How do these two strains really differ?
By the leading terpene, lineage, and the degree of agreement of sources. Frosted Cherry Cookies is described by myrcene, Purps by caryophyllene. The former has parents listed by the breeder, while the latter has none at all. The declared THC content is the same in both cases, so the number on the package does not distinguish these two items.
The chapter begins with the compound that sets the tone for the entire profile. The content is given as a range, not as a single number, because the manufacturer's declaration is a nominal value with an allowed deviation in both directions. Hence the most common mistake with oral administration: anyone who thinks nothing is happening after thirty minutes and takes another dose will receive both doses at once. The above ranges describe the route of administration, not this variety; pharmacokinetic studies for a single cultivar have not been published.
For the comparison of the two strains, this has one consequence. If someone feels a difference in the rate of onset, its source is more likely the method of intake and the pace of dosing rather than the composition of the plant, as both are supplied to pharmacies as dried flower, not as a ready oral form. The method of administration is also determined by the attending physician, the same one who writes the prescription.
What is known, and what is not known about the effects of both strains?
Nothing certain about the strains themselves. Neither has been the subject of research involving patients, and the material that can be referenced concerns individual terpenes from their profiles, studied on rodents and in vitro. The first three entries concern myrcene, a compound associated with Frosted Cherry Cookies, and they do not speak with one voice. Injection provided a different direction than inhalation, and the work on pain responses describes a completely different mechanism, involving alpha2-adrenergic receptors.
In humans, myrcene alone has not been shown to alleviate insomnia at doses typical for inhalation of dried flower. The direction of the effect in rodents depends on the route of administration and sex: intraperitoneal injection in 2002 described a slightly anxiogenic effect, while inhalation in 2024 showed an anxiolytic effect in females. These two results do not negate each other; they simply show that the conclusion depends on conditions that no popular strain database provides.
The last two entries concern caryophyllene, a compound leading in the Purps profile. Both point to the same cannabinoid receptor type 2, and one of them demonstrates this in the strongest available way: the effect disappears in mice lacking this receptor. The mechanistic pathway is therefore clearer here than with myrcene, though it still does not originate from humans.
Neither of the two studies tested caryophyllene on humans or in inhaled form from dried flower; both studies pertain to oral or systemic administration in mice in pain and inflammation models, not sleep or mood.
What side effects have been reported for each of these two strains?
Separately, there are no such data for either of them. Reporting from safety oversight is associated with a specific medicinal product and batch number, not with the cultivar name, so comparing Frosted Cherry Cookies with Purps in this regard is not feasible. The availability of both changes independently of each other. In the last review, some items from Frosted Cherry Cookies were marked as unavailable, while another item of the same strain was in stock; the situation with Purps looked similar, but it concerned different producers. Therefore, the strain does not completely disappear from the market, but rather leaves it in pieces, which is why the question of availability only makes sense with a date.
