Apple Cider Vinegar for Hair: Rinse, Mask, and Serum, Does It Really Work

Apple cider vinegar for hair: a review from 2025 found no studies on rinses, and diluted vinegar irritated the skin in 16 out of 22 people. We check what was measured.

Apple cider vinegar rinse has been returning in care guides for years, usually with the same justification: acidic pH is supposed to close the hair cuticles and restore shine. It sounds like chemistry, so it’s hard to argue with it. However, when one starts looking for studies that measured this, it becomes empty. A literature review published in 2025 in the journal Cutis searched for studies on vinegar rinses and described a clear lack of data. The only published study of diluted vinegar on human skin ended with irritation in most participants, even at a concentration that guides describe as completely safe. Below, we separate what has actually been measured from what is repeated without measurement: where the argument about pH came from, what really causes dandruff, and in what situations vinegar on the scalp can be dangerous.

What does acidic pH do to hair?

It changes the electric charge on the fiber surface, not closing the cuticles. The authors of the analysis of 123 shampoos describe that alkaline pH increases the negative charge on the hair surface. This increases friction between fibers, and from friction come cuticle damage and brittleness. Lower pH weakens this effect.

The work of Gavazzoni Dias and colleagues from the International Journal of Trichology (2014) measured the pH of 123 shampoos from international brands. The values ranged from 3.5 to 9.0. About 38 percent of products had a pH of 5.5 or lower, the rest higher. All tested children’s shampoos had a pH above 5.5, as the no-tears formula requires it. The authors declared no funding and no conflict of interest.

However, more importantly, is a statement from the conclusions that never appears in guides: there is no established target pH value, and studies needed to determine the best range for fiber and scalp should still be conducted. The popular statement about the optimal pH of hair around 4 to 5 therefore has no support in this work, even though it is the one most often cited in connection with it.

There is also a difference that is easy to overlook. The analysis pertains to shampoos, not vinegar. No one measured the rinse in it, compared it to a conditioner, or checked how long the effect lasts. Transferring the conclusion from one product to another is an assumption, not a result. Has anyone studied vinegar rinse on hair?

We did not find such a study. In 2025, Ogah and Kindred published a literature review in the journal Cutis dedicated precisely to the method of rinsing with apple cider vinegar. The authors’ conclusion is unequivocal: the literature shows a clear lack of scientific works evaluating this practice, and appropriate studies are still needed.

This review has a limitation worth knowing. It concerned synthetic hair extensions, for which rinsing with vinegar functions as a home method to limit skin reactions and contact with synthetic compounds. This is not a review about hair in general. The direction of the conclusion remains the same, which ends every inquiry we make to literature databases: there are simply no works on vinegar rinses.

Therefore, you will not find here proportions, holding times, or schedules. All such numbers circulating in guides, from a tablespoon per liter to three times a week, do not come from measurement. Providing them alongside assurances of safety would suggest knowledge that no one has gathered.

It is also worth checking the arithmetic of these recipes. In the study by Luu, a solution with a concentration of 0.5 percent acetic acid was created by mixing one part of apple cider vinegar with nine parts of water. Two tablespoons of vinegar dissolved in a liter of water is a dilution over three times further, meaning an acetic acid concentration of around 0.15 percent. Guides describe the same solution as one or two percent. The mistake by an order of magnitude has been repeated for years and shows how little these recipes have in common with measurement.

What is known about apple cider vinegar and dandruff?

We did not find a clinical study. However, it is well known what drives dandruff. Dawson described in 2007 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology Symposium Proceedings that on the scalp with dandruff, Malassezia globosa and Malassezia restricta prevail, not the Malassezia furfur mentioned in guides.

In the same work, the author points out three conditions on which dandruff simultaneously depends: sebum, yeast metabolism, and individual susceptibility. Oleic acid alone can cause flaking resembling dandruff. Malassezia globosa is the most likely initiating organism because it has high lipase activity, and the presence of this lipase has been demonstrated on human scalp.

The claim that vinegar inhibits these yeasts has no source that we could find. The most frequently cited work on the antimicrobial properties of apple cider vinegar (Yagnik et al., Scientific Reports, 2018) studied Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and the yeast Candida albicans. In its full text, the word Malassezia does not appear even once, just as the word dandruff does not. The conclusion about dandruff was therefore appended to a work that says nothing about dandruff.

The practical consequence is simple. Anti-dandruff shampoos have studies with random assignment behind them, while vinegar rinse has none. Piérard-Franchimont and colleagues (Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology, 2002) compared a 2 percent ketoconazole shampoo and a 1 percent zinc pyrithione shampoo in 331 people with severe dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. After four weeks, the severity of symptoms decreased by 73 percent in the ketoconazole group and by 67 percent in the zinc pyrithione group, and adverse effects were minimal. In cases of persistent flaking, redness, or itching of the scalp, a dermatologist decides, not a home experiment.

When does apple cider vinegar harm the scalp?

When it comes into contact with the skin at a concentration that no one has checked on hair. In the only published study of diluted vinegar on human skin, irritation was reported by most participants. Undiluted vinegar has been described in the dermatological literature as a cause of chemical burns, even in a child.

Luu and colleagues (Pediatric Dermatology, 2019) gathered 22 people: eleven with atopic dermatitis and eleven healthy. Each participant soaked one forearm in a solution with a concentration of 0.5 percent acetic acid and the other in water, for ten minutes a day for fourteen days. Transcutaneous water loss increased, and pH dropped immediately after the procedure, but after an hour the effect disappeared. Mild adverse effects were reported by 16 out of 22 people, or 72.7 percent, and subsided after discontinuation. The authors’ conclusion: diluted vinegar does not improve skin barrier integrity, but irritates it in most subjects. The study was conducted in an academic center, and its repetition in 2021 was funded by the University of Virginia, not by a vinegar manufacturer.

Burns from vinegar have been described in at least three independent reports. Korkmaz et al. (Pediatric Dermatology, 2000) presented a chemical burn in a newborn to whom vinegar was applied to the skin to reduce fever. Bunick et al. (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2012) described a burn after the topical application of apple cider vinegar. Feldstein et al. (The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2015) described a burn after using vinegar according to an online guide for self-removing moles.
