Inhaled terpinolene exhibited sedative effects in mice; the effect was also maintained in mice with impaired sense of smell, indicating that the action occurred after the compound was absorbed into the body through the nose, not solely through the perception of scent.

The second paper, authored by Okumura N, Yoshida H, Nishimura Y, Kitagishi Y, Matsuda S, appeared in Oncology Letters in 2012 (PMID:22740904) and concerned cell culture. Terpinolene reduced the level of AKT1 protein and inhibited the proliferation of human leukemia cells of the K562 line in culture; the study did not address pain, sleep, or anxiety.

The boundary of this data can be precisely defined. No effect of terpinolene on pain, anxiety, or sleep has been demonstrated in humans or in any animal pain model; the available data only includes sedative effects after inhalation in mice and its impact on leukemia cell lines in vitro.

The aromatic components of this profile boil at a very wide range: myrcene around 167 degrees Celsius, terpinolene at 184, and caryophyllene only above 256. The value for humulene was measured under reduced pressure, so it does not transfer to a device operating under atmospheric pressure, and for ocimene, the source does not provide measurement conditions at all. The gap between myrcene and caryophyllene reaches nearly ninety degrees, which is more than the entire useful range of regulation for typical equipment.
