What do these two strains really differ in?

In leading terpene and lineage, not in the number on the label. In the profile of Island Sweet Skunk, the highest proportion is pinene, while in the profile of Cataract Kush, it is myrcene. The lineage of the first strain is unknown, while the second comes from a cross of LA Confidential with OG Kush. The declared THC content for both falls within the same range.

Pinene is rarely dominant. Among 85 cultivars collected in this cluster, it tops the profile in six, while myrcene leads in twenty, and caryophyllene in thirty. In fifteen comparisons of this batch, pinene comes into play twice and each time on the side of Island Sweet Skunk; Cataract Kush appears in four pairs, always as the myrcene side. This asymmetry says nothing about effects. It does indicate, however, how much comparative material exists: the myrcene strain is easy to compare with a neighbor from the same shelf, while the pinene strain is much harder.

The second difference lies in the origin. Cataract Kush has a named breeder and two parents: LA Confidential and OG Kush, as described by the SeedFinder strain database. For Island Sweet Skunk, there is nothing to record: public breeder databases provide at least three conflicting versions of its origin, so in this comparison, its lineage is listed as unknown. This is a result, not a gap to be filled with speculation.

On the number from the label, this pair does not diverge. Both strains are available in Polish pharmacies under several separate registration entries, and the declared THC content ranges for each from 16.2 to 24.2%. This wide range is not the tolerance of a single producer: it consists of declarations from different entries, each of which has its own ten percent tolerance around the value listed in the trade name. Those who compare these two strains by content are thus comparing the registry, not the plants.

What connects them?

Producers, power range, and five terpenes present in both profiles. They are also connected by something less obvious: both lineage paths end with the word unknown, only that for Island Sweet Skunk it is immediate, while for Cataract Kush it is only one generation higher, at OG Kush, whose parents have not been established.

Both profiles repeat five components: humulene, caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene, and pinene. They only diverge at the edges. The profile of Island Sweet Skunk additionally carries bisabolol, nerolidol, ocimene, and terpinolene, while the profile of Cataract Kush adds linalool, which is not mentioned by any source for the former. The order is also different: what is at the top of one strain’s list may be a footnote at the end of the other.

On the pharmacy side, both come from the same three producers: S-LAB, Synoptis Pharma, and Tilray. In the list of entries collected for this cluster, Island Sweet Skunk has five entries, Cataract Kush four, with a median of one entry per cultivar. For this market, both are thus widely available, which for comparison means something opposite to what it seems: the more entries, the more separate declarations that may differ from each other.

Neither has any siblings, and in both cases, this is due to something other than a lack of data. LA Confidential appears in these 85 lineages exactly once, just with Cataract Kush, and OG Kush is a broad family of style, not a single identified strain, so four cultivars having it as a parent cannot be called siblings. Are the terpene profiles of these two strains confirmed?

Neither is, but for completely different reasons. The composition of Island Sweet Skunk is described by two sources and they differ from each other, while the composition of Cataract Kush is described by only one source, so there is nothing to compare it with. In one case, there is a lack of agreement, in the other, there is a lack of a second voice.

The discrepancy can be named precisely. Both databases list bisabolol, caryophyllene, nerolidol, pinene, and terpinolene for Island Sweet Skunk, while humulene, limonene, myrcene, and ocimene appear only in one of them. Four out of nine listed positions is not an editorial detail: the image of the strain then depends on which side someone opened first. It also diverges in the genetic label of this strain, sometimes hybrid, sometimes sativa. For Cataract Kush, there is no second record, so its indica has nothing to diverge from.

Hence the prohibition on providing shares in numbers. The database from which the composition comes assigns values to individual entries, but they do not sum to one hundred: for one entry, Island Sweet Skunk comes out at 88, for another entry of the same strain at 67, and for Cataract Kush at 94. Since within a single source and a single strain the sum can drop by twenty-one points, the denominator is unknown, and the fraction assigned to the name of the component would appear to be a measurement, which it is not.

What is known, and what is not known about the effects of both strains?

Nothing is known about the strains themselves. Neither has its own study involving patients. Publications that can be cited honestly concern individual terpenes given to animals or cultured cells, thus describing the molecule, not the dried product released in pharmacies. The table separates this by the sides of the pair.

On the side of Island Sweet Skunk, there are two studies on alpha-pinene, and both end far from the patient. Mouse sleep after oral administration was measured by brain and muscle activity recording (PMID:27573669), and the inhibition of the inflammatory response was described in mouse macrophages in culture (PMID:26119957). The limit of this data is as follows: No anxiolytic or analgesic effect of pinene has been demonstrated in humans; available data concern only the effect on sleep in mice after oral administration and anti-inflammatory action on mouse macrophages in culture.

On the side of Cataract Kush, there are three studies that say things that are hard to reconcile. Intraperitoneal injection prolonged sleep after pentobarbital, while in the elevated plus maze it produced a rather anxiogenic effect (PMID:12587690). A separate study described weaker pain responses in mice and the involvement of alpha2-adrenergic receptors (PMID:1983154). The latest study administered myrcene in vapor, which is closer to how the raw material reaches humans, and observed anxiolytic action only in females (PMID:39728677). In humans, it has not been shown that myrcene alone alleviates insomnia at doses typical for inhalation of dried material. The direction of the effect in rodents depends on the route of administration and sex: after intraperitoneal injection in 2002, a slightly anxiogenic effect was described, while after inhalation in 2024, an anxiolytic effect was observed in females. These two results do not cancel each other out; they show that the conclusion depends on conditions that no popular strain database provides.

How long do the effects last after vaporization, and how long after ingestion?

With vaporization, it counts in minutes, with ingestion in hours, and this difference is greater than anything that separates these two strains. For neither Island Sweet Skunk nor Cataract Kush has anyone measured the course separately, so the description below pertains to the route of administration.

The route of administration determines the course more than the strain itself. After vaporization, the substance passes from the lungs to the blood almost immediately, so the first sensations appear after a few minutes, the intensity increases for another ten to thirty minutes, and the whole effect wears off within two to four hours. After ingestion, the raw material first passes through the intestine and liver, so the first sensations are awaited from half an hour to two hours, and the episode lasts six, sometimes eight hours. Hence the most common mistake with oral administration: those who think that nothing is happening after thirty minutes and take another dose will receive both doses at once. The above ranges describe the route of administration, not the strain; pharmacokinetic studies for a single cultivar have not been published.

Temperature also comes into play from another angle. Public records collected in PubChem provide boiling points along with pressure for six of the eleven terpenes in this cluster, and both leading terpenes of this pair are among them. For alpha-pinene, records at a pressure of 760 mm Hg give 155-156 degrees Celsius, for beta-myrcene 166-167. These are numbers for pure substances in a laboratory vessel: the vaporizer setting does not equal the temperature of the material in the chamber, and the boiling point is not a threshold below which the molecule does not pass into vapor. The rest of these records stand on an axis dedicated to the evaporation of terpenes.

What adverse effects have been reported for each of these two strains?

Separately, nothing has been reported for either, as reports are not collected under the name of the cultivar. The system ties them to the medicinal product and batch number, so comparing Island Sweet Skunk with Cataract Kush in terms of safety has no basis.

The most commonly reported effects are dry mouth, red eyes, and increased heart rate. Less frequently described are dizziness upon rapid standing, daytime drowsiness, and transient worsening of short-term memory, as well as anxiety that increases with dosage. A separate issue is medications taken concurrently, especially sedatives and those affecting coagulation: their assessment requires knowledge of the entire list of preparations, not just the description of the plant. We do not provide the frequency of these symptoms numerically, as public compilations for cannabis flower in Poland do not separate them by individual products.

The number of entries is also not a guideline here. Island Sweet Skunk has one more entry in the registry than Cataract Kush, which translates at most to a greater number of opportunities for reporting, not to greater risk. Those who would compare both strains by the number of reports would measure the popularity of registration entries and the time they have been on the market, not the safety profile of the plant.

Does the common part of the name say anything about kinship?

It says nothing in either direction. There are ten names with the kush suffix in this comparison, and the origin has only been established for half of them. There are two with the skunk suffix, Island Sweet Skunk and Lemon Skunk, and nothing in the pedigree graph of these two strains connects them.

For Cataract Kush, the name reflects something, as OG Kush indeed stands in its lineage. However, this is an exception, not the rule: OG Kush itself has no established parents, so the trail leads one generation up and stops there. The path of Island Sweet Skunk stops immediately, at the first question, and this is exactly how it looks for twenty-five out of 85 cultivars in this cluster.

Lemon Skunk shows how easily one can be mistaken in the other direction. It appears here as a parent of another strain, Frosted Lemon Angel, while Island Sweet Skunk is not a parent of anything we describe in this cluster. The common word in the name thus remains just a word: it describes aroma or breeding tradition, not kinship. This is evident on the list itself: the kush suffix is carried here simultaneously by Blood Orange Kush with recorded parents and Afghan Kush, Hindu Kush, or Master Kush, for which nothing stands in the origin column. A conclusion built solely on the name creates false connections between strains and can transfer the description of one to another.

Who supplies both strains to Polish pharmacies?

The same three producers: S-LAB, Synoptis Pharma, and Tilray. Neither of these two strains depends on a single supplier, which distinguishes them from most of the cluster, as 64 out of 85 cultivars in this list have exactly one producer. Ten strains have three or more producers, and both sides of this pair fall within that ten.

However, the composition of this trio may change from month to month, for reasons that say nothing about the plant: the marketing authorization expires, the producer changes the raw material supplier, or the batch fails quality control. The strain name is not, in fact, what appears on the prescription. The doctor prescribes a registration entry with a specific content, and the strain name may be a note from the producer; the same trade name can return after a supplier change with a different terpene profile. The strain may also be absent for several months and then return in the entry of another producer, so the statement about availability has a shorter shelf life than the statement about composition. The retail category of hemp flower with cannabidiol, sold over the counter, is a completely different shelf and has no common entries with this comparison.
