Kava pepper (Piper methysticum)
The pepper tree (Piper methysticum), known as Kava Kava, was introduced to Europe by the navigator James Cook during his voyage to the Pacific between 1768 and 1771. Cook referred to the plant as "intoxicating pepper," and in 1776 it was identified by the father and son Forester family.
Kava Kava has been a key part of Polynesian culture for centuries, used in religious ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, and childbirth, much like Yerba Mate in South America.
Description of the plant
It is a tall shrub in the pepper family (Piperaceae), reaching up to 6 meters in height. It has green, glossy, heart-shaped leaves, white flowers, and fruit with a single seed. Kava Kava grows primarily in western and southwestern Polynesia and has now spread to New Guinea and Hawaii.
