Guacamole with hemp seeds – a Mexican classic with a hemp twist

Guacamole with hemp seeds – a classic Mexican dip enriched with protein and omega-3. Ready in 10 minutes, no cooking required. Step-by-step recipe with variations.

Guacamole is already good on its own, but adding two tablespoons of hulled hemp seeds transforms it into something that provides complete plant protein and omega acids in one snack. Avocado and hemp seeds have a similar fat profile – both are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, both creamy and nutty. Together, they create a dip that is thicker, filling, and nutritious. Ready in 10 minutes, no cooking, no blender required. Below is a classic recipe with a hemp twist and an explanation of why this combination makes nutritional sense.

KEY INFORMATION
• Hulled hemp seeds: about 31 g of protein/100 g with a complete amino acid profile (House et al., Food Chemistry, 2010).
• Avocado and hemp seeds have a similar fat profile – both rich in PUFA and MUFA beneficial for cardiovascular health.
• 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds (30 g) provide about 9 g of protein and 14 g of PUFA fat with an omega 3:1 ratio (USDA FoodData Central, 2023).
• Add hemp seeds at the end – the crunch contrasts with the creamy avocado and is best just before serving.

What do hemp seeds add to guacamole?

Classic guacamole provides monounsaturated fats from avocado, vitamin K, folates, and potassium – a solid base. However, it lacks protein and omega-3 acids in sufficient amounts. Two tablespoons of hulled hemp seeds (20 g) per serving change the balance: they add about 6 g of protein and about 9 g of omega acids in a 3:1 ratio. Callaway (Euphytica, 2004) indicates that the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in hemp seeds is about 3:1 – similar to the value recommended by WHO as optimal for regulating inflammatory processes.

The texture of hemp seeds in guacamole is a delicate crunch against a creamy backdrop. The seeds do not dominate – they are like a crunchy accent in every spoonful. House et al. (Food Chemistry, 2010) confirm the complete amino acid profile of hemp seeds, including all 9 essential amino acids. Avocado has its own protein (about 2 g/100 g), but its amino acid profile is not complete – hemp seeds fill this gap.

From our experience, hemp seeds sprinkled on top of the finished guacamole (rather than mixed in) maintain their crunch throughout serving – even after an hour. Seeds mixed into the mixture absorb moisture from the avocado and soften after 20–30 minutes. If you serve guacamole as a dip at a party, sprinkle seeds on each portion separately, not into the whole bowl at once.

Nutritional values – what does a serving of guacamole with seeds provide?

An 80 g serving of guacamole (about 2 tablespoons) with 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds provides about 155 kcal, 5–6 g of protein, 13 g of fat, and 5 g of carbohydrates. Fiber from avocado: about 3 g. Potassium: about 350 mg (10% DRI). Folates from avocado: about 45 µg. Magnesium from hemp seeds covers about 15% of the daily requirement (USDA FoodData Central, 2023).

Ingredients – what do you need?

Proportions for about 300 g of guacamole (4–6 servings). Preparation time: 10 minutes.

  • 2 ripe Hass avocados (about 300 g of flesh)
  • 3 tablespoons of hulled hemp seeds (2 for the mixture + 1 for topping)
  • juice from 1 lime (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 small red onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • a handful of fresh cilantro (about 10 g of leaves)
  • 1/2 jalapeño or green chili without seeds (optional)
  • 1 small cherry tomato finely chopped (optional)
  • sea salt to taste

How to prepare guacamole with hemp seeds – step by step?

Guacamole is a recipe where the quality of ingredients matters more than technique. Ripe avocado, fresh lime, and good salt are the foundations. Hemp seeds are the finishing touch.

Step 1. Prepare the avocado. Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit. Scoop the flesh into a large bowl. Check for ripeness: the flesh should be light or dark yellow, without brown spots (which indicate overripeness). Small brown spots can be cut out with a knife.

Step 2. Mash the avocado. Mash the avocado with a fork to your preferred texture. Classic Mexican guacamole is thicker, with visible chunks. For a smoother effect, use a masher or a blender in short bursts for 5–10 seconds.

Step 3. Add lime juice immediately. This is the most important step for color – lime prevents enzymatic browning of the avocado. Squeeze the juice from the whole lime. Mix well. The color of the guacamole should remain light or dark green for at least 2–3 hours when tightly covered.

Step 4. Add the remaining ingredients. Finely chop the onion – a coarse onion dominates the flavor. Press the garlic through a garlic press. Chop the cilantro. Remove the seeds from the jalapeño (seeds = spiciness) and finely chop. Add everything to the avocado. Sprinkle in 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds. Gently mix with a fork.

Step 5. Season and finish. Season with salt – guacamole needs significantly more than you think. Taste several times and adjust: salt, acidity (lime), spiciness (chili). Transfer to a bowl. Sprinkle with a spoonful of hemp seeds. Optionally, add slices of tomato and a sprig of cilantro. Serve immediately.

Tips and variations

Guacamole with hemp seeds adapts well to variations:

Mango version. Add 1/2 small mango diced. The sweetness of mango contrasts with the sour lime and the spiciness of jalapeño. A classic combination in Mexican cuisine. The hemp seeds against the orange-green mixture create an interesting color contrast.

Feta version. Crumble 30 g of feta into the finished guacamole. Salty, tangy feta balances the creaminess of the avocado and creates a creamy-salty profile. Feta and hemp seeds against the backdrop of green guacamole – an impressive composition.

Cilantro-free version. Replace cilantro with parsley or basil – the same technique, different aroma. Chives instead of onion provide a milder profile. Hemp seeds fit into any herbal version.

Toasted hemp seeds as a topping add extra crunch: check the recipe for toasted hemp seeds with spices – the spicy version pairs particularly well with guacamole.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to prevent guacamole from browning?

Lime in the recipe inhibits enzymatic browning – citric acid deactivates polyphenol oxidase. Cover with plastic wrap directly touching the surface to eliminate air. Hemp seeds do not affect darkening (USDA, 2023) – add them as a topping just before serving for the best crunch.

How much protein is in guacamole with hemp seeds?

An 80 g serving with 1 tablespoon of seeds provides about 5–6 g of protein. Shelled hemp seeds contain about 31 g of protein/100 g (House et al., Food Chemistry, 2010) with a complete amino acid profile – significantly more than classic guacamole without seeds (about 2 g/100 g).

How to choose a ripe avocado?

A ripe Hass avocado has a dark green or black skin and is soft to the touch when pressed with your fingertips. Leave hard avocados at room temperature for 1–2 days. Never buy a hard avocado for guacamole – no technique can replace the flavor.

Can guacamole with hemp seeds be prepared in advance?

Guacamole without seeds – up to 2–4 hours in advance with a tight cover of plastic wrap. Hemp seeds (omega 3:1 ratio, Callaway, Euphytica, 2004) add just before serving – after a few hours in the moist mixture, they soften and lose their crunch.

What can replace cilantro in guacamole?

Parsley (milder), chives (mild) or basil (sweeter). People with the OR6A2 gene perceive cilantro as soapy – substitutes work just as well. The nuttiness of hemp seeds complements each of these herbal versions.
