Which rolling papers to choose: sizes, materials and ranking (Purize and others)

The rolling paper seems to be the least important element of the roll, but a study from Tobacco Control shows otherwise. The porosity of the paper and the presence of a filter significantly change the efficiency of the smoke, and the tar in hand-rolled cigarettes by 26 participants in the study ranged from 9.9 to 21.0 mg per piece (Darrall and Figgins, Tobacco Control, 1998). The more than double variation comes from the things you choose yourself. In this text, we check what sizes and materials of rolling papers are actually on the shelf at Bucha’s store, how much a single paper costs from each pack, and how to match a filter to it. All prices and dimensions come from product cards in the store, as of August 8, 2026.

What sizes of rolling papers can you find for sale and how do they differ?

There are two formats available: King Size and King Size Slim. Product cards state 109 by 44 mm for the Slim version and 110 by 52 mm for the wide Purize King Size version. The difference is therefore in width, not length. There are no shorter 1¼ and Single Wide formats in this offer at all.

Width determines how much material you can fit and how tightly you need to roll. The Slim version gives a slimmer roll and uses less paper for the same length. The wide King Size holds more and forgives more mistakes when rolling, as the margin for the glue flap is simply larger.

Why is there no 1¼ format? It is a derivative of what is sold together with filters. King Size Slim papers are designed for filters with a diameter of about 6 mm, and all filters in this store are exactly 6 mm or 5.9 mm. The shorter 1¼ paper usually goes with a narrower cardboard tip, which you will not find here.

We noticed while compiling this list that the name of the format can be misleading. The brown Purize King Size papers are 110 by 52 mm, which is 8 mm wider than the rest of the offer, although the name does not contain either Slim or Wide. Which material of rolling papers to choose: cellulose, hemp or rice?

You are realistically choosing between two materials. Eight items are unbleached paper made from plant fibers with a strip of organic Arabic gum, and one is hemp paper. The store does not carry rice papers. The declared weights fall within a narrow range from 13.8 to 14 g per square meter.

Unbleached paper has a natural brown color because it has not been bleached. Mascotte declares wood chips as the raw material and no bleaching, while Purize declares natural plant fibers and unbleached brown. The difference compared to snow-white paper is visible to the naked eye, and manufacturers describe it as the absence of chlorine in the process.

Hemp paper is represented in this offer by one item: Babcia Marysia King Size Slim papers, sold with a tray and filters. The manufacturer describes them as thin hemp paper without artificial dyes and flavors. This is the only way to stick with hemp fiber without changing stores.

We noticed a discrepancy in the product cards that is worth knowing before purchasing. The number 10 g per square meter circulates on forums as the weight of Purize, while descriptions of Purize Inside Out King Size Slim and Purize Pink KS Slim state 14 g, and Mascotte Magnetic Brown Slim 13.8 g. The differences between these papers are therefore much smaller than marketing thinness suggests, and the choice of material is more important than the pursuit of the lowest weight. How did we evaluate these rolling papers?

The evaluation is based solely on what can be checked in the product card and price list: on the material, on the declared weight, on the dimensions, and on the cost of one piece. We do not score the uniformity of burning, as we do not have comparable measurements for all nine items, and giving scores without measurement would be guessing.

The weight of 25% for the completeness of data may seem strange in a product ranking, but in this category, it is a real purchasing problem. Four out of nine descriptions do not allow you to calculate the price per piece, so you are buying blind and cannot compare the offer with a competing pack.

We score the contents of the set the lowest because added filters and trays can be a one-time addition, not a reason to stick with a given pack permanently. Material wins in weight because it is the only one of the four criteria that does not change between batches of goods or with price changes.

Which rolling papers performed best in this ranking?

The first place goes to the Purize 420 King Size Slim pack, because with 420 pieces for 42 PLN, the cost of one rolling paper drops to 0.10 PLN, which is about 40% below the rest of the group. After that, material and what you get in the package besides the paper decide.

The Rainbow and Pink variants rank lower than the Brown version solely because they are color variants of the same price and content. Mascotte and Babcia Marysia surpass them because they include filters in the pack, and in the latter case, also a tray. How much does one rolling paper cost and is a large pack worth it?

The cost of one rolling paper in this offer ranges from 0.10 to 0.17 PLN, meaning the range reaches 70%. Small packs of 32 and 42 pieces are practically indistinguishable in price, and the advantage only comes from bulk packaging. We calculate the ratio as the price of the pack divided by the number of pieces from the description.

Switching from a 42-piece pack to a 420-piece package lowers the cost of one rolling paper from 0.17 to 0.10 PLN, but requires an initial outlay of 42 PLN instead of 7 PLN. With a consumption of about one pack per month, the supply will last for over a year, and paper kept in a dry place does not lose its properties.

Four items cannot be added to this chart because their descriptions do not provide the number of pieces in the pack or provide a number inconsistent with the price. The descriptions of Purize King Size brown and Purize Inside Out describe a bulk package of 40 packs, and the price is 6 PLN and 7 PLN, which is the same as a single pack. Before purchasing these two items, ask about the contents of the package.

What filter to choose for the rolling paper?

For the King Size Slim format, filters with a diameter of 6 mm fit, and that is exactly what four out of five items in the filters category have. All are Purize XTRA Slim with activated coconut charcoal and ceramic caps on both sides. The cost of one filter ranges from 0.70 to 1.06 PLN.

Does the filter change anything? A study from Tobacco Control lists the presence of a filter alongside the mass of tobacco and the porosity of the paper as a parameter that shifts the efficiency of the smoke in hand rolls (Darrall and Figgins, 1998). A review of the structural features of cigarettes adds a caveat: lower machine measurements can go hand in hand with more intense inhalation, which cancels out this difference (Talhout et al., 2018). The filter improves comfort and keeps the material away from the mouth, but does not make smoking safe.

How to store rolling papers so they don’t crumble?

Rolling papers absorb moisture from the environment just as eagerly as the herb. Too dry paper cracks when rolling, and too moist paper sticks together in the pack and tears when pulled out. The simplest way is to keep the pack in the same airtight container as the material, so both share the same level of humidity. Paper reacts to fluctuations faster than the herb because it is thinner and has a larger surface area relative to its mass.

In the storage category, you will find a humidity regulator with a declared level of 62% in an 8 g sachet for 4.50 PLN and odorless glass containers with a hygrometer in capacities from 100 to 2000 ml. The sachet is the cheapest element of the entire set and usually determines whether a pack of rolling papers will last until the end in usable condition. One lasts for several weeks in a closed container, and its replacement costs less than one pack of rolling papers.

Do not keep rolling papers in your pocket or loose in your backpack. Mechanical creases destroy the glue strip faster than moisture, and without effective glue, the pack becomes useless regardless of the weight of the paper. Packaging with magnetic closures, like Mascotte’s, handles this better than ordinary cardboard boxes.
