Island Sweet Skunk (S-LAB, Synoptis Pharma, Tilray): what is not known about it

Three producers, five registered entries, and a profile that two Polish databases describe differently. Collected in one place: what can be confirmed about this strain and what no one has measured.

What is Island Sweet Skunk and where does it come from?

The lineage is unknown. None of the sources on which this description is based provide the parents of Island Sweet Skunk, and the shared part of the name with another strain available in pharmacies proves nothing. The strain thus functions as a commercial name with a documented chemical profile, but without a documented lineage.

Unestablished origin is not an exception here. Among the 85 cultivars described in this compilation, the lineage has been established for 60, while 25 remain unknown. There are usually two reasons: the breeder never announced what they crossed, or the circulating versions of the parents contradict each other, and none can be confirmed at the source.

Similarities in names can be misleading. In Polish pharmacies, there is another strain with the word Skunk in its name, Lemon Skunk, which also has no established parents. The shared word does not create a relationship nor does it exclude it; it only indicates that two breeders reached for the same piece of marketing tradition.

However, the chemical profile is documented, albeit unevenly. Two Polish databases describing pharmacy assortments provide different compositions for this strain: the broader one lists nine terpene positions, while the narrower one lists five. They also differ in the description of genetics, as the first consistently refers to sativa, while the second mentions a hybrid for one position, under the same commercial name.

What the source describes Broader database Narrower database
Registration positions of this strain five two
Listed terpenes bisabolol, humulene, caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene, nerolidol, ocimene, pinene, terpinolene bisabolol, caryophyllene, nerolidol, pinene, terpinolene
Leading terpene pinene pinene
Genetics sativa for each position sativa for one, hybrid for the other
Margin stated with declaration yes, for each position only for one

The discrepancy concerns four names: humulene, limonene, myrcene, and ocimene appear only in the broader description. It is unclear whether the narrower source did not measure them or considered them too minor to mention. Without a protocol for examining both lists, no agreement can be reached, and choosing one of them would be an editorial decision masquerading as measurement.

Which producers supply this strain to Polish pharmacies?

Three producers: S-LAB, Synoptis Pharma, and Tilray. They are backed by five registration positions, as two of them introduced this strain in two potency variants. Each position is dried flower from the Rpw category, so the decision for release is made by prescription, not by patient choice at the counter.

Producer Registration entries What differs in the record
S-LAB two two power variants; the weaker profile has been shortened to five terpenes, while the stronger lists nine
Synoptis Pharma one the only entry described by both databases; the genetics diverge between them
Tilray two both variants are described as sativa; in the narrower database, the page title provides a different declaration than its own record

The differences in the table do not concern the dried flower itself, but rather what has been recorded about it. The same manufacturer may be described once with a full list of terpenes and once shortened to five names, although the registration number remains unchanged. This is a difference in description, not in the product, and it cannot be concluded that one batch smells different from another.

The registration records place THC in the range of 16.2-24.2%. Such a wide range arises because the entries are based on two different declarations, and each declaration has an allowable margin of ten percent up and down. Providing a single number would imply a precision that is not present in this record.

The composition of the assortment changes faster than can be described in text: the permit for approval expires after five years, can be revoked, and individual batches can disappear from wholesalers for weeks. The current state leads a collective overview of strains available in pharmacies, as a repeated list here would quickly become outdated.

How does Island Sweet Skunk smell and taste?

Commercial descriptions indicate four notes: mango, mint, pepper, and pine resin. This set is repeated for each entry of this strain in the broader database, with one of them lacking pepper. These are sensory descriptors entered by the seller, not results of chemical analysis, and should be read as such.

The pine note has a chemical basis in this profile. Pinene is the terpene to which this scent owes its name, and it leads the composition of the strain according to both sources. Mango and mint do not have such a basis: no entry in the profile directly corresponds to them, and the fruity impression arises from the entire mixture.

The taste also depends on what the device does with the dried flower. At a low setting, the vaporizer first releases the most volatile substances, so the first draws can be sharper and more resinous, while later ones are heavier. Smoking alters the experience even more, as in the flame most aromatic compounds break down before reaching the mouth.

None of these descriptions are measurements. There is no public sensory analysis of Polish batches of this strain, and the noses of two people do not agree even on one jar. Descriptors from commercial databases should be read as a hint of direction, not as a promise of a repeatable scent.

How long does it take for this strain to take effect and how long does the effect last?

The route of administration determines this, not the cultivar. Vapor inhaled from a vaporizer changes state even during the session, acting most strongly in the first quarter hour, and subsiding within a few hours. A capsule or oil shifts this same course forward by hours and extends it roughly twice as long.

Specific numbers come from the pharmacology of the active substance, not from studies on this cultivar. Pharmacokinetic studies regarding inhalation place the onset in the range of 1-10 minutes, maximum concentration in plasma around the tenth minute, and the waning of the perceived effect after 2-4 hours from stopping the device.

Orally, the picture looks different because the dose first reaches the liver. The sensation builds only after 30-90 minutes, with a maximum often recorded between the first and third hour, and the entire experience lasts 4-8 hours, longer for some individuals. The same portion of raw material then gives a completely different graph, although the dried flower remains the same.

For the strain itself, there is no measurement. No one has separately studied how the dried flower of Island Sweet Skunk behaves in the body, and such work should not be expected: pharmacokinetics is established for the active substance, not for the commercial name of the flower. The method of administration changes the course more significantly than the difference between cultivars.

What is known, and what is not known about the effects of this strain?

It is known what the strain contains; it is not known what it does. The terpene composition is described by two commercial sources, agreeing at least on the leading terpene. The effects of pinene itself have only been studied outside of humans, and attributing effects described in mice to the strain would be a leap that the data does not support.

The first of two studies in the evidence base of this service concerns sleep. Yang and his team demonstrated in 2016 that orally administered (-)-alpha-pinene prolonged NREM sleep time in mice and shortened sleep latency in EEG and EMG recordings, acting as a partial modulator of the benzodiazepine site of the GABA-A receptor (PMID:27573669). The intensity of NREM sleep and the duration of REM sleep did not change.

The second study describes the inflammatory response in vitro. Kim and his team showed in 2015 that alpha-pinene reduced the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-alpha in LPS-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophage cultures, as well as the expression of iNOS and COX-2, by inhibiting the MAPK and NF-kB pathways (PMID:26119957). This is a cell culture study, not a patient study.

The boundary of this data must be set clearly. No anxiolytic or analgesic effects of pinene have been demonstrated in humans; available data only concerns its impact on sleep in mice after oral administration and its anti-inflammatory effects on mouse macrophages in culture. The rest, such as descriptions of stimulation or mood improvement, comes from seller materials and patient reports and does not have the status of evidence. Separate texts gather the state of knowledge about the pinenie oraz o konopiach przy zaburzeniach snu.

What side effects have been reported for this strain?

There are no separate reports for this strain. Safety monitoring is conducted for the raw material and the active substance, not for the commercial name of the flower, so there is no compilation indicating how often a specific symptom occurs after using Island Sweet Skunk. This is a lack of data, not proof of safety.

However, symptoms described for the inhalation of the raw material itself are known: dry mouth, dizziness, increased heart rate, drowsiness, redness of the conjunctiva, and temporary worsening of short-term memory. Their intensity depends on the dose and whether the patient has been using cannabinoids for a long time, not on the name of the dried flower.

More severe reactions, such as a strong anxiety attack or a psychotic episode, have been reported after high doses, more often in individuals who had not previously used cannabinoids. Declarations for this strain reach the upper half of what is available in pharmacies, so caution with the first administration is warranted.

The combination of this strain with other medications is a separate issue and cannot be resolved at the cultivar level. Whether a dried flower with such a declaration is even applicable is determined by the attending physician, who has insight into the rest of the therapy. This text describes the state of knowledge and does not replace such an assessment.

How to vaporize this strain?

The setting is chosen based on what is to be vaporized. Pinene, the leading terpene in this profile, boils according to the PubChem database at 156.2 degrees Celsius under atmospheric pressure, which is the lowest of the eleven terpenes collected in this project. Terpinolene boils at 184, and caryophyllene only at 257.5 degrees.

The boiling point, however, is not the vaporizer setting. The number from the chemical database indicates when the pure substance transitions to vapor under atmospheric pressure, while in the device's chamber lies the ground flower, hot on the heating side and cooler in the middle of the portion. The display reading describes the heater, not drought.

Comparing such numbers with each other also has its limits. Among the eleven terpenes in this project, the public database provides boiling points along with pressure for only six; for nerolidol, there is a number without pressure, and for bisabolol, it is not provided at all. A table arranged from such records compares values that were not measured under the same conditions.

The practical conclusion is modest. Lower settings release the most volatile components first, while higher settings reach for the remaining ingredients and a larger portion of the active substance, at the cost of a harsher inhale. The choice belongs to the patient and the attending physician, not to the text describing the strain, as it depends on the dose and tolerance.

Which strains are related to it?

None, as far as the evidence is concerned. The kinship graph in this compilation is built from established pedigrees, and Island Sweet Skunk does not have one, so it is impossible to indicate either siblings or a common parent with another strain available in Polish pharmacies. An empty list here is a result, not a gap.

It may be tempting to fill this gap with a name. The other strain with the Skunk component in Polish pharmacies, Lemon Skunk, also does not have established parents, and its profile is led by a different terpene, terpinolene instead of pinene. Adding kinship based on a common word would create a false connection that no one could later undo.

Instead of siblings, there are cross-comparisons. This strain can be compared with others based on what has actually been recorded: by the leading terpene, by the number of producers, by the consistency of sources. Pinene leads in six out of eighty-five cultivars described here, so it is a narrow but real group.

Separate texts compare Island Sweet Skunk with the strain Lilac Diesel oraz z Cataract Kush. We do not conduct comparisons with Pink Kush because both strains come from the same three producers and there is no difference in availability. Neither describes kinship because it does not exist; they compare profiles and availability, which can be verified at the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Island Sweet Skunk have a known pedigree?

No. Available sources do not provide the parents of this strain, and the name is not proof of kinship. In this compilation, the pedigree remains undetermined for twenty-five out of eighty-five described cultivars.

How many producers supply Island Sweet Skunk to Polish pharmacies?

Three: S-LAB, Synoptis Pharma, and Tilray. They are responsible for a total of five registration entries, as two of them registered two potency variants of the same strain.

Is this strain a sativa?

Sources are not in agreement. One database describes all entries as sativa, while another lists one entry as a hybrid. The division into sativa and indica does not, in fact, have a basis in chemical composition.

Which terpene leads in the profile of this strain?

Pinen. Both sources indicate it, although they differ in the list of other profile components. We do not provide percentage shares, as none of the sources disclose what they refer to.

Does pinen have a calming effect?

This has not been demonstrated in humans. A 2016 study describes an extension of NREM sleep in mice after oral administration, which is a result obtained in animals and does not directly translate to inhaled vapor in patients.

Is Island Sweet Skunk available over the counter?

No. Dried flower belongs to the Rpw category and is issued only with a prescription from a doctor. The availability of individual items changes over time, regardless of what the manufacturer states.

Dried flower is a pharmaceutical raw material issued by a doctor's prescription in the Rpw category. The material is for informational purposes and does not replace medical advice or the decisions of the attending physician.
