Pepper Methysticum (Piper methysticum)

The pepper tree (Piper methysticum), known as Kava Kava, was introduced to Europe by sailor James Cook during his Pacific voyage from 1768 to 1771. Cook referred to this plant as “intoxicating pepper,” and in 1776 it was identified by father and son Foresters.

Kava Kava has been a key part of Polynesian culture for centuries, used in religious ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, and births, similar to Yerba Mate in South America.

Plant Description

It is a tall shrub from the pepper family (Piperaceae), reaching up to 6 meters in height. It has green, glossy heart-shaped leaves, white flowers, and fruits with a single seed. Kava Kava mainly grows in western and southwestern Polynesia and has now spread to New Guinea and Hawaii.
