Hemp Butter – Step-by-Step Recipe with THC or CBD 2026

Hemp butter 2026: decarboxylation at 110°C for 40 min, cooking at 70-90°C for 2-3 hours, ratios 250 g of butter + 20 g of herb. Full step-by-step recipe.

Hemp butter is one of the oldest and most effective methods of cannabinoid extraction. CBD and THC have logP values of about 6.3 and 6.97, making them highly lipophilic compounds that dissolve exceptionally well in milk fats (PMC, Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2020). The fat in the butter binds up to 80% of the cannabinoids available in the herb after proper decarboxylation.

Making your own hemp butter may seem complicated, but it actually requires just three precise steps: decarboxylation at 110°C for 40 minutes, extraction at 70-90°C for 2-3 hours, and straining through cheesecloth. The entire process takes about 4 hours of kitchen work and allows you to control the dosage, quality of the raw material, and the cost of the final product.

In this guide, you will find a complete recipe for hemp butter 2026 based on research from PubMed, Journal of Natural Products, and Project CBD. We discuss temperatures, times, proportions, dosing, storage, and legal aspects. CBD is legal in Poland. THC herb, or medical marijuana, is available only by prescription. We take this difference into account in each section.

KEY INFORMATION
– Decarboxylation at 110°C for 40 minutes converts 95-99% of THCA and CBDA acids into active forms of THC and CBD (Journal of Natural Products, 2016).
– The standard proportion is 250 g of clarified butter + 14-20 g of dried hemp, cooked for 2-3 hours at 70-90°C.
– CBD and THC are lipophilic (logP 6.3-6.97), therefore fat binds as much as 80% of available cannabinoids (PMC, 2020).
– In the refrigerator 2-3 weeks, in the freezer 4-6 months without losing power.
– Start with 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 g), the edibles effect appears after 30-120 minutes, lasts 6-8 hours.
– CBD herb up to 0.3% THC is legal in Poland, THC marijuana only with a doctor’s prescription.

Why is it worth making your own hemp butter?

Homemade hemp butter gives you full control over quality, dosing, and cost. According to the Hemp Industry Daily report from 2024, the global hemp edibles market exceeded $13.4 billion and is growing at a CAGR of 17.9% until 2030 (Hemp Industry Daily, 2024). The price of ready-made edibles is usually 3-5 times higher than the cost of homemade production from a comparable amount of raw material.

What exactly do you gain by making butter yourself? First, you know the exact origin of the herb, the cannabinoid and terpene profile, and any pesticide residues. Reputable Polish CBD herb producers publish full Certificates of Analysis (COA) for each batch. The homemade process also eliminates unnecessary preservatives and sugars present in commercial edibles.

The second key benefit is dosing. Commercial edibles often have standard doses of 5, 10, or 25 mg of CBD per serving. Homemade butter allows you to choose exactly the amount of cannabinoids you need based on the known concentration of the herb. For 250 g of butter with 20 g of 9% CBD herb, you get about 1800 mg of CBD, which is an average of 18 mg of CBD per tablespoon.

How much does homemade hemp butter cost?

Let's calculate specifically. CBD herb Mars 9% priced at 59 PLN for a 5 g package gives a cost of about 11.80 PLN per gram. For a batch of 250 g of butter, you need 14-20 g of herb, which means the cost of the herb is 165-236 PLN. Clarified butter adds another 25-30 PLN. In total, 190-265 PLN for a batch that will yield 50-100 servings of 5-10 mg of CBD.

Compare this with ready-made edibles, where 30 gummies of 10 mg CBD (i.e., 300 mg total) usually cost 80-150 PLN. In terms of milligrams of active CBD, the difference is 2-4 times in favor of homemade production. The higher the potency of the herb (e.g., 12-15% CBD), the better the cost/effect ratio.

Is homemade butter more effective?

Effectiveness mainly depends on the quality of the herb and proper decarboxylation. In a study published in the Journal of Natural Products in 2016, homemade fat-based extractions achieved 70-85% efficiency compared to laboratory extraction with CO2 (Journal of Natural Products, 2016). This is a very good result for a homemade method.

The key is temperature precision. A candy or kitchen thermometer is an investment of 30-50 PLN that significantly improves the repeatability of results. Without a thermometer, you risk overheating and degrading cannabinoids or underheating and incomplete decarboxylation. The first mistake wastes the raw material, while the second results in butter without active compounds.

How does hemp butter work on a chemical level?

The mechanism of action of hemp butter is based on the lipophilicity of cannabinoids and the decarboxylation process. CBD and THC in the raw plant exist as the acids CBDA and THCA, which do not exhibit full pharmacological activity. Only heating above 100°C detaches the carboxyl group and activates the molecules (PubMed, Journal of Natural Products, 2016).

After decarboxylation, active CBD and THC migrate from the plant material to the fat. The lipids in clarified butter (80-82% milk fat) create a hydrophobic environment in which cannabinoids dissolve much better than in water. A logP partition coefficient of about 6.3 means that the concentration of CBD in fat is 2 million times higher than in water.

After consuming hemp butter, cannabinoids pass through the digestive tract and liver. In the liver, THC is partially metabolized to 11-hydroxy-THC, which is 2-3 times more psychoactive than the original THC (PMC, 2018). This is why THC edibles work stronger and longer than smoked cannabis. CBD does not undergo such transformation, so its effect remains stable.

What is decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation is a chemical reaction that removes the -COOH group from the cannabinoid acid molecule. An active cannabinoid plus carbon dioxide is produced. In nature, the process occurs slowly under the influence of time and light. In the kitchen, we accelerate it with temperature.

The reaction for CBD: CBDA + heat → CBD + CO2. The reaction for THC: THCA + heat → THC + CO2. Optimal conditions are 105-115°C for 30-45 minutes. Higher temperatures cause further degradation: CBD converts to CBN, THC to CBN and delta-8-THC, which have weaker effects.

Why fat and not water?

The polarity of the molecule determines solubility. Water is polar, fats are nonpolar. Cannabinoids have long hydrocarbon chains and are nonpolar, which is why they "like" fat. Attempting extraction in water produces an infusion with negligible content of active compounds.

The best carriers for homemade production are: clarified butter (80-82% fat), coconut oil (90-100% fat, including 60% MCT), shea butter, MCT oil. Regular butter contains only 60-65% fat and 35-40% water, so extraction is less efficient. Clarification removes water and proteins, increasing effectiveness.

Cannabinoids are highly lipophilic compounds with a logP coefficient of 6.3-6.97, indicating a two-million-fold preference for dissolving in fats over water (PMC, Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2020). Therefore, extraction in clarified butter (80-82% fat) binds up to 80% of the available cannabinoids after proper decarboxylation.

What is needed to make hemp butter?

The list of ingredients and equipment is short, but every element matters. According to a survey of Polish edibles users in 2024, 67% of failed attempts were due to temperature errors, 21% due to insufficient herb quantity, and 12% due to improper straining (Hemp Facts, 2024). Most mistakes can be avoided with proper preparation.

Ingredients for a batch of 250 g

  • 14-20 g of hemp herb – For CBD, choose 8-15% CBD herb, e.g., Mars CBD 9% or Northwest 5g; for THC, only medical marijuana from a prescription pharmacy
  • 250 g of clarified butter (ghee) – alternatively 250 g of regular butter 82% fat
  • 500 ml of filtered water – optional, for the „water-fat” method with a water bath
  • A pinch of salt – improves the taste of the final product

Equipment

  • Convection oven – must maintain 105-115°C; check accuracy with a separate oven thermometer, as a difference of 10°C is critical
  • Candy or meat thermometer – range 0-200°C, preferably digital with probe
  • Baking tray + baking paper – for decarboxylation
  • Aluminum foil – for hermetically sealing the herb in the oven, reduces the loss of terpenes
  • Thick-bottomed pot 1-2 l – for cooking butter with dried herbs, preferably with a non-stick coating
  • Fine sieve + cotton cheesecloth – 3-4 layers of gauze or a special extraction bag
  • Glass jar with a lid (250-500 ml) – for storage in the refrigerator
  • Wooden spoon and silicone spatula – for mixing without scratching the pot

Where to get CBD herb for cooking?

In Poland, you can legally buy hemp herb Cannabis sativa L. with THC content up to 0.3%. CBD herb 5-12% is suitable for making edibles. Choose producers who publish COA for each batch. This guarantees that the declared CBD concentration corresponds to reality and that there are no pesticide or heavy metal residues.

THC herb (medical marijuana) requires a medical prescription. A list of authorized pharmacies is available on the GIF website. Patients with a prescription can legally make butter from the received herb for personal use. Dosing should be agreed upon with the attending physician.

Decarboxylation step by step – the heart of the process

Decarboxylation is the most important stage. Without it, the butter will not work. In a study published in the Journal of Natural Products in 2016, the optimal conversion of CBDA to CBD was 95-99% at 110°C for 40 minutes, and for THCA to THC, it was 92-98% at 105°C for 45 minutes (PubMed, 2016). Higher temperatures degrade cannabinoids to CBN and other derivatives with weaker effects.

Step 1: grinding the herb

Grind the herb by hand or in a grinder. The particles should be 2-5 mm in size. Grinding it too finely will complicate subsequent straining and may result in a bitter taste. Too coarse a grind will slow down the extraction process. The optimal consistency is "thick coffee." Do not use a blender or food processor, which will grind the herb into a fine powder.

Step 2: spreading on the tray

Line the tray with baking paper. Spread the herb in an even layer about 1 cm thick. Do not allow accumulation in one place, as the center will not heat evenly. Optionally, cover with a second sheet of paper or aluminum foil, which retains terpenes and improves the aromatic profile of the finished butter.

Step 3: preheating the oven

Preheat the oven to 110°C in convection mode or top and bottom heat. Wait at least 10 minutes after reaching the temperature. Check the value with a separate oven thermometer. Built-in thermostats have a tolerance of +/- 10-15°C, which is too large for delicate extraction. A digital thermometer with a probe costs 30-50 PLN and is the best investment in the entire process.

Step 4: baking for 40 minutes

Slide the tray onto the middle rack. Bake for 40 minutes at 110°C for CBD herb. For THC herb, reduce to 105°C for 45 minutes, as THC is more heat-sensitive. Every 10-15 minutes, gently stir the herb to heat it evenly. Do not open the door for longer than 5 seconds, as the temperature drops by 20-30°C.

The herb after decarboxylation should be light to medium brown and have a more intense aroma. If it has turned dark brown or black, the temperature was too high and the cannabinoids have degraded. After removing from the oven, let it cool for 10-15 minutes. The herb should be dry and crumbly, easily crumbling in your fingers.

Step 5: verification by smell and color

Well-decarboxylated herb smells intensely resinous and herbal. If the smell is weak, decarboxylation was incomplete. If you smell burnt caramel or burnt plastic, the cannabinoids have degraded. If in doubt, it’s better to repeat the process with a new batch of herb than to ruin the entire 250 g of butter with inactive raw material.

In a study published in the Journal of Natural Products in 2016, the highest conversion of CBDA to CBD (95-99%) was achieved at a temperature of 110°C maintained for 40 minutes, while temperatures above 130°C caused a decrease in efficiency by 25-40% due to conversion to CBN (Journal of Natural Products, 2016).

How to make hemp butter – step-by-step recipe

After proper decarboxylation, the actual extraction is simple. In a study published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in 2019, cooking the herb with butter at 70-85°C for 2 hours achieved 70-80% transfer of cannabinoids to fat, and extending to 3 hours raised the result to 78-85% (Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, 2019). Longer cooking does not significantly improve the result.

Step 1: melting the butter

In a thick-bottomed pot, melt 250 g of clarified butter over low heat. The temperature should not exceed 90°C. If you are using regular butter, pre-clarify it for 15-20 minutes, skimming the foam from the surface. Clarification removes water and proteins that could burn during longer cooking.

Step 2: adding the herb and water

Add the decarboxylated herb to the melted butter. Optionally, add 250-500 ml of hot water. The method with water prevents burning and facilitates temperature control, as the water acts as a water bath. After cooking, the butter will cool and separate from the water in the refrigerator. Without water, the process requires more temperature attention.

Step 3: cooking for 2-3 hours

Maintain a temperature of 70-90°C for 2-3 hours. Stir every 15-20 minutes with a wooden spoon. The surface should lightly steam but not boil. Boiling indicates a temperature above 100°C and degradation of cannabinoids. A thermometer in the pot is a necessity, not a luxury.

Why so long? The lipids in the butter must penetrate the cell structure of the herb and extract the cannabinoids. A shorter time (e.g., 30 minutes) yields weak butter. A longer time (e.g., 6 hours) does not improve the result but degrades terpenes and some cannabinoids. The optimal range is 120-180 minutes.

Step 4: straining

Line a sieve with 3-4 layers of cotton cheesecloth. Place it over a bowl or jar. Slowly pour the contents of the pot. Do not squeeze the cheesecloth too hard, as you will extract chlorophyll and plant material that will give a bitter taste. Better results come from gentle draining and waiting 10-15 minutes for most of the fat to flow out on its own.

You can throw away the remaining herb (known as "spent kif") or use it in a tea with warm milk, but the potency will be negligible. Most of the cannabinoids are already present in the butter. Some people use spent kif as a compost additive, but in small amounts, as the plant material is quite acidic.

Step 5: cooling and separating the water

If you used the water method, place the jar with the butter in the refrigerator for 4-6 hours. The butter will solidify on top, and the water will remain below. Knock the butter out of the mold with a knife and pour off the water. Wash the surface with cold water to remove any water-soluble impurities (chlorophyll, cellular residues).

Without the water method, simply pour the butter into a jar and place it in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours to solidify. The first method yields butter with a cleaner taste and lighter color. The second is quicker, but the product may have a more pronounced herbal aroma.

Step 6: portioning

Transfer the hardened butter to a silicone ice cube mold, chocolate mold, or smaller jar. Each 5-15g cube allows for easy dosing. Mark the production date and approximate cannabinoid concentration on each container. The note "20g CBD 9% / 250g butter = 7.2mg CBD per gram of butter" will save time when dosing later.

Butter to dried fruit ratio – how to calculate the dose?

The standard ratio of 250 g of butter + 20 g of 9% CBD herb yields butter with a concentration of about 7.2 mg CBD per gram. According to the American Pharmacists Association, the typical educational dose of CBD is 10-25 mg per serving for adults (APhA, 2023). A teaspoon of hemp butter (5 g) then corresponds to 36 mg CBD, and a tablespoon (15 g) about 108 mg.

Formula for calculating the dose

Formula: (weight of herb × % cannabinoid concentration × 0.8 efficiency factor) / weight of butter = mg/g of butter. Example: 20 g of herb × 9% CBD × 0.8 = 1440 mg CBD. Dividing by 250 g of butter gives us 5.76 mg CBD per gram of butter. The factor of 0.8 accounts for typical home extraction efficiency.

For consumption portions, it's worth converting to teaspoons and tablespoons. 1 teaspoon = about 5 g of butter. 1 tablespoon = about 15 g. For the above butter, a teaspoon contains 28.8 mg of CBD, a tablespoon 86.4 mg. A 1/4 teaspoon dose is about 7.2 mg of CBD – a typical starting dose.

Ratio table for different herb concentrations

  • CBD herb 5%: 250 g of butter + 20 g of herb = approx. 800 mg CBD = 3.2 mg/g of butter = 16 mg per tablespoon
  • CBD herb 9%: 250 g of butter + 20 g of herb = approx. 1440 mg CBD = 5.76 mg/g of butter = 28.8 mg per tablespoon
  • CBD herb 12%: 250 g of butter + 14 g of herb = approx. 1344 mg CBD = 5.38 mg/g of butter = 26.9 mg per tablespoon
  • CBD herb 15%: 250 g of butter + 14 g of herb = approx. 1680 mg CBD = 6.72 mg/g of butter = 33.6 mg per tablespoon

Does more herb = stronger butter?

To a certain extent, yes, but fat has a limited absorption capacity. Above 30 g of herb per 250 g of butter, extraction efficiency decreases. In a study published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in 2019, exceeding a ratio of 1:8 (herb:butter) resulted in a decrease in extraction by 15-25% (Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, 2019). The optimal ratio is 1:12 to 1:18.

Practical consequence: if you want stronger butter, choose herb with a higher concentration instead of adding more. 15% CBD herb yields stronger butter than twice the amount of 5% herb in the same amount of fat. For THC herb, the situation is similar, but dosing requires even more caution.

How to store hemp butter?

Proper storage protects cannabinoids from degradation. According to a study published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2013, CBD and THC degrade at a rate of 13-17% per year at room temperature, but only 1-3% per year in the freezer at -18°C (PubMed, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2013). Light and oxygen additionally accelerate the process by 20-30%.

Refrigerator 2-6°C

The refrigerator is standard for use within 2-3 weeks. Store in a glass jar with an airtight lid. Avoid plastic containers, as the fat may absorb polymers. Keep the jar deep in the refrigerator, not on the door shelf, where the temperature fluctuates with every opening.

Freezer -18°C

For long-term storage, use the freezer. Butter retains 95-99% potency for 4-6 months, and some sources even state up to 12 months at a constant temperature. The best solution is to portion into cubes in a silicone mold and store in an airtight ziplock bag.

Thaw in the refrigerator, not at room temperature, to avoid water condensation. Once thawed, use the cube within a few days and do not refreeze. Repeated freezing-thawing cycles accelerate fat oxidation and cannabinoid degradation.

How to recognize spoiled butter?

Signs of degradation: color change from yellow to dark brown or gray, rancid smell, sour taste, mold on the surface. Any of these symptoms means the butter is not suitable for consumption. Mold is particularly dangerous, as hemp butter contains no preservatives and can be a breeding ground for mycotoxins.

Safe butter has a yellow-green to medium green color (the greenish hue comes from chlorophyll, which is natural), a buttery-herbal smell without rancid notes, and a slightly grassy taste without sharp bitterness. If in doubt, it’s better to throw it away than to risk it.

Practical applications of hemp butter in the kitchen

Hemp butter is a versatile ingredient. In a 2023 survey among 850 edibles users, 73% declared baking as the main use, 41% sandwiches and spreads, and 28% sauces and dressings (Project CBD, 2023). Each of these methods has its temperature and flavor requirements.

Baking: cookies and brownies

Baking at 160-180°C for 12-20 minutes is a safe temperature zone for cannabinoids. Replace half of the regular butter in the recipe with hemp butter (e.g., 50 g of hemp butter + 50 g of regular). Dosing 100 g of brownies into 8 pieces gives 8 mg of CBD per piece with butter at 7.2 mg/g.

Practical tip: add hemp butter at the end, to already cooled dough or cream, if the recipe allows. The shorter cannabinoids are exposed to high temperatures, the better the potency is preserved. Brownies with butter added to still hot batter are less effective than those with butter added after cooling to 50°C.

Sandwiches and spreads

The simplest application: spread a teaspoon of hemp butter on a slice of bread. It pairs perfectly with rye whole grain bread, whole grain toast, or a baguette. Add a slice of avocado, tomato, or fresh herbs (basil, cilantro). The flavor is distinctive, herbal-grassy.

For those sensitive to the intense aroma of hemp, a 1:1 blend with honey works well. The sweetness of the honey masks the herbal aftertaste, creating a "hemp honey" perfect for toast and waffles. The 1:1 ratio also reduces the cannabinoid dose by half.

Sauces and dressings

Pesto, cheese sauces, pasta toppings – anywhere fat is part of the dish. Add hemp butter to prepared sauces; do not fry with it. A high sauce temperature of 60-80°C is safe and does not degrade cannabinoids.

Idea for hemp pesto: 50 g of fresh basil, 30 g of pine nuts, 2 cloves of garlic, 50 g of parmesan, 30 g of hemp butter, juice from 1/2 lemon, 100 ml of olive oil, salt, pepper. Blend everything into a paste. 30 g of hemp butter (7.2 mg CBD/g) gives 216 mg of CBD in the entire pesto. A tablespoon of pesto (15 g) contains about 10-15 mg of CBD.

What not to do?

Do not fry in hemp butter at high temperatures. Above 175°C, CBD and THC begin to degrade, and at 200°C we lose 30-40% of cannabinoids within 10 minutes. Traditional frying (200-220°C) will destroy most active compounds.

Do not add hemp butter to coffee, tea, or alcoholic beverages in hot form above 80°C. The high temperature of the liquid degrades cannabinoids faster than a stove. A better solution: add butter to lukewarm tea or milk at 50-60°C.

Dosing and safety of hemp butter

Edibles work differently than smoking or vaping. According to a PMC review from 2018, the effects of oral forms of cannabinoids appear after 30-120 minutes, peak after 2-4 hours, and last 6-8 hours (PMC, 2018). This is significantly longer than smoking (1-3 hours). Dosing requires patience and caution.

"Start low, go slow" principle„

Start with 1/4 teaspoon of butter (about 1.25 g). For butter made from 9% CBD herb, this gives about 7-9 mg of CBD. Wait at least 90-120 minutes before the next dose. This is a key principle. Many people, not feeling the effect after 30 minutes, reach for an additional dose and then suffer from too strong an effect when both doses start to work simultaneously.

After 5-7 days on a stable dose, you can increase it by 25-50%. The optimal dose for most adults falls within the range of 15-50 mg of CBD daily. Above this value, the additional effect is minimal, and the risk of side effects increases. The most common side effects of CBD: drowsiness, dry mouth, diarrhea at high doses.

Dosing with THC (medical)

Medical marijuana THC requires more cautious dosing. THC in the liver converts to 11-hydroxy-THC, which is 2-3 times more psychoactive than smoked THC. The traditional starting dose is 1-2.5 mg of THC, which is the minimum amount of butter. You will feel the full effect after 2-4 hours, so do not add more earlier.

Patients with a prescription for medical marijuana should discuss dosing with their doctor. The doctor will consider other medications, coexisting conditions, and therapy goals. Self-dosing THC without medical consultation, even if legally obtained, can lead to unwanted reactions.

What to avoid

Do not combine hemp butter with alcohol, especially in the case of THC. Alcohol enhances the effects of THC and can trigger strong anxiety or paranoid reactions. CBD does not have significant interactions with alcohol, but it is still wise to limit the amount of drinks.

Do not drive vehicles or operate machinery after consuming butter with THC. The effects last 6-8 hours, and metabolites can be detected in drug tests even after 24-72 hours. For CBD, there are fewer restrictions, but high doses (50+ mg) can cause drowsiness.

Drug interactions

CBD and THC inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes, mainly CYP3A4 and CYP2C9, which metabolize many medications (PMC, 2019). The list of potentially interacting medications includes: warfarin, statins, anticonvulsants, some antidepressants, opioid painkillers, immunosuppressants.

If you are taking any medications regularly, consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting cannabinoid supplementation. This also applies to hemp butter with CBD, although interactions are usually milder than with pharmaceutical doses (e.g., Epidiolex 600-1500 mg daily).

The most common mistakes when making hemp butter

Most mistakes can be avoided by knowing the typical pitfalls. In a survey of Polish edibles users in 2024, 78% of failed attempts repeated the same three mistakes: incorrect temperature, too short a time, and skipping decarboxylation (Hemp Facts, 2024). Each of these mistakes negates all the effort put into production.

Skipping decarboxylation

This is mistake number one. Without decarboxylation, the butter will contain mainly CBDA and THCA, which do not exhibit their full pharmacological activity. Some herb producers claim that "gentle heating during cooking is sufficient." This is false. 70-90°C for 2-3 hours decarboxylates only 30-50% of cannabinoids.

Full decarboxylation requires a temperature of 105-115°C for 30-45 minutes. This cannot be replaced by cooking at a lower temperature, even for a very long time. Spend 40 minutes on this stage. It’s the difference between working butter and wasted raw material.

Overheating during cooking

The second common mistake: cooking above 100°C. Without a thermometer, it’s easy to overheat. Visual indicators (boiling, intense steaming, browning of the herb) mean it’s already too late. A thermometer with a probe submerged in the butter is an essential part of the process.

What happens with overheating? CBD converts to CBN (cannabinol), which has 10-20% of CBD potency. THC similarly loses potency. At 200°C, we lose 30-40% of cannabinoids in 10 minutes, at 150°C about 5-10% in an hour. That’s why maintaining 70-90°C is so important.

Inaccurate straining

If you press the herb through the sieve too hard, chlorophyll, chlorogenic acid, and other compounds that give a bitter taste will get into the butter. It’s better to strain slowly, in two stages: first through the sieve, then through the cheesecloth. Avoid squeezing the last drops.

Lack of a dose label

After 2 weeks, it’s easy to forget how much herb went into the batch. Without a label, dosing becomes guesswork. Always describe the jar: production date, weight of herb, % cannabinoid concentration, weight of butter, calculated content in mg/g. This takes 30 seconds of work that saves hours of guessing later.

Improper storage

Butter left at room temperature, in a clear jar, on a kitchen windowsill—a guaranteed scenario for potency loss. UV light and heat degrade cannabinoids most quickly. A dark jar in the refrigerator or freezer is standard.

Hemp Butter Recipes – Proven Ideas

Hemp butter opens up dozens of culinary possibilities. According to a survey of home cooks in 2024, the most popular recipes are brownies (47%), oatmeal cookies (22%), milk with honey (15%), and pesto (8%). The remaining 8% are individual adaptations of family recipes (Project CBD, 2024).

Legal aspects of hemp butter in Poland 2026

Poland legally distinguishes between industrial hemp (CBD, up to 0.3% THC) and cannabis (medical marijuana with THC). The first category is legal, the second requires a prescription. According to GIF, by the end of 2025, 87 pharmacies in Poland had the authority to dispense medical marijuana (Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate, 2025). The number of patients with prescriptions exceeded 50,000.

CBD dried herb butter – legal

Producing butter from industrial hemp herb (CBD up to 12% and THC up to 0.3%) is fully legal in Poland. You can buy herb in online and stationary stores, perform decarboxylation at home, and produce butter for personal use. There is no requirement for a prescription or special permits.

The sale of such butter for commercial purposes is subject to Novel Food regulations. The EU requires EFSA authorization for food products containing CBD. The procedure has been ongoing since 2019, so currently, homemade butter for personal use is the safest route.

THC Butter – Medical Only

Possession and production of butter with THC above 0.3% is illegal in Poland (Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction, Journal of Laws 2005 No. 179 item 1485). The exception is medical marijuana prescribed by a doctor. Patients with legally obtained THC herb can produce butter for their therapeutic use.

Indications for prescription include: chronic pain refractory to standard treatments, drug-resistant epilepsy, spasticity in multiple sclerosis, nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy, Tourette syndrome, and anorexia associated with HIV/AIDS and cancer. The physician assesses the appropriateness of treatment individually.

What if I exceed the THC limit?

Herb with THC content above 0.3%, possessed without a prescription, is treated as a drug under the law. Penalties include fines, restriction of liberty, or imprisonment for up to 3 years. In practice, for small amounts for personal use, the prosecutor may dismiss the proceedings under Article 62a of the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction.

This is an important difference: medical marijuana is legal in Poland with a prescription, but only legally obtained raw material. "Medicinal" varieties purchased on the black market, even if the patient has a diagnosis justifying treatment, are not legal. The entire process must be legal: doctor, prescription, pharmacy, receipt.

From the Bucha editorial office: Over the past 18 months, we've noticed a significant increase in interest in homemade CBD butter – customers are asking for it for edibles, not smoking. The most frequently requested herb by home cooks is Mars CBD 9%, which has a stable flavor profile and is effective for fat extraction. Another common request concerns thermometers for precise decarboxylation.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what temperature should I perform decarboxylation of hemp herb?

The optimal decarboxylation temperature is 105-115°C for 30-45 minutes for CBD and 105-110°C for 40-50 minutes for THC. In a study Journal of Natural Products (2016), the highest conversion of CBDA to CBD (95-99%) was achieved at 110°C for 40 minutes. Higher temperatures degrade cannabinoids.

What butter to herb ratios should be used?

The standard ratio is 250 g of clarified butter to 14-20 g of hemp herb. For 9% CBD herb, this yields about 1260-1800 mg of CBD in 250 g of butter, or 5-7 mg of CBD per teaspoon. For 15% THC (medical) herb, the values are similar, but the THC concentration requires legal and medical oversight.

Why do cannabinoids dissolve in fat and not in water?

CBD and THC are highly lipophilic compounds, meaning they are soluble in fats. The logP coefficient is about 6.3 for CBD and 6.97 for THC (PMC, Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2020). Milk fat contains 80-82% lipids, which is why clarified butter binds cannabinoids more effectively than most other carriers.

How long can homemade hemp butter be stored?

In the refrigerator at 2-6°C, hemp butter stays fresh for 2-3 weeks. In the freezer at -18°C, it lasts 4-6 months without significant loss of potency. According to studies Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2013), cannabinoids degrade at a rate of 13-17% per year at room temperature and only 1-3% in the freezer.

Is butter with THC legal in Poland in 2026?

Possession and production of butter with THC is illegal in Poland if the THC content exceeds 0.3% (Journal of Laws 2005 No. 179 item 1485). The exception is medical marijuana prescribed by a doctor. Butter from CBD herb with THC content below 0.3% is legal and does not require a prescription.

How to dose homemade hemp butter?

Start with 1/4 teaspoon (about 1.25 g) and wait 90-120 minutes before the next dose. The effects of edibles appear after 30-120 minutes and last 6-8 hours (PMC, 2018). For butter made from 9% CBD herb, a dose of 1/4 teaspoon is about 1.5 mg CBD. A tablespoon (15 g) contains about 18 mg CBD.

Can you fry in hemp butter?

Yes, but only up to 160°C. Above 175°C, CBD and THC begin to degrade, and at 200°C we lose 30-40% of cannabinoids in 10 minutes (Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2013). It’s better to add hemp butter to finished dishes or use it in baked goods baked at 160-180°C for a short time.

Is hemp butter with CBD psychoactive?

No. CBD does not exhibit psychoactive effects regardless of the dose, as confirmed by a report WHO from 2018. Butter from CBD herb legally sold in Poland contains a maximum of 0.3% THC, which when calculated per serving gives negligible amounts of this substance. The effect is limited to relaxation and support for recovery.

Summary – Master the Art of Hemp Butter

Homemade hemp butter is a cost-effective and precise method of utilizing cannabinoids. The key to success lies in three stages: thorough decarboxylation at 110°C for 40 minutes, cooking at 70-90°C for 2-3 hours, and proper storage in the refrigerator or freezer. A candy thermometer for 30-50 PLN is the best investment in the entire process.

Remember three safety rules. First, start with small doses (1/4 teaspoon) and wait 90-120 minutes before the next dose. Second, label each batch of butter with the date and calculated cannabinoid content. Third, in the case of THC, use only legally obtained medical marijuana with a prescription.

Homemade production gives full control over quality, dosing, and cost. Compared to ready-made edibles, you save 2-4 times in terms of milligrams of active CBD. Additionally, you eliminate unnecessary preservatives and sugars. The entire process takes about 4 hours of work, and a batch of 250 g is enough for 50-100 servings.

If you are just starting your journey with cannabinoids in food, consider an alternative. Ready broad-spectrum CBD oil offers precise dosing of 2.5-5 mg per drop without the need for self-decarboxylation. This is a good starting point before investing in homemade butter production. In both cases, it’s crucial to choose a reliable, certified source of raw material.

This article is for informational and educational purposes and does not constitute medical advice. CBD derived from industrial hemp Cannabis sativa L. (THC below 0.3%) is legal in Poland. High-THC cannabis is available only by medical prescription as medical marijuana. Before starting cannabinoid supplementation, consult your doctor, especially if you are taking other medications, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.
