Where Did the Night Strain Category Come From?
From commerce, not medicine. The night label is a younger version of the sativa and indica pair: sellers assigned evening relaxation to indica and daytime stimulation to sativa, after which the description passed to product cards and patient conversations. The name thus describes the seller’s promise, not a measured feature of the plant.
This is evident in the data we use for profiles. In the budcare.pl database, from which we take profiles, there are 146 descriptions covering 85 strain names. Each description carries a genetic label and a separate label of presumed effect. These two columns almost overlap: of the 41 entries marked as indica, as many as 40 carry the relaxing effect label, and all 19 entries marked as sativa carry the stimulating label. No sativa entry received a relaxing label. Such a distribution is not the result of measurement, but a consequence of the second column being derived from the first. The night label thus replicates itself and appears to be confirmed.
The same mechanics underlie the second half of the pair, which we describe in a separate text about daytime strains. Both labels have one source and one weakness: they were created to shorten the conversation at the point of sale, not to summarize the measurement result. In Polish pharmacies, flower is described by the name of the registration position and the manufacturer, and the time of day is not mentioned at all.
Do Commercial Labels Align with the Chemistry of Samples?
Partially and irregularly.
Some labels hit a specific chemotype more often than would be expected by chance, but never exclusively. The authors call it as it is: naming systems can be detached from the chemical reality of the material being described. The model here is descriptive, it is a cross-section of the market, and does not determine patient feelings in any direction.
For the question about night, this has very practical consequences. Even if someone demonstrated that a specific chemotype does something to sleep, the trade name would still not transfer that knowledge to the pharmacy, as it does not reliably refer to the chemotype. Thus, between the name and the composition stands a sieve with large holes, and no measurement has yet been established between the composition and sleep in humans. The Polish market is not an exception here, although it is much smaller: the registration position carries the manufacturer’s name and declared content, not the chemotype designation, so only what the manufacturer recorded for a specific batch remains verifiable.
What Did the Meta-Analysis Show About Cannabinoids and Sleep?
A moderate improvement in the rating given by the patient themselves, with a very large spread of results and only for preparations with known doses.
Compared to placebo, cannabinoids improved subjective sleep quality by 0.53 standard deviations, and the confidence interval calculated at the 95 percent level ranged from 0.03 to 1.02. Among participants diagnosed with insomnia or poor sleep, the improvement was 0.60 with a range from 0.09 to 1.11. The lower bounds of both ranges lie just above zero, so a positive number here does not indicate a certain or large effect.
Breaking it down by type of preparation says more than the aggregate result. The result was raised by those preparations that contained not only pure cannabidiol: 0.82, with a range from 0.24 to 1.40. Pure cannabidiol did not yield a statistically significant effect, as its result of 0.13 stretched from minus 0.38 to 0.65, thus also encompassing deterioration. The heterogeneity of results between studies reached 88 to 89 percent, meaning that averaging obscures real differences between them.

What Strain Features Matter Here?
Two are measurable: chemotype, or cannabinoid content in a given registration position, and the terpene profile of the batch. Both can be determined in a laboratory and both are sometimes provided by the manufacturer. However, neither has been linked to sleep quality in humans in a study that would measure this relationship directly.
The work from Nature Plants showed that the label indeed correlates with the volatile composition, but co-occurrence is not the same as action. Variability concerned a small group of compounds, and its basis lies in terpene synthase gene clusters. Between this measurement and the patient’s sleep, there is a missing link: no one has checked in a randomized study whether shifting the volatile profile one way or the other changes anything in falling asleep.
We do not provide the percentage shares of individual components of the profile in this service at all, as the denominator can be different in each source. We calculated it on our own copy of the budcare.pl database: of 145 entries with a given profile, only 12 sum to one hundred, 67 do not even reach eighty, six exceed one hundred, and the highest sum reaches 125. A number that sometimes signifies a share of the whole and sometimes a share of what has just been marked is not suitable for comparing strains with each other, let alone inferring about night.
What Does the Doctor Decide, and What Does the Patient?
The doctor decides everything related to treatment: whether cannabis flower is even an option, the choice of registration position, the dose, and the route of administration. The patient is left to accurately describe their own symptoms and a full list of medications taken. The choice of the night label is not a separate therapeutic decision here.
In Poland, cannabis flower falls under the Rpw availability category, meaning it is dispensed to the patient only by prescription, after a personal examination, on a prescription issued in a separate procedure. It is not a supplement or a product that can be selected based on a description on a website. For this reason, you will not find sentences like “for sleep take this strain”: it would be a therapeutic recommendation issued without knowledge of the patient, and with a raw material from this category, also advertising a medicinal product directed to the public.
The conversation with the doctor gains specificity when the patient brings a description of their own sleep: how long it takes to fall asleep, how many times they wake up at night, how their functioning looks the next day. None of these data can be replaced by any trade name. The doctor compares the flower with other treatment options, not one strain with another. What Adverse Effects Have Been Reported with Cannabis Use for This Indication?
None separately, as no studies have been conducted for strains described as night, so there is nothing to collect reports from. The cited meta-analysis on subjective sleep quality reported efficacy, not safety, and it is impossible to read from it the frequency of a single symptom with a specific flower.
Reports of adverse effects are collected for medicinal products with a batch number, not for strain names, so the following pertains to cannabis flower as a group of raw materials. The most commonly reported are dry mouth, red eyes, and increased heart rate. Less frequently described are dizziness upon rapid standing, daytime drowsiness, and transient worsening of short-term memory, as well as anxiety increasing with the dose. A separate issue is medications taken concurrently, especially sedatives and those affecting coagulation: their assessment requires knowledge of the entire list of preparations, not just the description of the plant. We do not provide the frequency of these symptoms numerically, as public compilations for cannabis flower in Poland do not separate them by individual products.
The night label does not shift this picture in any direction, as it is not a feature of the raw material, but a sales description. If drowsiness during the day or anxiety occurs after using the flower, this information goes to the attending physician and to the adverse effect report, not to the assessment of the strain name. The name does not have a batch number, so there is no addressee who could do anything with such a report.
What Can Be Verified in the Description of Flower Instead of the Night Label?
The name of the registration position, the manufacturer, and what this manufacturer has declared for a specific batch of flower. These pieces of information have an addressee and a number, so they can be verified at the source. The time of day entered in the trade name has neither an addressee nor a number, and is often the most visible part of the description online.
The composition of the available assortment shifts from month to month, as registration positions appear and disappear along with permits and deliveries. A name that stood in the pharmacy in winter may be unavailable in summer, and later returns under a different manufacturer and with a different declaration. We maintain the current state in a list of strains available in Polish pharmacies, and over-the-counter products, which none of these studies covered, stand in a separate section of the store.

The last row is the crux of the matter: the first three items have an issuer to whom one can appeal, while the fourth has none at all. Anyone organizing their flower by time of day is organizing it according to someone else’s commercial convention, not according to anything that has been marked.
