Wake and bake in Polish: morning ritual with CBD instead of THC (FAQ)

Morning ritual with CBD instead of THC: what studies say about absorption on an empty stomach, the time of administration, and drug testing.

Wake and bake is a slang term from marijuana culture: reaching for cannabis right after waking up, as the first activity of the day. In the Polish version of this idea, CBD takes the place of THC, and a joint is replaced by oil or infusion. The change is not cosmetic, as it alters the legal status of the entire situation and what can be expected from it. The problem is that around morning CBD, a layer of numbers has grown that no study confirms. Some of them sound so specific precisely because no one has ever checked them. This article shows what has actually been measured about morning CBD, where knowledge ends and speculation begins, and where popular assurances diverge from the legal state.

KEY INFORMATION
• In a survey of 387 CBD users, the most common reasons for using it were experienced anxiety (42.6 percent) and sleep problems (42.5 percent), and 72.6 percent used it sublingually (Moltke and Hindocha, Journal of Cannabis Research, 2021).
• No study has compared the effectiveness of CBD taken in the morning with the effectiveness of the same dose taken in the evening.
• A fatty meal radically changes the absorption of ingested CBD, so the time of day mainly determines the effect based on what you eat.
• Pure CBD does not give a positive result on drug tests, but a product containing THC may.
• The national threshold for hemp is 0.3 percent and is calculated as the sum of delta-9-THC and THCA.

What does wake and bake mean and what changes in the CBD version?

Wake and bake describes a ritual, not a dose: reaching for cannabis immediately after waking up, before breakfast and before work. In the THC version, this means starting the day in an intoxicated state, which is illegal in Poland, and punishable behind the wheel regardless of how one feels. The CBD version removes both of these problems, as cannabidiol does not have intoxicating effects.

Replacing one substance with another also changes the meaning of the ritual itself. THC gives an effect felt within minutes, and it is the point of this habit. CBD does not provide such an effect, so morning CBD is closer to a morning vitamin than a joint.

How people actually use CBD is mainly known from surveys. In the study by Moltke and Hindocha, 387 current or former users responded, mostly from the UK. The most frequently cited reasons were experienced anxiety (42.6 percent), sleep problems (42.5 percent), and stress and general well-being (37 percent each). More than half of the respondents, 54 percent, took less than 50 mg per day, and 72.6 percent did so sublingually. The authors themselves note that this is an online survey, not a measurement of effectiveness, and that the impact of such small doses on anxiety or sleep still needs to be studied.

Does CBD in the morning make sense, or is it better in the evening?

The honest answer is: no one has checked this. There is no study that would give the same dose of CBD to one group in the morning and to another in the evening and compared the results. Most clinical trials did not control the time of administration at all, so everything you read about the optimal hour is inference from mechanisms, not a determination.

However, there is a finding that complicates these considerations more than is usually admitted. Linares and colleagues (Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria, 2019) gave 57 healthy men a single dose of CBD in three different sizes or a placebo, and then subjected them to a simulated public speaking test. Only the middle dose, 300 mg, reduced anxiety. Neither 150 mg nor 600 mg differed from the placebo. The response curve thus has the shape of an inverted U: more does not mean stronger, and less does not mean milder.

This has direct implications for the morning ritual. The doses that worked in this study are two orders of magnitude larger than the value that EFSA considered temporarily safe for regular use in a supplement. In other words: the dose at which an anxiolytic effect has been documented and the dose that is actually taken in daily routine are two different things, and conclusions from one should not be transferred to the other.

How much CBD is absorbed in the morning on an empty stomach?

Significantly less than after a fatty meal, and this is the best-documented fact in this entire topic. CBD poorly dissolves in water but well in fats, so the presence of fat in the digestive tract determines how much of the substance actually enters the blood.

The team of Birnbaum (Epilepsia, 2019) measured this directly in eight adults with drug-resistant epilepsy who were taking CBD for seizures. Each participant received the same single dose twice: once on an empty stomach and once after a high-fat meal of 840-860 calories. Blood was drawn for three days after administration. After the meal, the maximum concentration in plasma was on average fourteen times higher, and the total exposure to the drug was four times higher than on an empty stomach.

A systematic review by Silmore and colleagues (Pharmacotherapy, 2021) gathered 44 datasets from clinical studies and confirmed this direction, adding a practically more important observation: administration after a meal not only resulted in higher concentrations but also smaller differences between individuals. The effect on an empty stomach is therefore not only weaker but also less predictable. The authors point to sesame oil as a carrier responsible for part of this variability, meaning that the form of the preparation is comparably significant to the meal.

Study Who and how many What was compared Result
Birnbaum et al., 2019, Epilepsia 8 adults with drug-resistant epilepsy The same dose on an empty stomach and after a meal of 840-860 kcal Maximum concentration 14 times higher, total exposure 4 times higher after a meal
Silmore et al., 2021, Pharmacotherapy Review of 44 clinical data sets Administration on an empty stomach and after a meal Higher bioavailability and less interindividual variability after a meal
Linares et al., 2019, Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria 57 healthy men Three dose sizes and placebo before a public speaking test Anxiety was reduced only by the middle dose; inverted U curve

The practical conclusion for the morning ritual is therefore the opposite of intuition: taking CBD right after waking up, before eating, is the moment of the worst absorption throughout the day. More about how meals shift the effect is described in our post about whether to take CBD oil before or after eating, and separately we have gathered rules for supplements during intermittent fasting.

What is known about CBD and morning tension?

The data concern anxiety triggered by a specific situation, not morning well-being as such. The most frequently cited work is the study by Bergamaschi (Neuropsychopharmacology, 2011), in which 24 individuals with social phobia, never treated before, received a single dose of CBD or placebo, with twelve people in each group, one and a half hours before a simulated public speaking event. An additional reference group consisted of twelve healthy individuals who underwent the same test without any preparation.

The result was clear: CBD reduced anxiety, discomfort, and cognitive disturbances during the presentation, and on the scale of negative self-assessments, the difference compared to healthy individuals practically disappeared. This is a strong indication, but it concerns a single, highly stressful event in diagnosed individuals, not the daily act of getting up for work.

It must also be stated clearly where the safety limit lies. EFSA in the update of its position from 2026 set a temporary safe intake value at 0.0275 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, or about 2 mg for a person weighing 70 kg, derived by the benchmark dose method with an uncertainty factor of 400. This value applies only to preparations with at least 98 percent purity of CBD and without nanoparticles. Safety cannot be established today for individuals under 25 years of age, for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and for those taking medications simultaneously.

cannabidiol is not listed in Polish controlled substance lists: the regulation of the Minister of Health regarding the list of psychotropic substances, narcotics, and new psychoactive substances does not mention it even once. THC, on the other hand, remains a controlled substance.

This is where the most common mistake is made. The national threshold for hemp is 0.3 percent, not 0.2 percent, and it results from Article 4 point 5 of the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction as amended on May 7, 2022 (Journal of Laws 2022 item 763). It is calculated as the sum of delta-9-THC and THCA, not as delta-9-THC alone, and rounded to one decimal place. This difference is not a formality: it changes the result of a laboratory test of the same sample. The EU threshold currently has the same value, but it is a separate regulation, not the basis of national law.

A separate issue is the drug test. Standard tests do not detect CBD, only THC metabolites, so pure CBD does not change the result. This was verified by the Spindle team (Journal of Analytical Toxicology, 2020) on six healthy individuals: after administering pure CBD, only one urine sample out of 218 exceeded the lowest screening threshold, and none were confirmed by a definitive test. However, when the same participants vaporized dried material with a predominance of CBD, containing a small amount of THC, nine samples tested positive in the screening, and four were confirmed by a definitive test. The assurance that with CBD you do not risk a positive result is therefore true for isolate and untrue for full-spectrum products.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is wake and bake?

It is a slang term from marijuana culture, describing the act of reaching for cannabis right after waking up, as the first activity of the day. In the Polish version, CBD takes the place of THC, which does not have intoxicating effects and is not a controlled substance in Poland. The ritual remains, but its course and effect are completely different.

Is it better to take CBD in the morning or in the evening?

There is no study that compared the same dose taken in the morning and in the evening, and most clinical trials did not control the time of administration at all. Everything you read about the optimal hour is a conclusion from mechanisms, not a result of measurement. Decide on the time of administration together with your doctor or pharmacist.

Does CBD on an empty stomach work weaker?

Yes, and the difference is significant. In Birnbaum’s study, eight adults took the same dose once on an empty stomach and once after a high-fat meal. After the meal, the maximum concentration in plasma was on average fourteen times higher, and the total exposure was four times higher than on an empty stomach.

Does a larger dose of CBD mean a stronger effect?

Not necessarily. In Linares’ study, 57 healthy men received one of three dose sizes or a placebo before a public speaking test. Only the middle dose worked, while the smallest and largest did not differ from the placebo. The response curve has the shape of an inverted U.

Will CBD show up on a drug test?

Pure CBD will not, as tests detect THC metabolites. In the Spindle study, after pure CBD, only one sample out of 218 exceeded the screening threshold, and none were confirmed by a definitive test. After plant material containing THC, four samples were confirmed, so a full-spectrum product poses a real risk here.

How much THC can a legal cannabis product contain?

The national threshold for hemp is 0.3 percent and is calculated as the sum of delta-9-THC and THCA, rounded to one decimal place. This is based on Article 4 point 5 of the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction as amended on May 7, 2022. The value of 0.2 percent is from before that date.

Can CBD be combined with morning coffee?

There are no clinical studies on this combination in humans, so any claims about mutual enhancement or cancellation of effects have no backing today. There is also no data on harmful interactions. If you are taking medications regularly, ask your doctor about CBD itself, regardless of coffee.

The oils available in the store are gathered in the oils category. If you are interested in the other side of the day, we have described separately whether CBD improves sleep quality.
