The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an incredibly complex cell signaling system that was only discovered in the late 20th century. Although humans have used cannabis for thousands of years, scientists only identified tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the plant's primary psychoactive substance, in the 1960s and 1970s.
