First CBD purchases: how to choose the right product, dose, and form (oil, dried herbs, gummies) to feel the effects quickly and avoid overpaying

Shopping for CBD for the first time can be overwhelming. With oils of varying concentrations, dried herbs, gummies, capsules, hundreds of brands, and conflicting reviews online, it's easy to spend a lot of money on a product that neither works as expected nor fits your lifestyle.

This guide was created in cooperation with the brand Ubucha (https://ubucha.pl), which focuses on transparency of composition and responsible education around CBD. Thanks to this text:

  • you choose form of CBD (oil, dried herbs, jellies) tailored to your needs,
  • you will understand how to choose the dose, to really feel the difference, but not overdo it,
  • you will learn calculate the price per mg of CBD, so as not to overpay for a nice label,
  • you will get a simple one plan for the first 2–4 weeks application.

What is CBD and how does it work – a quick guide for beginners

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the main compounds found in hemp. Unlike THC:

  • it is not psychoactive – does not cause a „high”,
  • does not change perception like classic marijuana,
  • has a low addictive potential and is generally well tolerated by adults.[5][6]

CBD affects the so-called. endocannabinoid system (ECS) – a network of receptors, compounds and enzymes that helps maintain balance in the following areas, among others:[1]

  • reaction to stress,
  • sleep and circadian rhythm,
  • feeling pain and tensions,
  • functioning of the immune system.

In simple terms: CBD does not "turn on" one effect, but rather helps regulate what is out of balance. For some people, this translates into:

  • easier to fall asleep,
  • more gentle response to stressful situations,
  • less feeling of tension or discomfort.

It is not a cure-all or a replacement for therapy or pharmacotherapy, but it can be additional tool to ensure well-being – provided that the product and dose are selected wisely.

Why are you taking CBD? Set your goal before you buy your first product.

Before you add anything to your cart, answer this question honestly:

What do you want to improve first?

The most common goals for beginners:

  1. Dream
    • difficulty falling asleep,
    • waking up at night,
    • „"overstimulated" head in the evening.
  2. Stress and tension during the day
    • racing thoughts,
    • tension in the body,
    • „"shorter fuse" in relationships and work.
  3. Pain and recovery
    • chronic pain (e.g. tension, muscle pain),
    • overload after training.
  4. Concentration and stable mood
    • the desire to "smooth out" mood swings,
    • improving concentration at work.

Your main goal will help you choose:

  • time of application (evening vs day),
  • preferred form (fast vs slower, single vs split dose),
  • starting dose range.

Which form of CBD should I choose for my first purchase?

The main forms that really make sense to start with are:

  • CBD oil,
  • CBD herb (inhalation, preferably vaporization),
  • CBD gummies.

Below you will find their pros, cons and typical starting uses.

CBD oil – the most versatile option for beginners

CBD oils are the most commonly recommended form for beginners. They consist of:

  • hemp extract (CBD + other cannabinoids and terpenes),
  • carrier oil (e.g. MCT, hemp oil).

Types of oils:

  • Full spectrum – a full spectrum of cannabinoids, including trace amounts of THC, legal. It creates the so-called entourage effect (synergy of various compounds).[1]
  • Broad spectrum – broad spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes, but no detectable THC.
  • CBD isolate – practically just CBD in a carrier oil.

The power of oil – how to read it?

A standard bottle has 10 ml, which corresponds to approx. 200 drops.

Example for 10 ml:[14]

  • 5% = 500 mg CBD in the bottle → 1 drop ≈ 2.5 mg CBD,
  • 10% = 1000 mg CBD → 1 drop ≈ 5 mg CBD,
  • 15% = 1500 mg CBD → 1 drop ≈ 7.5 mg CBD.

This allows you to dose very precisely – a huge advantage when trying for the first time.

How to use the oil?

  • Instill a dose under the tongue,
  • hold 60–90 seconds,
  • only then swallow.[15]

When will I feel the effects?

  • usually after 15–45 minutes,
  • the effect lasts typically 4–6 hours.[16][19]

CBD oil – for whom?

  • you want to have precise dose control,
  • you care about good price-to-quantity ratio of CBD,
  • you accept the taste of hemp (or choose the flavored version).

This is the form that the brand Ubucha especially developed – with an emphasis on transparent presentation of the CBD content in mg and easy conversion of the dose into drops.

CBD Herb – Fastest Effect, Higher Entry Threshold

CBD hemp is dried hemp flowers with a high CBD content and traces of THC.

How is it used?

  • Vaporization – heating the herb in a vaporizer without burning it,
  • smoking – classic roll/pipe (the least health-beneficial form).

Speed of action and power of effect

  • start of action: 2–10 minutes after a few puffs,
  • operating time: usually 2–4 hours,[18]
  • bioavailability (absorption) of inhalation: approx. 11–45%, which is more than orally.[18][19]

Advantages of dried herbs for beginners:

  • the fastest effect – you quickly know whether a given amount suits you,
  • the ability to "dose on the fly" – you take subsequent puffs until you feel sufficiently relaxed.

Cons and caveats:

  • smoking is the burning of plant material – smoke, tar, burden on the lungs,[18]
  • Vaporization is healthier, but it requires a separate device and its operation,
  • less discreet (smell),
  • may be confused with marijuana (social and legal issues).

CBD herb – for whom?

  • more for people conscious inhalation and ready to buy a vaporizer,
  • as a form ad hoc for short-term tension,
  • probably not as a first line for complete novices – unless someone absolutely prefers inhalation.

CBD gummies – maximum convenience and discretion

CBD gummies are sweets with a specific amount of CBD in each piece.

Example market configurations:[20][21]

  • 30 jelly beans × 10 mg CBD = 300 mg per package,
  • 30 jelly beans × 25 mg CBD = 750 mg per package.

Speed and duration of action

  • CBD must pass through the digestive system,
  • start of action: 30–90 minutes,
  • operating time: often 6–8 hours or longer.[16][22]

Advantages of jelly beans:

  • Very comfortable i discreet (easy to take to work or travel),
  • fixed dose – e.g. 1 jelly = 10 mg,
  • pleasant taste, no hemp aroma.

Cons:

  • it is more difficult to assess the effect because it works with a delay,
  • lower bioavailability than inhalation,[18][19]
  • it's easy to "overeat" because they taste like regular jelly beans.

CBD gummies – who are they for?

  • you value maximum simplicity – e.g. 1 jelly in the evening to help you sleep,
  • you care about the form that not noticeable,
  • you don't need immediate effect.

Comparison of CBD Starter Forms

Jelly beans (oral)30–90 min [16][22]6–8 h+very highvery highoften middle-higher

For most beginners the most practical choice to start with is oil or jelly beans, and dried fruit – if at all – as a conscious addition.

How to choose the right strength and dose of CBD for beginners

There is no one-size-fits-all CBD dose. Your body type, weight, metabolism, lifestyle, and medications make all the difference.[6][19]

Therefore, the principle was adopted:

„Start low, go slow” – start low, increase slowly.[15][23]

Approximate dose ranges for adults

Based on Polish guides and reviews of supplementation practice (these are not official medical recommendations!):[14][23][24][25][27]

  • Mild stress, prevention:
    about 5–15 mg CBD/day.
  • Increased stress, tension, slight sleep problems:
    about 15–30 mg CBD/day.
  • More severe chronic pain or very high stress:
is often mentioned 30–60 mg CBD/day as a higher supplementation range.

In clinical trials, doses ranging from 20 to even 1500 mg/day were used,[26] but this concerns the treatment of specific diseases under strict medical supervision – this is not a starting point for self-supplementation.

Example: 70 kg person, stress and trouble falling asleep

Let's assume you choose 10% oil (1000 mg/10 ml, 1 drop ≈ 5 mg CBD).

Proposed, safe starting regimen (for a healthy adult not taking medication – it is always worth consulting a doctor/pharmacist):

  1. Days 1–3
    • 1 drop (approx. 5 mg CBD) 30–60 minutes before bedtime.
  2. Days 4–7
    • if tolerance is good, increase to 2 drops (10 mg) In the evening.
  3. Week 2
    • depending on the effect, you can stay at 10 mg or increase to 15–20 mg (3–4 drops) in the evening.

Follow:

  • how easily you fall asleep,
  • do you wake up at night,
  • How do you feel in the morning (sleepiness, heavy head?).

If you feel significantly sleepy during the day at a given dose, take a step back down.

Example: Person with Chronic Pain (General Framework)

Chronic pain and serious ailments It's always worth discussing with your doctor. CBD may interact with painkillers, anti-inflammatory medications, and other medications.[6][9]

For guidance purposes, the ranges shown in the guides are: 20–40+ mg/day, often divided into 2–3 portions.[23][25] It is worth emphasizing in the article:

  • start with 10–15 mg/day, see the effect in a week,
  • increase slowly (e.g. +5 mg every 3–7 days),
  • If the symptoms are still weak at a dose of 40–60 mg/day and you are taking other medications, this is a clear signal to consult a doctor instead of increasing the dose on your own.

Jelly beans – how to count them?

Let's assume the jelly beans have:

  • 10 mg CBD in one piece, 30 pieces = 300 mg CBD per package.[21]

Starting pattern for an adult:

  1. Days 1–3 – ½ jelly bean (approx. 5 mg CBD) in the evening (if it can be easily cut),
  2. Days 4–7 – a full jelly (10 mg) in the evening,
  3. From week 2 – if necessary, 15–20 mg (1–2 gummies) daily.

Remember that the jellies have a delayed effect – give them a dose at least 1–2 hours, before you say you "don't feel anything."[16][22]

How to avoid overpaying for CBD: a practical shopping guide

Two identical-looking products may differ in price even several times. The difference is often made by:

  • quantity mg CBD per package,
  • quality of raw material and extraction,
  • real transparency of the manufacturer.

Brands such as Ubucha clearly state the amount of milligrams of CBD and publish the results laboratory tests – this is a good point of reference when comparing other products.

Step 1: Always calculate the price per 1 mg of CBD

Pattern:

price per 1 mg of CBD = product price (PLN) ÷ amount of CBD in mg

Example 1 – 10% oil (1000 mg CBD/10 ml)
Price: 200 PLN → 200 ÷ 1000 = 0.20 PLN/mg.

Example 2 – 5% oil (500 mg CBD/10 ml)
Price: PLN 120 → 120 ÷ 500 = 0.24 PLN/mg (more expensive per 1 mg than 10% oil).

Example 3 – 300 mg CBD gummies (30 × 10 mg) for PLN 90
90 ÷ 300 = 0.30 PLN/mg.

Example 4 – 750 mg CBD gummies (30 × 25 mg) for PLN 170
170 ÷ 750 ≈ 0.23 PLN/mg – more profitable than weaker jellies.

Application: sometimes it's better to buy a stronger product and dose less, than to pay more for a weak preparation.

Step 2: Check the actual concentration and amount of CBD

An honest label should clearly show:

  • mg CBD in the entire package,
  • mg CBD per unit (drops, jelly, capsule),
  • product type: full/broad spectrum, isolate.

If the manufacturer:

  • only percentages are given, without mg,
  • uses generalities such as "strong, extra, turbo",
  • there is no information about the amount of CBD in the drop/gum – it warning signal.

Step 3: Request laboratory tests

They are becoming the industry standard Certificates of Analysis (CoA) from independent laboratories.[5]

It is advisable for such a document to include:

  • exact content CBD, other cannabinoids and THC,
  • results for presence heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, microbiological contaminants.

Ubucha shares the test results of its products and ensures consistency between the declared and actual cannabinoid content – this is a model that is also worth demanding from other brands.

Step 4: Watch for Marketing Red Flags„

Be careful with products that:

  • they promise to "cure depression, cancer, all kinds of pain" - this illegal and unscientific for dietary supplements,
  • declare "0 side effects" – any biologically active action may have side effects,[6][8]
  • they do not provide information about the origin of the hemp, the extraction method or the testing laboratory.

Plan for the first 2–4 weeks of CBD use

Below is an example, safe scenario for a healthy adult who starts with oil or gummies. This does not replace medical advice, but it helps to organize the first steps.

Week 1 – Get to know your body

  1. Choose the form and product
    • e.g. 5–10% oil or 10 mg jellies.
  2. Set a goal
    • e.g., "falling asleep better" or "reacting more gently to stress at work.".
  3. Start with a low dose
    • 10% oil: 1 drop (5 mg) in the evening,
    • 10 mg jellies: ½–1 jelly in the evening.
  4. Note down your observations
    • how do you sleep,
    • when you wake up,
    • well-being during the day,
    • possible side effects (drowsiness, dizziness, stomach).

Week 2 – slight increase

  1. If tolerance is good, increase the dose
    • oil: add 1 drop (e.g. from 5 mg to 10 mg),
    • Jelly beans: go from ½ to 1 jelly bean or from 1 to 1.5 jelly beans per day.
  2. Consider splitting the dose
    • in case of stress during the day: part of the dose in the morning, part in the evening,
    • in case of sleep problems: most of the dose in the evening.
  3. Continue notes – after 2 weeks the first, calm assessment of the effects should appear.

Week 3-4 – Match and Decision

  1. Assess whether your goals are being achieved
    • better sleep,
    • lower voltage level,
    • greater comfort during the day.
  2. Adjust the dose
    • if it is good, but could be better – try a slight increase (e.g. +5 mg/day for a week),
    • If side effects are bothersome, reduce the dose or return to the previous level.
  3. Consider changing your form
    • if the effect is too slow → switch from jellies to sublingual oil,
    • if you don't like the taste of the oil → jellies or capsules.
  4. After 4 weeks, make an informed decision
    • you continue with the selected dose,
    • you take a break and observe the difference,
    • you consult a doctor if you expect support for more serious ailments.

Safety and contraindications – what you need to remember

CBD and medications

CBD may affect the action of other drugs by inhibiting cytochrome P450 enzymes (including CYP3A4, CYP2C19).[6][9]

People taking:

  • medicines antiepileptic,
  • some medications antidepressants and antianxiety drugs,
  • medicines anticoagulants,
  • some medications antiarrhythmic, immunosuppressive and others metabolized by CYP450.

In such situations consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is necessary before starting CBD supplementation.

Possible side effects

At typical supplement doses, some people may experience:[6][8]

  • drowsiness, fatigue,
  • dry mouth,
  • mild gastrointestinal complaints,
  • headaches or dizziness (especially if the dose is escalated too quickly).

At high doses and with the simultaneous use of other drugs, changes in liver function tests have been noted - this is another reason to don't treat CBD as a "harmless vitamin"„ and stay sane.[6][7]

CBD and Driving and Drug Testing

  • Research suggests that CBD alone in moderate doses does not significantly impair driving, unlike THC.[10][11]
  • However, some people may experience drowsiness – It is best to take the first doses in the evening, outside driving time..
  • Standard drug tests detect THC metabolites, not CBD. However, full-spectrum products with THC within legal limits may theoretically increase the risk of a positive result with long-term use.[5]

If you are a professional driver or regularly undergo tests:

  • consider products with CBD isolate or broad spectrum without THC,
  • demand fresh laboratory test results.

Standard disclaimer

FAQ – Frequently asked questions when purchasing CBD for the first time

1. How long will it take for me to feel the effects of CBD?
Depends on the form:

  • dried herb (vaporization): usually a few minutes,[18]
  • sublingual oil: 15–45 minutes,[16][19]
  • jellies/oral: 30–90 minutes.[16][22]

2. Is CBD addictive?
WHO estimates that CBD has low abuse potential and does not exhibit addictive properties in human studies.[5] Of course, you can develop a habit of using it, but this is different from physical addiction.

3. Can you take CBD every day?
In research and practice, many people use CBD daily for extended periods of time.[5][8] However, it is worth:

  • regularly assess whether you still need it,
  • consider short breaks,
  • observe for side effects.

4. Do you need to take breaks from CBD?
There is no single mandatory pattern. Some people do, for example:. 1–2 weeks break every few months, to see how it functions without supplementation.

5. Can you combine CBD with alcohol?
Research and analysis suggest that the connection may increase drowsiness and slow down reactions, and also affect the liver.[37][38] If you want to delve deeper into the topic, check out Ubuch's article about it, can you combine CBD and alcohol. Safer:

  • do not combine higher doses of CBD with alcohol,
  • absolutely not drive a vehicle after such a connection.

6. Will CBD show up on a drug test?
These tests measure THC, not CBD. However, CBD products may contain trace amounts of full-spectrum THC. If you want to minimize risk:

  • select products from isolate or broad spectrum without THC,
  • check them out certificates of analysis.

7. What form of CBD is best to start with?
There is no single answer, but practically:

  • oil – when you want to control the dose and have a good price-to-quantity ratio of CBD,
  • jelly candy – when you value comfort, taste and discretion,
  • dried herb (vaporization) – when you want a very quick but shorter effect and you have experience with inhalation.

8. Can you „overdose” on CBD?
Toxic overdose in healthy adults is unlikely,[5][6] but high doses can cause severe drowsiness, dizziness, gastrointestinal discomfort, and interact with medications.[6][7] Therefore, it is better to stick to the rule little and slowly.

9. Is CBD suitable for children/pregnant women?
These are areas that require absolute consultation with a doctor. For standard dietary supplements targeted at adults, manufacturers usually stipulate that they are not intended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Summary: How to get started with CBD wisely and not overpay

  1. Set a goal – sleep, stress, pain, concentration. The form and time of application depend on this.
  2. Choose the form that suits you:
    • oil – universal, precise, economical,
    • jelly beans – super comfortable and discreet,
    • drought – quick effect, but higher entry threshold.
  3. Start with a low dose (5–10 mg) and increase it slowly every few days, observing your body's reaction.[14][15][23]
  4. Always calculate the price per 1 mg of CBD and check the real amount of CBD in the package – don't fall for "strong" marketing slogans.
  5. Require laboratory testing and clear labeling – this is the standard that Ubucha uses and which should be the norm throughout the industry.
  6. Take care of your safety – take into account the medications you are taking, do not combine high doses with alcohol, be careful when driving.

Consciously selected CBD doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. If you're looking Ubucha CBD products, at which it's easy to calculate the dose and understand the composition, it is worth starting by looking through Ubucha's offer – and then, using this guide, choose the form and dose perfectly suited to your needs.
