5 cannabis dips for a party - quick recipes

Five cannabis dips for a party: hummus, baba ganoush, tzatziki, cheese dip, and guacamole. Quantities, steps, times, and the principle of cold hemp oil.

The party is in three hours, and there needs to be something to dip into on the table. Each of the five dips from this set takes 5 to 15 minutes to make, and they all share one ingredient: hulled hemp seeds or cold-pressed oil from those seeds. From the white cheese dip to the smoky baba ganoush, no flavor repeats. The seeds add protein and crunch, while the oil provides a nutty finish that should not be heated. Four bases can easily last overnight in the fridge, so on the day of the party, you only need to prepare the guacamole and sprinkle. Below you have the quantities, the order of steps, and times for each dip, plant-based versions of each base, and an explanation of why hemp oil goes into the cold mixture and not on the pan.

KEY INFORMATION
• Hulled hemp seeds contain 31.6 g of protein per 100 g (USDA FoodData Central, item 170148), so two tablespoons of sprinkle add about 6 g to the bowl.
• Mix hemp oil only into cold, ready mixtures: researchers recommend not exceeding 190°C or one hour of heating (Liang et al., 2025).
• The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in seeds is about 3:1, compared to about 10:1 in the average diet of industrialized countries (Farinon et al., Nutrients, 2020).
• You can make four bases the day before; leave the guacamole and sprinkle for the last minute.

Why do hemp seeds fit into party dips?

Because they add what dips lack the most, which is protein. Hulled hemp seeds have 31.6 g of protein per 100 g (USDA FoodData Central, item 170148), so two tablespoons of sprinkle, about 20 g, add about 6 g of protein to the bowl.

One caveat to this number, as it circulates the internet in an inflated version. Seeds contain all nine essential amino acids, but the presence of an amino acid is not the same as having a sufficient amount to meet demand. House, Neufeld, and Leson (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2010) studied thirty batches of hemp products and calculated a PDCAAS score for hulled seeds at 63-66 percent, indicating lysine as the first limiting amino acid. For the table, the practical conclusion is that hemp best complements legumes, which have lysine in excess. Hummus made from chickpeas with a sprinkle of hemp thus performs better than the same seeds on a slice of bread.

The second advantage is texture. Soft, creamy bases gain a delicate crunch, and unlike pumpkin or sesame seeds, hemp seeds are soft enough not to overpower the dip’s flavor.

The third thing is the fat profile. In 100 g of hulled seeds, there are 27.4 g of linoleic acid and 8.68 g of alpha-linolenic acid, meaning the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is roughly 3:1 (USDA FoodData Central, item 170148). Farinon et al. (Nutrients, 2020) consider a beneficial range to be from 3:1 to 5:1, while the average diet in industrialized countries approaches 10:1. Hemp seeds shift this balance in a positive direction, although one bowl of dip will not fix any diet.

How to make cannabis hummus and baba ganoush?

Both dips are made in a blender and both are based on tahini, so it pays to make them in one go. Hummus takes 10 minutes of work, baba ganoush takes 15 minutes plus 40 minutes of baking the eggplant. The quantities given below yield about 400 g and about 350 g of dip, enough for eight servings.

Do not pour out the aquafaba from the can: it makes the hummus fluffy.

  • 400 g of canned chickpeas, drained, plus reserved aquafaba
  • 3 tablespoons of tahini
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 1 clove of garlic, salt, a pinch of cumin
  • 3 tablespoons of hulled hemp seeds for the blender and 2 tablespoons for topping

Blend everything except the sprinkle, adding aquafaba one tablespoon at a time. Keep the blender running for 2 to 3 minutes until the mixture lightens and becomes fluffy. Season, transfer to a bowl, and sprinkle with seeds and sweet paprika. A variant with roasted peppers and a full description of the technique can be found in the post hummus with hemp seeds.

Baba ganoush needs 2 medium eggplants (about 500 g), 2 tablespoons of tahini, 2 tablespoons of hemp oil, a tablespoon of lemon juice, a clove of garlic, salt, and 3 tablespoons of hulled hemp seeds and parsley for decoration. Prick the eggplants with a fork and bake for 40 to 45 minutes at 220°C or char them over a flame, turning until the skin is blackened. Cool, scoop out the flesh with a spoon, and drain through a sieve; otherwise, the dip will be watery. Blend with tahini, lemon, garlic, and salt. Mix the hemp oil only into the cooled mixture, and finally sprinkle with seeds and parsley.

How to make cannabis tzatziki and cheese dip?

Tzatziki and cheese dip do not require a blender and are ready in 10 minutes, including chopping. Both benefit from chilling: 20 minutes in the fridge is enough for the garlic to spread throughout the mixture. The quantities given yield about 250 g of dip each, or four servings from each bowl.

  • 200 g of thick Greek or coconut yogurt
  • 1/2 of a cucumber
  • 1 clove of garlic, salt, pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of cold-pressed hemp oil
  • 1 tablespoon of lime or lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of hulled hemp seeds, optionally dill or mint

Grate the cucumber on a coarse grater and squeeze it out well in a paper towel. This is the most common mistake in this recipe: an unpressed cucumber will dilute the dip in fifteen minutes. Mix the yogurt with the cucumber and pressed garlic, add the oil and lemon juice, season to taste, and stir in the hemp seeds. Chill.

The cheese dip is the quickest of the five. Mash 200 g of cream cheese with a tablespoon of hemp oil, a pressed clove of garlic, salt, and pepper, then add 2 chopped chives and a pinch of smoked paprika. Do not blend, as the chunky texture is an asset here. Top with 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds. In the plant-based version, replace the cheese with blended cashew cream.

How to make cannabis guacamole and what to dip into the dips?

You can make guacamole in 10 minutes and, unlike the other five, serve it immediately, as avocado darkens. Add lime juice right after mashing the flesh, not at the end. Sprinkle hemp seeds only at the table: in the moist mixture, they soften within an hour and lose their crunch.

  • 2 ripe Hass avocados
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1/4 of a red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, salt
  • a handful of cilantro or parsley, optionally jalapeño
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of hulled hemp seeds

Mash the avocado with a fork into a coarse, uneven mixture, drizzle with lime, add the onion with garlic, herbs, and salt, and mix. Do not blend, as smooth guacamole loses character. Add salt at the end and taste: lime strongly enhances the salty flavor, so it is easy to oversalt. Chop jalapeño without seeds if there are children at the party. A more elaborate version is described in the post guacamole with hemp seeds.

Choose dippers according to the dip’s thickness. For creamy bases, such as hummus, tzatziki, and cheese dip, hard vegetables work well: carrots, celery, radishes, cucumber. For baba ganoush and guacamole, something that can hold the heavy mass works better, so tortillas, pita, or hemp flour crackers are ideal.

Can hemp oil be heated?

No, for the purposes of these recipes. Hemp seed oil is over 80 percent polyunsaturated fatty acids (Callaway, Euphytica, 2004), which oxidize the fastest. Liang et al. (Food Research International, 2025) heated it at 170, 190, 210, and 230°C for times ranging from 15 minutes to 3 hours. The peroxide value and acid value remained within Codex standards under all tested conditions, and no new trans fatty acids were formed. The authors still recommended not exceeding 190°C or one hour of thermal processing.

In dips, you do not even need that. The oil is added to the cold, ready mixture as a flavor finish, not as a frying fat. If any recipe calls for sautéing garlic or spices, do it in olive oil or canola oil and add the hemp oil only at the end when the pan cools down.

Storage works on the same principle. Cold-pressed hemp oil contains chlorophylls that accelerate oxidation in light, so keep the bottle in the dark and in the fridge. Lo Turco et al. (Antioxidants, 2023) tracked such oil for 12 weeks stored in clear bottles and showed that filtering significantly improves its resistance to oxidation.

From our servings, one more thing emerges: oil mixed a few hours earlier loses its distinct aroma. So we leave a spoon on top, just before bringing the bowl out. The difference in aroma is greater than in taste, and it is the aroma that decides which dip someone will reach for first.

Frequently asked questions

How many hemp seeds to add to one dip?

For a bowl of 300 to 400 g, 2 to 3 tablespoons of hulled seeds, about 20 to 30 g, will suffice. Two tablespoons provide about 6 g of protein and about 7.5 g of polyunsaturated fatty acids (USDA FoodData Central, item 170148). More starts to dominate the texture, which is a loss with creamy bases.

Can dips with hemp seeds be intoxicating?

No. The psychoactive substances in cannabis are produced in the glandular hairs of the flower, which are not present in the seeds or roots, so the seeds themselves do not contain them (Farinon et al., Nutrients, 2020). Trace amounts may end up on the shell during harvesting, but they are removed by cleaning and hulling.

Which dips can you prepare the day before?

Hummus, baba ganoush, tzatziki, and cheese dip will last a day in an airtight container in the fridge, and tzatziki actually benefits from this as the garlic has time to meld. Make guacamole no more than 2 hours before serving. Sprinkle hemp seeds on all bowls just before bringing them to the table.

How to store hemp oil after opening?

In a dark bottle, in the fridge, and for as short a time as possible. Cold-pressed oil has a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids and chlorophylls, which accelerate oxidation in light (Lo Turco et al., Antioxidants, 2023). In that study, filtered oil maintained quality for 12 weeks.

What to substitute for Greek yogurt in a vegan version?

Thick unsweetened coconut yogurt or silken tofu blended until smooth. Both have a density similar to Greek yogurt, so the proportions in the recipe remain unchanged. In the cheese dip, cashew cream works well, and hummus and baba ganoush are plant-based by definition.

How much dip to count per guest?

With five bowls, we plan about 70 g of dip per person, or about 15 g from each. The amounts given above total about 1.6 kg, which is enough for 8 to 10 people if other snacks are available. Count about 60 g of dippers per head.
