Hemp seed oil provides linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids in a ratio of 3:1 to 5:1, with unsaturated acids making up to 90 percent of the fat (Kaçar et al., 2025). Such a composition is significant where the problem is a damaged epidermal barrier. There is little evidence in humans, and it must be stated plainly. Approximately one thousand people have participated in studies on hemp skin preparations, with various diagnoses and different routes of administration (Žugić et al., 2024). One of the trials described in this review involved eleven healthy individuals who used a cream with a three percent extract from hemp seeds for twelve weeks; a decrease in sebum secretion on the cheeks and a reduction in erythema index were measured. This is a signal, not proof of effectiveness.

How to use hemp wax in skincare?

Apply a thin layer to clean, slightly damp skin, in areas that dry out the fastest. The wax melts from the warmth of your fingers, so just rub it briefly with your fingertip and spread it. Excess does not penetrate deeper, but remains on the surface and stains clothing.

Typical areas include elbows, heels, cuticles around nails, chapped lips, and dry hair ends. Hemp styling wax works differently than the skincare version: it is meant to give hair texture, not to grease the skin. Before the first use, it is wise to test a small patch on the forearm and wait a day, especially with skin prone to irritation.

What not to do: do not apply to open wounds and oozing lesions, do not expect pain-relieving effects, and do not replace a prescribed medication with wax. Keep skin preparations in opaque packaging, away from light, as active ingredients degrade under its influence (Žugić et al., 2024). What is wax as a concentrate and why is it a different category?

Wax in cannabis slang is a concentrate with a soft waxy consistency, produced by extracting flower clusters with a solvent. Bell et al. (2015) describe butane hash oil, also known as shatter and wax, as a preparation containing up to 90 percent THC. This level is incomparable to anything found on the cosmetics shelf.

In Poland, it is the law that determines this, not the nomenclature. Extracts and tinctures from hemp other than fiber hemp and cannabis resin are listed in the schedules of controlled substances attached to the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction (Journal of Laws 2023 item 1939); possession of a narcotic substance contrary to the provisions of the law is a crime under Article 62, paragraph 1, and is punishable by imprisonment for up to 3 years. What to watch out for when buying hemp wax?

For the composition and promises. Spindle et al. (2022) purchased and tested 105 hemp cosmetics for skin use: only 24 percent had CBD content consistent with the label, 58 percent had more than declared, and THC was detected in 37 products, although always below the 0.3 percent threshold.

The most interesting aspect is not the mere presence of THC, but what the labels were doing. Of the 37 products with detected THC, as many as 19 did not mention it at all on the packaging, and four bore a label stating that they did not contain THC. Additionally, 28 percent of the entire sample made therapeutic claims, which cosmetics are not allowed to make.

The practical checklist is short. Check the INCI name: Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil and hydrogenated seed oil are raw materials from seeds, while names referring to the flower or leaf indicate a completely different raw material. Check if the manufacturer promises treatment. Check if they declare cannabinoid content and if they have studies to support it.
