declared, and nothing more.
We will not provide a portion to measure, as there is no basis for it in studies on functional coffee. For orientation: participants in the Mori study took three grams of tablets daily, 96% of which were dried lion’s mane, for 16 weeks in three portions. This describes a research protocol conducted under supervision, not a recommendation for the reader. How much makes sense in your case should be determined with your doctor or dietitian, especially if you are on permanent medication.
A few practical details. Mushroom powder dissolves worse than water extract and tends to settle at the bottom, so stir longer than instinct suggests. A pinch of cinnamon or cocoa masks the earthiness more effectively than sugar. Hot water does not destroy mushroom polysaccharides, so brewing is not a problem.
What to look for on the label of functional coffee?
Three pieces of information determine whether the product is anything more than coffee with a nice description. First, whether the mass of mushroom raw material per serving is even stated. If the label only says “with lion’s mane extract”, you do not know if it is one gram or tenths of a gram.
Second, what the raw material is made from. Fruit body and mycelium grown on a grain substrate are not the same, and the second option brings with it starch from the substrate. Manufacturers who use fruiting bodies usually highlight this, as the raw material is more expensive.
Third, whether the content of beta-glucans is stated separately or only the total percentage of polysaccharides. This distinction has practical significance, as the number “polysaccharides” also includes starch from the growth substrate. The declaration of beta-glucans is narrower and harder to inflate.
We do not provide percentage thresholds here, as we have not found a source that could be verified. The numbers circulating on the internet appear to be an accepted industry convention rather than a result of research. Do mushrooms change the cortisol side of caffeine?
Caffeine does indeed raise cortisol, but the picture is more interesting than a simple “coffee stresses you out”. In the study by Lovallo and colleagues (Psychosomatic Medicine, 2005), 48 men and 48 women underwent a four-week crossover trial with double-blind conditions. After five days without caffeine in the diet, the control dose caused a significant increase in cortisol during the day.
The most interesting thing is what happened to people who drank caffeine daily. After five days of taking 300 or 600 mg daily, the cortisol response to the morning dose completely disappeared, although after the afternoon dose, cortisol rose again. In the evening, it returned to the control level. The authors summarize this in one sentence: in people who drink caffeine daily, the response is weakened but not abolished.
The popular claim that several cups a day raise morning cortisol by several percent is therefore not only unsubstantiated but also runs counter to this work precisely in the morning. Regular consumption changes the picture, not just intensifies it.
Do mushrooms change anything here? We do not know. We did not find any study comparing functional coffee with regular coffee in terms of cortisol response. The argument that reishi acts adaptogenically, so it should suppress this response, is mechanistic reasoning, not a result of measurement. If morning cortisol is your real problem, the verifiable variable remains the amount of coffee consumed.
For whom does coffee with mushrooms make sense, and for whom does it not?
It makes sense for people who already drink coffee and want to regularly provide themselves with mushroom raw material without buying it separately. It makes sense for those who want to reduce their coffee intake without giving up the ritual. It also makes sense if you simply enjoy the taste, which is as good a reason as any other.
It does not make sense as a way to achieve quick effects. In the lion’s mane study, significant differences compared to placebo were reported from the eighth week of daily intake, and that was with three grams of the preparation daily. A serving of functional coffee usually contains significantly less raw material, so expecting a change after a week has no basis in data.
It also does not make sense as a source of specific health effects described on the packaging. Evidence pertains to individual mushrooms in specific amounts and specific groups, not a blend in a cup. This is the difference between “this ingredient has been studied” and “this product works”.
Separately, the issue of safety. In the Mori study, laboratory tests did not show any adverse effects, but this concerned thirty people over sixteen weeks, so it is a narrow observation.
