Hemp shot or CBD oil - what to choose and how much does it really cost
Hemp shot or CBD oil? Real prices per mg from the current offer, what studies say about absorption, and when each format actually makes sense.
In guides about hemp, it is often stated that a shot is several times more expensive than oil and is only worth it occasionally. We checked this against the products actually available in the store u Bucha - and this thesis does not hold up. The cheapest shot costs 0.09 PLN per milligram of declared content, the cheapest oil 0.10 PLN. The ranges of both formats overlap, rather than dividing the market into cheap oil and expensive shot.
This changes the question. Since price is not decisive, something else matters: dosage precision, duration of effect, composition, and whether you will even drink something daily that you do not like the taste of. Below is a comparison based on current prices and what studies have actually shown - including what they have not shown.
KEY INFORMATION
• Price per mg: shots 0.09-0.33 PLN, oils 0.10-0.13 PLN - the ranges overlap and do not differ by several times.
• Absolute bioavailability of CBD for oral and sublingual routes nigdy nie ustalono u ludzi - the only measured value is 31% for smoking (Millar i wsp., Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2018).
• Taking it after a meal increased AUC by about five times (23.1 vs 4.5) - fat in the stomach is more significant than the packaging format.
• Oil wins in dosing precision, shot wins in that it is easier to use regularly.
Shot or oil - the shortest answer
If you're looking for a single sentence: choose the oil when you want to gradually adjust the dose and don't mind the earthy taste; choose the shot when you want a consistent portion without a dropper and prefer a pleasant drinking experience. The table below breaks this down into specific situations.
Note that in this comparison, there is not a single argument about the effectiveness of one format over the other. This is intentional. Both enter the body the same way - through the digestive tract - so the differences come down to how much substance the manufacturer claims, how it is prepared, and whether in practice you will reach for the product daily.
| Twoja sytuacja | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pierwszy raz, nie wiesz jak zareagujesz | shot w wersji Light | low entry threshold, ready portion, 40 servings in a bottle |
| You want to gradually increase the dose | oil | a drop can be divided, a 2.5 ml portion probably cannot |
| You are put off by the taste of cannabis | shot | fruit base masks the earthy note of the oil |
| You want a high concentration in a small bottle | oil | 2000 mg in 10 ml, which the shot does not achieve |
| You care about functional additives | shot | vitamin C, L-theanine, melatonin, caffeine in the composition |
| You take it at work or on the go | shot | without a dropper and without holding anything under your tongue |

How much does it really cost?
We calculated the price per milligram of declared content for products currently on sale. The result contradicts common belief: shots and oils mix in the ranking instead of creating two separate price tiers.
| Product | Form | Deklarowane mg | Price | Za mg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elixir Panoramixa Strong+ 650 | shot 100 ml | 650 mg | 59 PLN. | 0.09 zł |
| CANNOVA Natural CBD 20% | olejek 10 ml | 2000 mg | 190 zł | 0.10 PLN |
| CANNOVA Natural CBD 10% | olejek 10 ml | 1000 mg | 110 zł | 0.11 zł |
| CANNOVA Natural CBD 5% | olejek 10 ml | 500 mg | 65 zł | 0.13 zł |
| Hemp Shot OG Kush | shot 100 ml | 490 mg | 65 zł | 0.13 zł |
| Green Out Fresh Bomb Strong | shot 100 ml | 200 mg | 65 zł | 0.33 zł |
One caveat must be stated clearly: Oils declare milligrams of CBD, while shots most often declare milligrams of phytonutrients or full spectrum content. These are not identical units, so the conversion shows an order of magnitude, not equivalence. The conclusion remains valid - the claim that a shot costs several times more per milligram is not supported by Polish prices.
What do we know about absorption, and what do we not know
Here, caution is necessary, as there are many unsupported numbers circulating on the internet. A systematic review of 24 studies on humans states directly: absolute bioavailability of CBD has not been established for any route other than smoking, for which it was 31% (Millar i wsp., Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2018). The popular "13-19% sublingually" does not come from this review, although it is sometimes attributed to it.
This is not a dig at the oil format - it is a warning about numbers that circulate without sources. If a guide provides a precise absorption percentage for drops under the tongue and cites Millar's review, it repeats something that is not in that review. The reliable answer is: we do not know exactly, and the differences between products of the same form can be greater than between forms.
What can be said reliably? Oral absorption of cannabidiol is low - estimated at about 6%, mainly due to poor water solubility (Frontiers in Nutrition, 2024). This applies to both swallowed oil and shots - both take the same route.
Two things realistically improve this route. The first is emulsion: a self-nanoemulsifying preparation achieved 2.3 times higher relative bioavailability than classic oil drops, and the peak concentration of the metabolite was reached after 1.11 instead of 4.68 hours (Journal of Cannabis Research, 2025, 14 volunteers). The second is food: taking it after a meal raised AUC from 4.5 to 23.1, and Cmax from 1.2 to 3.7 ng/ml (Millar et al., 2018, cited by Stott et al.).
This second observation is more practical than the entire debate about format. Fat in the stomach affects absorption more than whether you drink a shot or swallow oil. Shots have a slight structural advantage here - they contain an emulsifier, most often lecithin, so the oil is already dispersed in water. Oil taken on an empty stomach does not have this.
Precyzja dawki - tu olejek wygrywa
This is the only dimension in which the advantage of the oil is clear and does not depend on prices or interpretations of studies. A drop can be counted, divided, and increased one by one. A 5% oil contains about 2.5 mg per drop, so you can progress from 5 to 30 mg daily in six controlled steps.
You dose the shot with a 2.5 ml measuring spoon. You can still measure half a portion, but not a quarter. When gradually adjusting the dose - which is how supplementation should be approached - the oil provides a resolution that the shot does not have. Higher concentrations are also the domain of oils: 2000 mg in 10 ml is a level unattainable for a drink.
The practical conclusion is that both formats do not compete for the same space. Oil is a tool for adjusting the dose and for high concentrations. The shot is a tool for repeatable, daily use without having to think about the number of drops.
When the shot has a real advantage
Besides the convenience mentioned in every guide, the shot has three advantages that are rarely mentioned.
- Regularity. A product that tastes good is simply consumed. A bottle of oil set aside after a week due to an earthy aftertaste has zero bioavailability, regardless of what studies say.
- Dodatki funkcjonalne. Vitamin C, L-theanine, melatonin, caffeine, or guarana are standard in shots, but do not appear in oils. They often determine whether a product is suitable for morning or evening use.
- Gotowa emulsja. Lecithin in the composition means that the oil is already dispersed in water - that is, under conditions similar to those that improve absorption in studies.
There is also a situation where the shot performs worse, and there's no point in hiding it: at very high daily doses. If you need 50 mg or more, a high-concentration oil will be both more convenient and cheaper when calculated monthly. A 200 mg shot bottle will run out in four days, while a 20% oil will last for forty.
The second weakness of shots is their durability after opening. Oil in a dark bottle can be stored in a cabinet for many months, while a shot goes into the fridge after opening and has a shelf life measured in weeks. With one portion a day, a 100 ml bottle will still be used up in forty days, so for most people, this is irrelevant - but if you reach for the product occasionally, the oil will withstand breaks better.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the hemp shot more expensive than the oil?
Not to the extent that is often repeated. In the current offer, shots cost 0.09-0.33 PLN per milligram of declared content, while oils cost 0.10-0.13 PLN. The cheapest shot is cheaper than the cheapest oil. The difference only appears with low-content variants, such as Green Out LIGHT.
What works faster - shot or oil?
It depends on the formulation, not the form. The self-nanoemulsifying preparation reached peak metabolite concentration after 1.11 hours, while classic oil drops took 4.68 hours (Journal of Cannabis Research, 2025). A shot with an emulsifier will be closer to the first value.
How much CBD is absorbed from the shot?
It is not exactly known. The absolute bioavailability of cannabidiol has not been measured in humans for any route other than smoking (Millar et al., 2018). Estimates for the oral route suggest about 6%, and emulsions and meals increase this value.
Can the shot and oil be combined?
Yes, there are no contraindications. Just keep an eye on the total daily dose and stick to the recommendations on the labels of both products. If you are taking medications regularly, consult this with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand.
Should it be taken on an empty stomach or after a meal?
After a meal. In the study cited by Millar, taking it after a meal increased AUC from 4.5 to 23.1, which is about five times. This is the largest single difference described in this review - greater than the differences between formats.
Where to start if I have never used cannabis?
Start with the weakest variant and half a serving for the first few days. A detailed guide to choosing your first product can be found in the text Hemp Shots - how to choose.
