Ocimene appears in the profile descriptions of fifteen strains from Polish pharmacies, but no pharmacy position indicates it as a leading terpene, and all the evidence is based on one study on cell culture.

What is ocymene and where is it found outside of hemp?

Ocymene is a volatile monoterpene with the formula C10H16 and a molecular weight of 136.23, recorded in the PubChem database under the number 18756 as beta-ocymene. Outside of hemp, it has been noted in common hop and jaborandi, and the FAO and WHO expert committee lists it under number 1338 in the class of flavoring substances.

In terms of structure, it is an open-chain hydrocarbon, without a ring like limonene and pinene. Its systematic name is 3,7-dimethylocta-1,3,6-triene, and its CAS number is 13877-91-3. The profile databases used by this cluster simply write "ocymene" and do not specify the isomer, while the PubChem record and the only paper in our evidence base refer to the beta form. This is not a minor editorial detail: the alpha and beta forms have the same mass but are separate compounds, and the notation without the Greek letter does not clarify which one is being referred to.

The same record describes the pure compound as a colorless or straw-colored liquid with a warm, herbal scent, insoluble in water and soluble in oils. This is also where the only physical number we have for ocymene comes from: a boiling point of 177 degrees Celsius, provided by the expert committee on food additives.

The occurrence outside of hemp is described sparingly by the PubChem database. It mentions common hop (Humulus lupulus) and jaborandi (Pilocarpus microphyllus), then adds a formula for other organisms for which data is available. The list of species is therefore not complete, and it cannot be read how common this compound is in the plant world. The entry in the class of flavoring substances states that the food industry recognizes this ingredient as approved for use, which is information about trade, not about its effects on humans.

How long does it take for ocymene to reach the body and how long does it stay there?

It is unknown. No one has measured how much ocymene from dried flower enters the bloodstream after vaporization or how quickly the body eliminates it. The public database provides one number for this compound, the boiling point of 177 degrees Celsius, and even that does not indicate at what pressure it was measured.

The route of administration determines the course more than the variety itself. After vaporization, the substance passes from the lungs to the blood almost immediately, so the first sensations appear after a few minutes, the intensity increases for another ten to thirty minutes, and the whole effect lasts for two to four hours. After ingestion, the raw material first passes through the intestine and liver, so the first sensations are awaited from half an hour to two hours, and the episode can last six, sometimes eight hours. Hence the most common mistake with oral administration: anyone who thinks nothing is happening after thirty minutes and takes another dose will receive both doses at once. The above ranges describe the route of administration, not this variety; pharmacokinetic studies for a single cultivar have not been published.

The number 177 degrees comes from the record of the FAO and WHO expert committee and in our data carries the designation of measurement without specified pressure. The distinction is significant: under reduced pressure, the same substance boils at a lower temperature, so the notation without pressure cannot be compared with values measured under standard conditions. Therefore, the field for the boiling point at atmospheric pressure is left empty for ocymene.

The boiling point describes the moment when a pure liquid begins to boil in a laboratory vessel. It is not a setting of the device, and we do not provide any settings or methods of taking the material here. We also do not have data on how much ocymene remains in the vapors after heating the dried flower: none of the sources in this project measure that.

What have studies shown about the effects of ocymene?

One paper and one test tube. In the evidence base of this cluster, ocymene has exactly one study: a cell culture with the Leishmania parasite and macrophages, published in 2023. There is no work on rodents, no work on humans, so no results can be transferred to a patient.

The position comes from the journal Pharmaceuticals (Basel), 2023, PMID identifier: 37259336. Authors: Sousa JMS, Nunes TAL, Rodrigues RRL, Sousa JPA, Val MDCA, Coelho FADR, Santos ALSD, Maciel NB. The study model is a test tube: a cell culture with a parasite and host macrophages, without an animal organism at any stage.

The result of this work in our evidence base reads as follows. Beta-ocymene destroyed amastigote forms of Leishmania in culture inside macrophages at an effective concentration of 0.89 micromolar, disrupting the permeability of the parasite's membrane; it increased the secretion of tumor necrosis factor alpha, nitric oxide, and reactive oxygen species, while decreasing interleukins 10 and 6. The authors called the result promising and indicated animal studies as a step yet to be taken.

For a person taking dried flower from the pharmacy, nothing direct follows from this. The effective concentration is established in a vessel, where the researcher selects the dose around the cells, not in the body, to which the ingredient would first have to arrive in any amount. The caveat about animal studies as a step yet to be taken actually comes from the authors themselves, so the next step in this line of research is still ahead, and there are more steps between the test tube and the patient.

What has not been shown about ocymene?

There are no studies of ocymene in humans or animals. The only paper concerns cell culture and a parasite, not humans, and the authors themselves point to animal studies as a step before them. Claims of antiviral and antibacterial effects in humans have no support in it.

The lack of studies in humans means exactly what it says: there is no measurement of dosage, no measurement of time, and no described patient. In the only paper we have, the compound was applied directly to cells in a vessel, at a concentration chosen by the researchers. Between such a setup and inhaling vapors of dried flower lies the entire path, which has not been measured for ocymene: how much of it passes into the blood, how quickly the liver eliminates it, and what happens to the rest.

Claims circulating about this compound online have no support in this work, and our evidence base does not provide any other. This especially applies to claims of antiviral or antibacterial effects in humans: a study on a parasite in cell culture is not about that, and translating such a result to a person taking the medication would be an abuse, not a shortcut.

Separately stands the issue that is rarely discussed: it is not even certain that a given strain contains this compound. Of the two profile databases used in this project, one mentions ocymene, while the other is silent about it in every description. The statement about what has not been shown therefore also includes composition: evidence of action and evidence of presence are equally poor here.

We state this directly because such a record is rare. Pages about strains usually list terpenes and immediately assign them effects, without showing what that assignment is based on. Here, it stands on one position from the test tube, and that is the whole answer.

What side effects have been reported after ocymene?

None. For ocymene itself, there is not a single report in this database, as safety reports describe the medicinal product, not a single component of the profile. The only work measured the fate of the parasite in cell culture, not tolerance in humans, so it says nothing about symptoms.

Reports of adverse effects are collected for medicinal products with a batch number, not for the strain name, so the following pertains to hemp dried flower as a group of raw materials. The most frequently reported symptoms are dry mouth, red eyes, and increased heart rate. Dizziness upon rapid standing, daytime drowsiness, and temporary worsening of short-term memory are less frequently described, as well as anxiety that increases with dosage. A separate issue is medications taken concurrently, especially sedatives and those affecting coagulation: their assessment requires knowledge of the entire list of preparations, not just the description of the plant. We do not provide the frequency of these symptoms numerically, as public compilations for hemp dried flower in Poland do not separate them by individual products.

The general belief that vapors of volatile compounds in high concentrations can irritate the respiratory tract and skin comes from areas other than this evidence base, and for ocymene, we do not have such a measurement and do not provide it second-hand. The aerosol inhaled from dried flower is, after all, a mixture in which this compound never stands alone: in descriptions where it is mentioned, it most often neighbors with myrcene or caryophyllene. Therefore, no symptom could be attributed solely to it even if reports existed.

Which strains from Polish pharmacies have ocymene as the leading terpene?

None. The pharmacy catalog used by this cluster names the leading terpene only six names, and ocymene is not among them, so none of the one hundred forty-one entries indicates it as leading. In the profile descriptions, however, this compound appears with fifteen strains.

The six names from the pharmacy dictionary are myrcene, caryophyllene, limonene, terpinolene, pinene, and nerolidol. Ocymene is not in this dictionary, so the question of dominance does not have an affirmative answer here, and it cannot be generated by stretching the data. Among the eighty-five strains of the cluster, caryophyllene is most often the leading terpene, with thirty strains, followed closely by myrcene, with twenty.

The fifteen strains to which the profile source assigns ocymene include twenty-two pharmacy entries out of one hundred forty-one. The catalog assigns them four different leading terpenes: terpinolene and myrcene five strains each, caryophyllene three, and pinene two. Where the profile source sees ocymene, the pharmacy catalog sees something else, and the table below compares one with the other precisely to avoid obscuring this difference.

The complete list of pharmaceutical products is maintained by the list of strains available in Polish pharmacies. Dried flower issued by a doctor's prescription is a different category of product than retail dried flower and the two lists should not be confused.

How do we know that the strain contains ocimene at all?

From a single source and therefore with reservations. Ocimene is mentioned exclusively by the database budcare.pl, in twenty out of one hundred forty-three of its descriptions with a detailed profile. The second database, medweed.pl, does not mention it even once in sixty-five descriptions, so the presence of the compound is based here on a single entry.

Within this one source, the entry is also not stable. Ghost Train Haze has two descriptions there, and ocimene appears in one of them. Island Sweet Skunk has five descriptions, the compound appears in four, while the fifth lists five other names. These are not different strains, but separate entries for the same strain, describing distinct registration positions.

The second reason for caution is numerical. The sums of the shares given in these twenty descriptions yield thirteen different values, from 65 to 101, although the components of one entry cannot exceed one hundred. Since the sum does not even close to two-thirds of the scale at one point, and exceeds it at another, the denominator remains unknown. Therefore, we do not assign any share number to the name of the compound here, even though the source provides it.

The third thing is the name itself. The source writes "ocimene" without the Greek letter, while the record in PubChem and the only evidence work refer to the beta form. From the strain description, it cannot be determined whether it refers to the same isomer, and we do not assume this from the source. The sixteenth name, under which this source lists ocimene, is Bakerstreet and has no equivalent in our pharmaceutical list, so it was not included in the above compilation.

Does the presence of ocimene in the profile say anything about the aroma or the effects of the strain?

It does not. The scent and effect labels are assigned by the source to the entire entry, never to a single compound, and in each of these twenty descriptions, alongside ocimene, there are from two to eight other terpenes. Such a record does not allow for extracting the contribution of a single substance to the aroma.

In the twenty descriptions with ocimene, the most common scent labels are peppery and pine, with nine entries each, followed by citrus and mint, with eight each. The range is so wide that it does not form any scent profile attributed to this compound. Pure beta-ocimene is described by the expert committee as a liquid with a warm, herbal aroma, but that is the characteristic of the isolated substance in the context of food aromas, not a description of the dried flower's scent.

The same applies to the effect label. The database assigns it to each entry as a commercial classification, and among the twenty descriptions with ocimene, fourteen carry the stimulating label. This is a sales record, not a research result, and there is no work on this compound in humans behind it. Our evidence database has one entry for ocimene, described above, and it does not mention any sensations.

Co-occurrence, however, says something different than is usually written. In seventeen out of twenty descriptions, ocimene is adjacent to myrcene, in fifteen to caryophyllene, and in thirteen to terpinolene. A strain with ocimene is therefore primarily a strain whose profile is described multi-componentially, not a strain distinguished by a single component.
